HUNAWIHR - ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL VILLAGES IN FRANCE

On the Alsace Wine Route, set in a setting of vines, Hunawihr is a typical Alsatian village, classified among the "Most Beautiful Villages of France".
Hunawihr owes its name to the holy washerwoman Huna who, according to legend, lived there in the 12th century with her husband, the Frankish lord Hunon.
Legend has it that in the 12th century, when the winegrowers of Hunawihr were unable to harvest, Ste Hune performed a miracle by causing the wine to flow at the fountain which still bears his name today.
Overlooking the village, the 15th century church of St Jaques le Majeur, surrounded by a fortified cemetery, has preserved an intact environment which highlights this remarkable ensemble of the Alsatian heritage landscape.
This church also served as a dungeon, where the inhabitants could take refuge in the event of an attack.
This wine-growing village is made up of gabled winegrowers' houses with small narrow courtyards, most of which date from the 16th to the 18th century.
The dwellings of winegrowers limit their ornamentation to half-timbering, window frames and the gate.
The mansions, for their part, generally built in the 19th century, have a much more demonstrative decoration.
The building materials, however, remain the same across the ages: flat tortoiseshell tiles, white plaster or colored with an oxide protecting a cob of clay and mixed horsehair, oak, beech or fir wood, skilfully arranged beams.
A historical circuit allows the discovery of the village.
Hunawihr is a French commune, located in the administrative district of Haut-Rhin and, since January 1, 2021, in the territory of the European Collectivity of Alsace, in the Grand Est region.
This town is located in the historical and cultural region of Alsace.
The village is a member of the Les Plus Beaux Villages de France association.
The cultural heritage of the village develops mainly thanks to the tourist flow provided by the bus line 106 offered by the company ROYER VOYAGES.
