When you are able, in any given moment, to find the laughter, to find the love, your life as you have lived it through the filter of your mind, will be over. To know the self is to see the self, to see the self is to understand the self, to understand the self is to learn, to learn is to teach - this is the obligation set by each student as they walk the path to healing.

They could have "that" & much more as I knew all the things about how to get this done in the most effective way and I knowing that of what they each as a 1 person, a self, human...needed, healed, given, & much better for ALL. Rule #5: Everyone believes their own Bullshit. Constructive criticism is a tool and/or skill of the past. Human beings need to hear other perceptions of their actions and personality to change their conscience mind. #9 Active listening is a skill that must be improved daily. Dr Hanson always provides great food for thought. With a background in economics and statistics. The little work I did with statistics I always applied the caveat that you can make statistics say what you want if you control the parameters inputs. There is always more than one interpretation. We humans need to explore these questions more.

Interesting discussion. Though he has an embedded assumption that people are not driven by spiritual motivations. He would probably say they were trying to fit in and be accepted consciously or unconsciously, but I don’t believe this can be so easily dismissed.

Thanks for this discussion. This is is a subject I have been exploring this year. In my mind it one of the most curious parts of the human mind. I also think this is one reason AI technology can't ever achieve the same mentality as humans because we can't program this aspect into them because if we did, then it would lead to ignore parts of the code that deals with safety and morality. I'm excited to read Hanson's book and see what else he has to say about the subject. Speaking for myself, I love to delve into various subjects. When I see an interesting video like this one, I post a comment like this one in the hopes of a back in forth discussion or perhaps hoping someone will point out a fallacy in a logical way. I do not however, like attention from strangers, care about what the norm thinks of my comments, or care if feedback occurs. I just want to bounce ideas off other people. If my social circle cared to discuss any of these topics, then I wouldn't be watching these videos. The lie I have been telling myself is that KZread is the correct forum for this. It was in the past but no longer. It is still a great tool for learning, entertainment, and making mental connections. When I see an interesting video like this one and can't help but comment despite the data that it is not achieving the back and forth discussion I was hoping for. It is still cathartic for me though. These tiny details of behavior are hard to decipher in people when the tendency is to assume all people want the same things or have the same motivations. I loved the part where Hanson mentions the needing wider sets data because while the first initial basic patterns of behavior usually prove to be correct until we have the data to prove it we are lying to ourselves by assuming our first evaluation was correct. I think it is important to keep an open mind so we avoid lying to ourselves about other people. I think when it comes to other people we tell ourselves more lies than we tell about ourselves because the uncertainty is much higher. The more self-aware someone is, not just overall but also in the present moment, the harder it becomes to lie to oneself.

@@daotheeternalnamelessbeyon8778 Awareness is a concept not a self. The truth comes before self. The self comes before knowledge and awareness. To answer your question would require having awareness of awareness. Also understanding of the difference between self and ego. Awareness by my definition implies acknowledgment followed by understanding. To understand your question would require dividing the definition of awareness. Knowledge is our understanding of the truth. The truth entails all of what is, what is not, and the combination of them both. Just as understanding is not the same thing as believing. To understand something is to know the difference between what is and what is not. To use the term fooled would imply the self has been led by ego to believe the knowledge it has is the whole truth before knowing the actual truth. So awareness can help you to not fool yourself. So long as you understand that the sum of all your knowledge is limited by your understanding of the truth because we are human and not all-knowing. To assume otherwise would be the “ego” talking. The self knows this to be true. No matter how enlightened or intelligent someone is, our awareness is limited to and inseparable from the self because everything outside our own awareness is belief until proven true. This is why we call it self-awareness and why people begin to have mental health issues when they can not separate what is from what isn’t. Lying is not the same thing as being fooled. Being fooled is like being blind to the truth. Lying requires enough knowledge of the truth and the intent to ignore it in favor for what you want it to be. When you have a high self-awareness you are open to all possibilities and therefore lying seems fruitless and self-destructive. No one is perfect, we can not rid ourselves of emerging thoughts. We can however choose what we think is best given our current level of awareness. At least this is my opinion on the subject.

I really don't care what others think, i get judged harshly and negatively by default on my appearance alone so after their preconceived notions are formed nothing i can do will make myself 'look good'. My mind doesn't work like anyone i've ever heard of, i have no clue what people think and have zero idea what goes on in their minds. Ever since i was about 4 years old i've been asking why everyone says one thing but does the other, basically the standard hypocrisy. I've never gotten an answer, only emotional responses that led to anger towards me for asking why everything is a lie. None of it made any logical sense and it still doesn't other than humans are just liars by default. By age 4 i was coding in at least two languages, knew my way around unix servers, was doing math and science at a college level. School failed me, by the end of kindergarten i was completely over stupid and evil humans. In first grade i tested out to a 16+ college level. After that nothing happened, they sent me back to class to rot my brain for 12 years. People in general are horrible, cruel oblivious and utterly dumb, aside from a very rare few and i spend zero time in my life thinking about norms. If you don't like it that's your dysfunctional lying brain's problem, not mine. I'm not obligated to please you by pretending to be like you. I'd be more self embarrassed by faking myself to fit in with these ridiculous arbitrary 'norms'. But yeah, this is so far away from how i think and feel that it's no wonder humans feel so cold and alien to me, they're essentially 'not real' if it's how it's described. Most of them are so creepy in their conformation to norms they just seem dead inside, or hollow, either way, nothing there but the same dead dumb deterministic algorithm like animatronics.

So the rest of our being is a mechanism for keeping us alive and procreating and our "mind" is a press secretary meant to help us fit in with the group which also helps to keep us alive and procreating. But given this position how do we trust ANY scientific research or scientific assertion? If we discard persuit of the truth/knowledge as the leading motivation for science, then saying for example "medicine is helpful" or "medicine is not helpful" is equally meaningless.

Anyone interested in cryonics as Robin Hanson is, is obviously devoid of any understanding that life is not merely physical. Because he thinks that life is just physical is why he is looking to preserve himself for the future in physical terms. The point is that life is not physical and our continuing consciousness existence beyond physical death is consequently rendering cryonics superfluous!
