@@fahrenheitlover12 many good singers who appear on this show don't know how to hold their mic. So yes it's a dumb argument. Contestants like David Lee were a prime example of good singers who don't know how to hold a mic (watch him during lip sync round).

It looks like the mics they use on this show are omni directional. So it doesn't matter if you hold it vertically or horizontal. Mics on shows are often like that so that the singer has the greatest chance of being heard. Studio mics often are unidirectional so that extraneous sounds aren't picked up. So they offer the best quality if sound. Lav mics can be omni or unidirectional.

For omnidirectional how you hold it is often more of a stylistic choice than an indication of your vocal experience. However I do think knowing what distance to hold it from yourself is something learned by well trained singers.
