    Hi Vicci, It’s understandable to wonder how long you may have had HPV. We know people can have genital HPV for a very long time before it is detected. Anyone who is sexually active can get HPV, even if you have had sex with only one person. You also can develop symptoms years after you have sex with someone who is infected. This makes it hard to know when you first became infected. You can learn more at www.cdc.gov/std/hpv/stdfact-hpv.htm and at www.cdc.gov/std/hpv/the-facts/genital_hpv_bro508-2017.pdf. We also know partners who have been together tend to share HPV, and it is not possible to determine which partner transmitted the original infection. Having HPV does not mean that a person or his/her partner is having sex outside the relationship. You can read more at www.cdc.gov/std/tg2015/hpv.htm. Take care.

    I have a question too, as a male in my 20s I have had warts on my hands that I removed with salicylic acid band aids. I have heard that the strains that cause the usually do not cause cancers, so is there still any point in me getting an HPV vaccination? Since it is so prevalent & I may become more sexual active, I’m wondering if it’s worth considering. Do the usual types of sexual protection (Condom) help prevent HPV? Thanks & screw cancer!

    Hi Philip, we know in general, warts are caused by infection with HPV There are more than 150 types of HPV viruses. Some types of warts are spread through sex. You can learn more about them at medlineplus.gov/ency/article/000885.htm. It may be helpful to start by talking with your doctor about the warts on your hands and whether getting an HPV vaccine is appropriate for you. The HPV vaccine is recommended for all persons from ages 9 through 26 years. For information on who should receive the HPV vaccination, see the fact sheet Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Vaccines at www.cancer.gov/about-cancer/causes-prevention/risk/infectious-agents/hpv-vaccine-fact-sheet#who-should-get-hpv-vaccination. We also know HPV is transmitted through sexual skin-to-skin contact. The infection passes easily between sexual partners. Condoms and dental dams can reduce the likelihood of HPV transmission but do not completely prevent it. You can learn more about HPV at www.cancer.gov/about-cancer/causes-prevention/risk/infectious-agents/hpv-and-cancer#cancers-caused. Take care.

    Hello, this a very understandable question. At this time, researchers have found no treatments for HPV. However, there are treatments for the symptoms of HPV, such as genital warts. You can learn more here: medlineplus.gov/ency/article/000886.htm. For information about HPV, you may wish to view this resource: www.cancer.gov/about-cancer/causes-prevention/risk/infectious-agents/hpv-and-cancer. Take care.

    I had genital warts but I got it incisioned by doc so and after surgery I got 1-2 wart again and than they are gone after sometime without any surgery and since than it's been 2 years I don't have any warts or nothing does that mean my immune system couldn't fight infection that's why i got warts or is it common to get warts with HPV infection in any kind of immune system whether it's weak or good?

    Genital warts are caused by human papillomavirus (HPV). Genital warts can go away with treatment from your healthcare provider or with prescription medicine. If left untreated, genital warts may go away, stay the same, or grow in size or number. Individuals with weakened immune systems are more likely to get and spread genital warts. You can read more here: medlineplus.gov/ency/article/000886.htm. If you have additional questions we encourage you to speak with your doctor. Take care.

    Hi Evie, this sounds like a frustrating experience. Most often, warts are harmless growths that go away on their own within 2 years. Some warts on the hands or feet may be harder to cure. You may wish to talk with a parent, or other trusted adult or doctor about your concerns. Information on treatment and managing warts can be accessed at medlineplus.gov/ency/article/000885.htm . Take care.

    Hi Abhishek, HPV is a group of more than 200 related viruses, some of which are spread through sexual contact. Oral HPV is transmitted to the mouth by oral sex, or possibly in other ways: www.cancer.gov/about-cancer/causes-prevention/risk/infectious-agents/hpv-and-cancer#transmitted. Infection with high-risk HPV does not usually cause symptoms and there is currently no approved test for oral HPV or HPV in men. We encourage you to connect with a health professional so they can determine any appropriate next steps. Take care.

Most often, warts are harmless growths that go away on their own within 2 years. Plantar warts are harder to cure than warts in other places, and over-the-counter medicines are available to remove warts. Ask your provider which medicine is right for you. Can HPV 16 and 18 be cured by the body? I have been sexually active and doing oral sex. I never had any symptoms, how do I know if i have it and it will develop into throat cancer years later?

  • @NCIgov

    @NCIgov

    Hi Arl, You are asking understandable questions. Infection with HPV is very common and, in most cases, the body clears the infection on its own. HPV16 and18 can infect the mouth and throat and cause cancers of the oropharynx (back of the throat, including the base of the tongue and tonsils). However, it usually takes years after being infected with HPV for cancer to develop and it is unclear if having HPV alone is enough to cause oropharyngeal cancers, or if other factors (such as smoking or chewing tobacco) interact with HPV to cause these cancers. You can read more about HPV and cancer at www.cancer.gov/about-cancer/causes-prevention/risk/infectious-agents/hpv-and-cancer. There are HPV tests that can be used to screen for cervical cancer in women aged 30 years and older and there is currently no approved test for HPV in men. A person’s doctor is in the best position to determine testing or discuss ways to lower risk. Additional information from the CDC on HPV is available at www.cdc.gov/std/HPV/STDFact-HPV.htm. Take care.

    Hi Will, It sounds like this may be a stressful time for you and your wife and we are happy to help. HPV is very common. Nearly all sexually active people are infected with HPV and around half of those infected are infected with a high-risk type. Most HPV infections don’t cause cancer however high-risk HPV infections that persist could lead to cancer. Currently, there is no treatment for HPV infections and no FDA-approved screening test for men. Women who have high-risk HPV should talk with their doctor about routine HPV and Pap testing. While HPV cannot be treated, the health changes caused by HPV can be. Anytime you notice health changes, it’s important to see a doctor right away. You can read more about HPV infections here: www.cancer.gov/about-cancer/causes-prevention/risk/infectious-agents/hpv-and-cancer. Take care.

    Hi Rihanna, In most cases, HPV goes away on its own and does not cause any health problems. But when HPV does not go away, it can cause health problems like genital warts and cancer. You can read more at www.cdc.gov/std/hpv/stdfact-hpv.htm. Take care.

    Hello Joshua. Genital warts are soft growths on the skin and mucous membranes of the genitals that spread through sexual contact. The virus that causes genital warts is called human papillomavirus (HPV). HPV infection is the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI). There are more than 180 types of HPV. Many cause no problems. Some cause warts on other parts of the body and not the genitals. You can learn more about genital warts at medlineplus.gov/ency/article/000886.htm. Take care.
