What do YOU think of these Humbrol Acrylics?

Sorry for non topic question, my thoughts on the paints are below. I wanted to ask you if its normal for airbrush to spit when the needle is dry? If I paint with Tamiya acrylic with my Badger Renagade it always spits a little bit leaving marks on the kit. This however dont happen with lacquer based paint thinned with leveling thinner because of retarder. Do you know if there are any airbrushes that dont spit when the needle starts to dry? Am I using too much air pressure?

Good, comprehensive, no-nonsense review - refreshing! Thank you
Thanks very much for this extensive review James. I am a novice at painting but this kind of review helps people like me immensely.

Thanks for the review, James.....thorough, unbiased and professionally done. I've avoided Humbrol paints for many years as they certainly were on the back foot when it came to the current types available today. This Gen 2 bunch looks pretty good and, when they become available, will give them a try.
They look great, and a huge improvement from the current/previous Humbrol paints. I look forward to using these for the first time when theyre released. Thanks for the review 👍

@@lpjmodels hi James. New sub to you...are these available now?...havent been to a model shop for some time.
Obsessively well done James!! Really the only question is the formula for the Humbrol Thinner for these. Am suspecting even when using a hairy stick, a drop or two of brand thinner (and maybe a drop or two of self leveler too) will go a long way to making the 2nd gen very well rounded paint alternative. Any approximate timeline for the Thinner? Paint chemistry is a barrier for me right now. Trying hard to stick to Acrylics only. It's been quite a few nights driving back and forth Florida listening to SCU's podcasts covering the different types of paints and thinners, chemistry etc. Amazing how much of a difference between the manufacturers thinners there is, especially with which paints. With all that said, yes would really like to see the SMS paint test. Really enjoyed how comprehensive of a job you did. Thanks for all you do 👍.

Thanks CrazyLocha 🍻 I thought the SCU episodes on chemistry were great, people don't understand how much difference there can be with a simple acrylic, it's crazy that we are expected to know what's going to work from the start. The SCU guys did an amazing job of breaking it down for people. They do a brilliant job of getting into the nitty gritty anyway but those episodes were special. I think the thinner should be ready when the range launches , fingers crossed 🤞 Hopefully they send me enough SMS to do a thorough test, if not I'll pick up a few more. It may be a little whole I have a lot on backlog but we shall see 👀
Well done. A very balanced and fair review. I’ve got a few pots of the current acrylic range that I use for particular jobs so I shall be interested to try these when they are readily available.
Excellent, professional and very informative review James. Must admit I’m now contemplating using them on my next build (Airfix 1/72 F4 Phantom). Thanks again 👍🏻

@@lpjmodels I'm going to take it a step further and say with all the different types and styles of paint applications in our hobby, we NEED the multiple evaluations and reviews. Thinking in the tech review realm, there's not just one review we look at when new products come out. Linus does one style review, Gamers Nexus does a different type with another level of thoroughness, Hardware Unboxed yet another in depth, and on and on. Each has different emphasis, with conclusions based in different use cases. Paints, if anything in our hobby, has sooo many use case differences. This LEVEL of quality comparison has been lacking and is sorely needed. B.Rex does his plastic spoon gig, yet has product under his own label. Seeing actual modellers (Yes you Matt, Mos, Gary, and of course yourself James) do thorough and well produced reviews has been why I try to support you all. This was a serious step up and is Very Very desired. Matt, get on it, improve on it, raise the bar as James has. As us shipbuilders say... All boats rise with the tide 😁⛵.
That was a highly professional and exhaustive review thanks James. Lots of food for thought there- having had a number of difficulties with Humbrol #29 Dark Earth Brown in the tins (specifically trying to thin it- tried everything!) I was slightly concerned that problems with the new one seemed to be apparent although you put it down to your setup- well, time and experience will tell! Thanks again.

Thanks James. I like them, but it might be a while before I do a main camo with them. 1. I want to wait for their thinner, and 2. I just love laquers too much
Nice review. While I'm not about to change wholesale as I am not an acrylic user usually - I grew up on Humbrol & Tamiya Enamels, and later adopted Lacquers from Mr Color and more recently, Tamiya, and those paints I trust and have practice using. I have tried Acrylics - Mostly Mr Color Acqueous & Tamiya Acrylics and some Vallejo and had "Indifferent to bad" results, especially airbrushing - I guess I'm programmed to thin enamels and the like and I have trouble gauging when enough is enough when thinning, so I am curious as to how these new acrylics will take to Lacquer thinners like Mr Levelling Thinner or Tamiya's Lacquer Thinner with Retardant. If that works I may supplement my paint range with Gen 2's IF and When they get to New Zealand. (Price Hike alert, there. It looks like in the future, Humbrol Paints in NZ may cost as much a 2.5 times English retail here, so about $15,00 per pot/bottle, minimum. (Shipping and distributor and retailer cuts are the issue here)
High ….can you advise on the following ….I’m applying acrylic primer to by model , yet in the cockpit areas I have some small areas that I have some enamel paints that I’d like to apply ….will this be ok over the acrylic primer ??? … thank you
I use their enamels and they dry wery quick thinned with lacquer thinner. Much more durable and better than waterbased paint. However I never had problems with spraying their older acrylic lineup besides yellow.
Great review LPJ, sadly tip dry is very real here in Australia so I'm not sure how these would go over here.

Hi, great review on humbro paints, I'm curious if you had any problems squeezing the bottles, I bought some last year and had to put alot of pressure for the paint to come out. Did you have any problems ???
@lpjmodels
Жыл бұрын
Hi Mick, I didnt notice any that were particularly tricky.
I'll give these a crack next time I run out of a colour or need a new one for a previousy unpainted scheme. Love to support a British brand if I can. Have had no problem with Vallejo Model Air range so not looking to change but can't hurt to give these a whirl. Only thing I don't like is they don't give them names. I like how Vallejo actually call the paints Duknelgelb or whatever.
I got caught up in the 'pot' type Humbrol acrylic some yeas ago - they were awful. They didn't go down well, they were grainy when dry. I swore I'd never use Humblrol products ever again - not limited to paints either but due to their overall modellers' range which was/is dire. However, I was recently faced with either the new dropper-style or not having a colour anywhere near what I needed so bit the bullet and bought the colour (127). It took some thinning (I used Ultimate Products acrylic thinner) and whilst one colour is hardly a definitive guide, far less a ringing endorsement of the whole range, I have to say, I was impressed with the paint despite myself. So whilst it was going to take some convincing to get me to buy Humbrol acrylics again, that colour has helped to swing possibly buying more. I still refuse to use that appalling Decalfix though. Thankfully on a test piece, it stripped Tamiya acrylics off, not what you'd expect from a decal setting product.
@lpjmodels
Жыл бұрын
Yeah, that decalfix can suck eggs, keep you eyes peeled for the gen 2, it is a superior paint, it still comes with the pitfalls that water based acrylics face, but it's so much better than before.
Thank you for the video, quite informative. To be honest I'm not overly impressed with this paint from what I've seen in your video as I recognise the same pain points I had with Lifecolor. With having a good extractor at home I see no reason to switch from Gunze and MRP.

I found lifecolour got stuck worse in my set up, in my HMS Harvester build i bought the paint from lifecolour but ended up mixing them from mrp for ease.
Wondering how they’ll react to Blu Tack “worms” used for camo patterns. I’ve sometimes seen it leave a shiny trace on airbrushed MIG paint, even though it was clean, first-use Blu Tack, so “uncontaminated” by other substances.

While my trusty pro arte series 42 cats tongue sable may be getting old, the bristles are kept soft and workable with a treatment of the masters brush cleaner reguarly and a condition every several months. The ferrule may be gunky but the head of the brush is still supple. But I won't turn a new one down if you're offering 😀
To be fair if it’s being compared with the previous incarnation it can’t be any worse……. Valejo are the kings of acrylics. I’d be amazed if anything made or marketed by Hornby could even come close.

So, pretty average water-based acrylic paint. No reason to buy it if already using similar paint, ok to buy if no other paint is available or previously owned. That's an improvement I guess.

About that yeah, but, a load better than the old ones, and particularly nice to brush.
OK. I would have used the same paints in both brush and airbrushing as an absolute. I would have almost certainly used the same paints in every test as then we can see the reality? Why attack a model with a toothpick? I don’t know what up put your kits through but this seemed pointlessly violent? Other than those points not a bad video and we do have a reasonable idea as to the capabilities of these paints and they appear good subject to price (Humbrol cannot ask premium with their current history) then I will buy a set. For your first 2 points, time is the reason. I can't make a 2 hour video nobody would watch it, but I do like to be through hence bouncing through a few of the colours.
