can someone gently assist me in figuring out how to vote in this challenge. I do have an onX account (free one), and when I click on the link below, it takes me to the middle of the voting page and where it shows the Join Elite/More about Elite buttons and below that, the bios of the participants with their social links but I see no way to actually vote. It appears to be wanting me to buy a membership too vote. Is this the case?

A tent that comes off the back is a ton more handy than a roof top tent. It can be used for just shade or to get out of the rain while taking a break from wheeling, and fit a whole bunch more people in it as well.

Oh wow the Fab Rats Paul, and Chad's Fab family came down to help on this onX build of the old Willy's Wagon it's going to be awesome! I like Chad removing the floor pan rust then fabricating new panels for it. Looks great! Jace is working on the demo car. Papa Dar stopped by and did some supervising of the whole process that's going on with the Onx build. Paul you need to keep this Willy's after this Onx build for a recovery vehicle it's going to be well adapted for that. As for sleeping arrangements on the Willy's I personally don't like the roof top tents either we've seen too many rollovers of vehicles that total the roof.

Small world. It’s great to find you working with Chad’s family.

If you going to do a overlander you have to do a roof top tent but do a great kitchen area in the trunk a slide out barbecue is a must plus a side roof outrigger 👍

  • @wizardgmb

The roof popup would only give you enough room to sleep standing up in addition to looking ugly. Definitely go with the tent off the rear although you will probably need to customize a stock tailgate tent to mate with the Willy's. It was nice to see Chad removed all the flammable items before welding the floor & firewall, no fire extinguisher necessary! I forgot to comment last week regarding essential items for an overlander vehicle. I'll limit my list to two items: a Starlink & an expresso maker. 😁

Love the old Jeep station wagons. An early memory of mine has to be about 1967-68 when I was 4. Dad had a 57 with a Ford inline 6 in it. He and my brothers came home after a successful hunt and there were deer or elk legs sticking up everywhere in the back side windows. Couple years later a brother was on the wrong side of the highway pulling a buddy out and the Jeep was totaled in head on collision. A fold out the back tent would be a lot more useful.

Build a slide out section on the back to make it long enough to sleep in. If you add a drop down tailgate pickup style it can slide out on to it, no need for any mechanism. I did this with a GRP pickup cap to make a camper and it works great. You just make it big enough to fit the rear opening and sleep with your feet to the rear.

Tent off of the back if your camping a day or 2. Readily available and will attach directly to the vehicle, downside is setup and breakdown. RTT if you're only spending the night then moving on, easily broken-down verses a ground tent. Awesome build.

Paul, you can make a simple fold out bed in the back using a metal frame and a plywood platform. The extra length will be hinged to fold up and in so the tail gate can close. You can fasten a fitted tarp over the top back door that drapes down the sides and held tight with some bungee straps. Simple, comfortable, efficient platform/bed when you add an air mattress!

One of those 10' x 10' thingamabobs the vendors use at swap meets. Add side curtains. Set it up to overlap the rear of the Willys. Some custom tailoring for that wall - hold to body with magnets. Now big enough to walk around in standing up, two cots, whatever. When folded, can be stashed inside or on a roof rack.

Im on team roof top tent. Theres a reason most overlanders use them. Itll save you a ton of space inside the vehicle for gear. The right tent will be super easy to open/close. Most RTTs allow you to keep sleeping mats, blankets and even small travel pillows in for storage. A tent out the back will aggravate you when you need to remove everything out of your rig to sleep. But everyone prefers looks over function. So... GOOD LUCK!!

My driver seat swiveled, which gave enough length to comfortably sleep. I built a storage unit the height of the seat, which then extended over the seat when rotated to make a level and seamless sleeping platform. Worked fantastic for me for many years. Just an idea!

I’m not an overlander, but I would use a tent out the back, you will have the tailgate down which should give you enough length from the back of the seats to stretch out and sleep. There are tents that go out the back and have enough on the ground to be able to sleep on the ground if you want but I would prefer to be up off the ground and just have enough floor space on the ground to stand up and dress and maybe room to sit in a camp chair if there’s a reason to not have it outside the tent, bugs, rain etc.

That's a really good idea about having the ground-level portion of the tent out back. I used to carry a decent sized tent when I was working SCCA races away from my home track (Sears Point Raceway) in my 240Z. Being able to sit in a screened in space to keep out the bugs and still get a bit of breeze through the "room" was very relaxing. With the space and size of this Willys Wagon, it has much more room! This is really going to be nice!!

Rooftop tent with one of the fancy umbrellas that wraps the whole rig, kinda like the porch of your house. Carry hammocks and tarps too, if you have trees it's the only way to camp.

I think a slide-out bed extender would be pretty cool. Then your five foot bed could be much longer, with some cushions that would stack when the slide was in. The tent would be really simple. You could put a shelf on the side for a Coleman stove and sink. Icebox goes under the shelf.

If you can find one, a British army 9x9ft tent is designed with a square door in one end to fit round the back of a landrover, they even have a lip on the back end of an army landrover for it to lace onto. They are heavy canvas which would be in keeping with the vehicle. You usually store them folded up on the back end of the roof but roll them down and around to put them up. I think the US military uses a similar thing called a modular command post tent.

Love the rake of the Willys in that end shot. Obviously can't keep that stance and wheel, but that'd be really cool for just running around on the pavement. Robbie might have Sean making his a piece of rolling art, but you guys are definitely making something to be proud of and enjoy.

Love the way that looks, can't wait to see it with a little bit more clearance between the wheels. Out the back with the tent.

Paul said aprox 5' from the back of the seats. Plus the tailgate drop down. thats about 6.5'. if you put in a pullout raised floor storage... you could be along way toward done. You Could also add a 1/2" iron fuel rail Between the tank and engine( (Should stop most fuel starvation issues). Online fuel pump only)😊
