If you watch the show, they explain that the move is used for someone who startles you around a corner. You're supposed to hit them, hop back a step, and then shoot them. It makes sense if the enemy is too close to pull your weapon on.

Generally the concern that would make the butt stroke more appropriate is over-penetration. The individual may be trying to fight and will not respond to orders to surrender. In urban or close-combat fighting, it's possible that there's something behind the man that you wouldn't want to hit, and if you're this close, the bullet will pass through him and hit what's behind him. This move lets you force a non-compliant target into submission without riskign shooting something behind him.

To sigis72, I have a family member in the USMC who has used the M16a4. And this member of my family explained to me that "unless you swing the M16 like a bat, while holding onto only the barrel, I dont think it is possible to break the stock. More than likely the energy will transfer into the target and break the cheak and/or brow."

To GoldDronzer, Im looking at a Army Institute of Research graph right now and it shows the round frag'ing 3.9inches. Also, the round is ment to yaw once it hits its target. So it could hit someone in the shoulder... and perhaps enter that targets heart. And tell me when the last time we have used the 5.56 round on an army that uses body armor?

This is a military technique. And a pretty brutal one indeed. Even the dummy M-16 rifles do a heck lot of damage.3 kilos of rubber hitting your temple with moderate force is enough to leave you dazed. Usually a the follow up move is a Forward Butt Smash to the nose and your nose will break if the soldier puts enough strength to it. In all this more of self defence at extreme close range or non-lethal subduing of a enemy.

This is a good combo start, you can take a second step after the strike instead of moving back and hit the other side of the face with the back of the butt. Then when he's knocked unaware you can take a step back and use the end of the rifle to stab him in the neck/torso with a big step in.

Krav Maga is one of the most effective martial arts in the world. The reason is... No rules or morals are implemented. You eliminated your enemy any way possible. You don't stop attacking until your target is dead or incapacitated.

Reading over the comments it seems a lot of people miss the point of learning to do this right. Its to hit someone who is jumping you in CQC range, where you can't shoot them, so they don't kill you. Even a glancing strike to the head can knock someone back, executed correctly you can break their jaw or their neck.

@sigge951 Like I said earlier, Krav was developed for the IDF, for real life and death, war scenarios. If you have a gun, in a situation like this, its life and death. This is a demonstration of what CAN be done in a situation like this. If things move to close quarters REAL FAST, or a gun misfires, this might be the only OR the best course of action.

A good example of the use of this injurious buttstroke was seen in "Rambo: First Blood Part 2"(1985). In this scene, after Rambo gets out of the Huey and puts an M-16 on his person and arms himself, he faces a fat man and confronts him, with the man saying "Glad you made it." Rambo swiftly does the painful payback for the torture Rambo had faced in the camp by crippling the man with the 1st buttstroke with Rambo's own M16 into his groin, stunning him good, but he does not fall down, and gets up rather quickly. Rambo, already being a hard-headed Green Beret soldier with the killer instinct, knowing that this man is hard as a rock, decides to do a second buttstroke blow to finish the man off---right in his L side of his face! When that happened - fight over!
