I saw Hugh Panaro perform the role four times. In three of the four performances, he was just incredible and the best Phantom I'd ever seen.

@mrk188 It was a Monday night before a small and rather dull audience. He was good, but at the other three shows, where the crowd was buzzing and primed, all of the performers took in that energy, magnified it, and threw it back at the audience tenfold. I assume you've been in audiences like that - you can feel the buzz in the crowd before the lights go down, and the way that the performers channel that energy is what makes live theater so much fun.

Absolutely! I was at Hadestown the first night Broadway came back (it was the first musical back) and there was an 8 minute standing ovation when the cast walked on stage. I've never seen anything like it. half the house was in tears! It may half been the most magical night of theater I've ever seen ans I've been to more opening and closing nights than I could ever remember.

Good for you - those are magical moments. I was fortunate enough to find myself at the (wonderful) West End production of "Sweeney Todd", starring Michael Ball and Imelda Staunton during the late Queen's Diamond Jubilee. After the curtain call, the cast struck up an impromptu version of "God Save the Queen," and followed up with Three Cheers for Her Majesty. It's those kinds of moments that make it special! Enjoy!

I just attended a program at Severance Center in Cleveland, Ohio, where Hugh Panaro and Christiane Noll sang. It was one of the most beautiful shows that the Pops put on. The voices of Hugh and Christiane were out of the world. Definitely 5 stars plus.

Was spoiled by Lisa Vroman and Franc D'Ambrosio here in San Francisco back in the late 1990s. Went to see Phantom on Broadway around that same time period, and was disappointed. WISH I saw Mr. Panaro when he was haunting the Majestic.

Saw Hugh as Jean Valjean at the Walnut Street Theatre in Philadelphia a few years ago, and had the absolute honor of sitting directly behind his parents. Though I realize this is a Phantom performance in this video, it's the only time I've seen Hugh live. He left the entire theatre completely silent at the end of “Bring Him Home”. It took probably thirty seconds before the music director began clapping from the pit...

I personally find him a bit campy, or maybe overdoing it as the phantom, but I can imagine myself REALLY enjoying his voice as Val Jean. He must have been breathtaking!
