Hundreds of MPs descend on parliament to be sworn in

The House of Commons was bursting at the seams as the new parliament began its first sitting.
(Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
Sir Keir Starmer made his first speech from the dispatch box with an overflowing government bench behind him.
And while swearing in hundreds of new MPs could take as long as three full days, the new political order is already beginning to take shape.

PMQs is every week parliament sits, and you're right the house is often packed for it, so yes I expect we will see a full house often as we have done in the past. Budget days are busy too.

Good point. It is a lot of money - I think £90, 000 per annum, but out of it they need to pay their staff. In addition it is crucial that the post of MP is paid otherwise Parliament will become largely a gentleman's club full of a wealthy elite given to a natural inclination to defend the interests of that elite at the expense of everyone else, leading over time to MPs who have never known poverty or even limited means.

@jla3bc considering my local council are labour and have been since the last time labour was in number 10 i know EXACTLY what we are going to get. I haven't had my waste bins emptied in MONTHS due to a strike down to workplace bullying and the councils lack of trying to fix the issue. Then in typical labour fashion just before an election is due its all magically sorted only for it to start right back up right after the election. A labour mp (who wanted to be mayor) tried to close down a food bank as it was ran by an independent mp and not labour. A labour mp STOLE thousands in public money buying personal gifts while on holiday yet is still allowed to stand for labour. My council are in close to a billion debt due to their miss management of money yet blame everyone else. Yea i am sure it was the government's fault they removed speed bumps and placed new ones in (about 10ft away from the original spots) only for them to remove them and put them back in the original spot less than a month later. Or the labour mp who used public money to have a footpath built so he could walk to his mates house quicker. Or my personal experience when labour where last in power and i was a homeless teenager not long after a suicide attempt and needed help. What did my local labour council say? You're not at risk so we wont help you. Oh you have no money here is a list of b&b's you can stay at and how much they are a night. So no NOT sour grapes at all. I know what labour are really like and can tell you now things are going to get worse under labour and they will blame everyone else and the idiots will believe them. Get ready for the over spending. Get ready for companies to leave the UK. Get ready for the NHS to get worse.

This is just like the cues at the job centre for benefits but these get better benefits than the rest of us, let’s see how many of them turn up on a daily basis or will we be going back to about twenty turning up to decide the fate of this country. I feel for Rees losing his seat as I saw him as probably one of the best MPs the conservatives had and probably one of few that I didn’t hate, Starmer will realise he and the Labour Party are well in over their head they just don’t have the people to run this country. Lammy as foreign secretary says a lot about the people they have to choose from and it doesn’t look good, you would be better putting him in charge of the finances of this country as he certainly knows how to fiddle the system.

In return you would get a wealthy sycophantic elite with no interest in you or your issues as a constituent but hey, you'd be quids in.
