Humat R & D Video

Clackamas Fire is in an R & D process with a valve that is applied to the steamer port of a common Hydrant which allows an engine to plug into the hydrant and increase it's pressure after water supply has been established without disconnecting from the system. This allows for expandability within the water supply FRP so one technique will be adequate for a common residential fire while also meeting the increased water demands of a large scale commercial fire.

I love these "R&D" videos on the HUMAT, like it's some new technology. I was a rookie in 1974, and we were using the predecessor of the HUMAT, the Meushaw valve back then. We switched to the HUMAT when it came on the market in the late 70's. So, it's been around about 45 years. Welcome aboard!!

A hydrant only gives so much GPM depending on the size of the water main. There is no way a Humat Valve increases the GPM.

But hoses have friction loss, there may be 60 psi at the hydrant, but 500 feet away it may only be 30 psi, using the second pumper to boost the pressure at the hydrant will boost the pressure at the end of the hose too.

It can't increase GPM at the hydrant but it can increase GPM flow at the other end of the LDH by boosting pressure to overcome friction loss.
