Hummingbird Rescue!

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Today I found this female hummingbird on my front porch. She seemed to be in a daze from slamming into the window. I picked her up to save her from becoming a cat snack. Thankfully, Ms. Hummingbird woke up from her daze and flew away!
Very cool to see one of these beautiful birds close up. They have the most amazing little feet and tiny little eyelashes.

My sister once saw a baby humming brid on the side of a road on a really how day.. She called me and told me to help her deal with it. I ran over to where she was and put the poor thing in a shoe box. I walked very carefully home and we had to take care of it for a few days and we had a lot of success. We had to feed it small insects and we had to give it a A LOT of sugar water. After about 1 week of caring for it, it began to fly around my room. We though it was time that we should let it go into the wild. We brought it outside but it would not leave my hand. I set it on the grass but it flew up to me.. After about 1 more week of caring for it, we brought it outside and it began to fly away... I love happy endings!

Collision SC- If all mosquitoes turned into hummingbirds then in a matter of days a lot of then would have died thanks to us humans and nature. Many types of insects would probably died out or become endanger since hummingbirds eat insects. I would never want to live in a world where there's next to none insects. That's not even all that would happen.

When a bird is injured it goes into shock. Just pick it up, put it in a safe place and they will fly away after about 15 minutes. Learned that with a Cardinal last summer.

Just FYI -- don't put red dye in your hummingbird nectar. There is no reason to, and studies have shown that it might cause damage to them long-term. Just boil water, add 1 part sugar for every 4 parts water, let cool, and then feed them :)

  • @RebeccaMcCagueSipe

Actually, the sugar water doesn't have a nutritional value either. It only attracts them. They need vitamins in their water, which is sold in stores.

My cat brought me a hummingbird when i was about 8, is was a bit cut up from the cat, but i kept it a few days and fed it, and it made an adorable little peep sound everytime i left it alone for long, i eventually let it go, though it seemed more like it wanted to stay. Practically had to throw it in the air and run inside. It could fly fine and i'm sure it had a normal life. Amazing little birds. :)

I saved one the other day that flew into my garage, It got confused by my lights and could not find the door. I thought it was going to knock itself out slamming into the light fixture over and over like a beetle does. I turned off the lights hoping it would just fly back out the way it came but it just landed on the fixture and sat there. (most likely dizzy from all the head impacts) The funny part is when i got up there to catch it and take it back outside it just sat on my finger for about 10 minutes before finally deciding to fly away Directly back into the garage. This time when i released it again i had the garage door closed.

It was still alive, so my mom picked it up and took it with her. My dad was furiouse and told her to put it back where we found her. My mom put her back and I cried. My mom picked it back up and we took care of her/him. After a few days it died from sickness. :'(

I am 50 and only held a humming bird in my hand once in my life. Let me tell you about it. I was sick, recovering from a bout of very aggressive chemo therapy. I was oh so sick. Sitting in the yard and one came and landed right in my right hand. I talked with him for a good three minutes. He kinda 'squeaked' at me a little. He up and flew away. The next day, the same little guy came back! Again he sat in my hand and squeaked at me. I thanked him for his song and told God 'I get it'.

It only took about 5 - 7 minutes for the bird to come around and fly off. The position of the sun didn't change, in the video I picked the bird up from my front porch (which is in the shade) and walked to the hummingbird feeder (which is in the sun).

I remember when i was young and we lived on a farm, my older cousin babysat us for a weekend. A sparrow hit our large window she didn't want the cats to get it so she brought it inside when it was all dazed. i kept telling her to keep it outside cause when it wakes up it will freak out. She didn't listen and we spent the better part of the day trying to get this sparrow out of the house. LOL

When i was young i had an old house on my property, and there was a crow stuck inside. It was smacking up against the window, trying to escape. I went inside and reached my hand out. It got on my hand and I walked it up my long driveway. It stayed on my hand till my mother came outside. Its one of my favorite memories. It's like it stayed to thank me.

Sorry to burst your happy bubble, but I doubt the bird survived. Very few humingbirds survive a window hit unless anti-inflammatories and a painkiller are administered. Observing this bird, it is easy to see it has a problem. It tends to slant on its right side, it doesn't try to escape its worst predator (humans), it cannot stand upright, and it has difficulty keeping its eyes wide open. It also has a slight right shoulder problem. These are all signs of a serious concussion and physical injury. Yes, it flew off but its shoulder will become progressively worse and it'll have one major headache that will impede its flight abilities.

r3nk0 Snarly-Suzie ??? Let me explain to you... For 19 years now, I've been admitting wild birds in distress/difficulty at my own expense. I have a government permit as a rehabber. For nine years, I was getting over 700 wild birds a summer, from the tiniest hummingbird to owls, falcons and whatever that flies. This is not my job. I do this to help them and God is proud of me. I work from my home in another field. Babies must be fed every 20 minutes, 14 hours a day, This, for at least 15 days per baby bird. It takes 12 hours to make the special food preparation (7 ingredients that I make in batches and freeze), the best that will ensure perfect and healthy bone and feather structure. Not Tropican, don't touch the stuff. They are all raised wild and terrified of humans, as it should be. Never any visual contact with the bird. Just keeping heat by convection on featherless and seriously injured birds requires constant checks. I pay all this myself. Snarly Suzie ??? Any long-billed bird that hits a window should never be released before 24 hours. This said, I only wanted to point out observations people should make before releasing a bird. I took the time to explain it and what do I get in return? SNARLY SUZIE... Shame on you!

r3nk0 Thanks. We all learn new things in life...all of us, all of the time. Remember the feather suggestion I gave afterwards. This works. The bird in my photo here is a falcon. This guy was found drifting inert in a chemical pond of graphite molasses, a real mess. He was lucky: no chemicals in eyes, ears, nostrils or inside mouth (beak). Besides the horrible amount of black gummy filth that covered his entire body as well as my kitchen floor after I gave it its first bath, he rewarded me with this very rare photo after his third and last bath. His feathers were still waterproofed and he took off like a real pro when released back in his territory four days later. Falcons NEVER pose for you. They aim straight for your eyes with lighting speed. The two first baths over two days, he never reacted, just like in the video. But the last bath, I had called a friend to control the bird's neck because I knew he was very alert and I had to watch for his talons that were flying left and right. I have many beautiful photos of different species of birds that I've helped, special ones. People often ask me why I do this. I answer 95% of their difficulties are the result of human presence. Someone has to help them. Have a beautiful Sunday. Regards.

mike dwansome I think I'm the second group of people...the ones that choose to do nothing. But, before you drop the spotlight on me, I have some reasons why. 1) I have chronic health problems and rarely even get outside, much less go anywhere. As such, contact with injured animals hasn't happened to me...yet. 2) As I have these problems, I can't even take care of myself, much less help an injured or sick animal should I ever come in contact with one. 3) I never know where animals have been. They could carry diseases, germs, etc. I already suffer with chronic (and debilitating) problems of my own. The last thing I need is something else to bother me and my body. There may be other reasons as well, but these are three that I know of. And, that's why I do nothing. It's not because I don't care about animals. I'm an animal lover, in fact. And, if it wasn't for my problems, I probably would take in an animal or two for a pet. That said, I do nothing because of me and my problems, not because I don't care.

Aah, same thing happened to me as well! I believe it was a baby... smacked itself into our glass door- mom thought it was a goner. I had held it in my hand, gently petting it thinking it was gone as well. It seemed to be dazed, for after I had held if for a bit, it came to its senses and flew away. They're so beautiful, seeing it slow down for once was honestly captivating.

From what I understand about hummingbirds, it probably would have died of starvation before anything else. Their metabolisms are INSANELY fast due to how fast they flap their wings so they need to eat almost all day in order to survive. Really glad you picked her up when you did!
