    I confess I am somewhat envious of the fun your having raking the hay. Farm work, albeit at times difficult, can be very rewarding.

    I do a lot of work with rotary one. If hay is dry, you can rake it onto the unraked hay. But if there is some moisture, you can take a litle bit smaller portion of unraked hay on the second pass and turn over whole swath.

    Just have to watch out for bumble bee nest in the ground when your doing hay. I have been lucky enough to not find any but my dad, uncle, & cousin haven't been. When you cut & rake an open cab is ok but just look out for them buzzing around on your second pass through. When you bale you definitely want to use a cab tractor though.

    For a few years I had a 16 foot Zweegers 4 basket haybob. It's the only large Zweegers I've seen, the little ones are much more common. The main thing learned was that hay was a lot of work and worry. It's even more work when it goes wrong (rain!) That gets pretty depressing, you have to keep turning the lowered value product so that it can finally be baled a lugged off the field. I'll be interested to see how Matt does that part. We had no special equipment, just a hay wagon and conveyor- elevator to load the mow. The hardest work imaginable on the hottest days of the year. It has to be hot or the hay won't dry!

    Very interesting, the only similar hay raking I've ever see around here is on the salt marshes harvesting salt hay. The one I saw didn't run off the PTO but had a sprocket & chain running from its wheels. The faster the tractor goes the faster the rake spun. I guess the only thing to worry about is a windy day! Best Regards, Jay

    I have raked thousands of hours with belt rake, haybob and most of it with a 3 point rotary rake like the one you have here Trick we did, was to go down the field, then go back with the rake just enough to move a bit of the whole row over, or if it was really heavy grass, just took the row and moved it almost 100% back over to where you had it when you went down the first time Hope it makes sense, otherwise I will see if I can show you in a better way, this was really nice to look at, fields looked great!

    Great video! I personally just started using a rotary rake (Kubota) and love it. It's not as fancy and doesn't have the hydraulic lift but it's also quite a bit cheaper than the Kuhn you used. The hydraulic lift is really nice but it only takes a couple of minutes (if that) to set the non-hydraulic version to rake correctly. I simply use the 3pt to raise it up a bit if I have to make too sharp of a turn or back up. These rakes are pretty awesome.

Its a good rake in light fields like the one we finished couple days ago took 6 laps to make a big enough row. But in normal conditions unless the baler is running with you all happens is you close yourself up in the windrows. Even though those rakes are doing a good job,.....I feel that you are wasting fuel by running the PTO. I would go with a "Wheeled Rake", the ones that have large wheels with tines (4 or 5 feet in diameter), that are driven by contact with the plant growth and slight ground pressure. They come in all different sizes. They are fast, quiet, and gentle on the hay.

  • @farmboy5622

    @farmboy5622

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@christianf5226 "Wheeled Rakes" are not driven by PTO. The large wheels rotate through slight contact with the stubby plants and ground as you drive through the field. (I am not talking about the old 3-bar or 4-bar rakes that had 2 large drive wheels) Due to frictional forces, both types of rakes need something to pull them through the fields, and will use about the same power/fuel, but using the PTO is an extra fuel cost, not to mention extra wear and tear on the tractor and equipment. I grew up with Dairy cows and Black Angus. We were more concerned about having a rake that was gentle on the hay, and not knock the leaves off. The Wheeled Rake is very gentle on the hay. And as an added bonus,.....they are very quiet and have fewer moving parts. We just had open-station tractors when I grew up, and not having to listen to something noisy behind you was a bonus.

  • @farmboy5622

    @farmboy5622

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@brianocallaghan7716 I agree that they can, if you do not have them set correctly. You basically want the stubby part of the plant that is left, to come in contact with the tines. You will get a little scratching of the surface. There are a lot of things to consider when baling or chopping hay. Nutritional values, cost of equipment, fuel costs, weather conditions, timing of the cuttings, various soil types, all play into the final equation. Every farmer has to do what he or she thinks is best for them.

  • @johndeere2038r

    Hey Tim , First of all that hay rake looks like it does a nice job ! Now something a little off topic if that's ok . Been on my mind lately about loading my rear tires on my 2020 bobcat ct1025 with loader . I have the rear ballast on it but thought loaded tires would sure help as well . Now I will be mowing about 90% of the time so I chose turf tires after trying out the r4's first, just my own preference for mostly lawn driving . Anyways did you notice a lot of difference in the ride after loading your tires ? I do enjoy the softer ride of the turfs compared to the r4's I had on it at first . But I don't want to loose to much of that comfort if the loaded tires are going to be to rough . Just wanted your opinion please if you don't mind ? I have around 400 lbs. Rear ballast. Plus the easy change Pat's system which puts that 400 lbs. Out 4 more inches . Would greatly appreciate your wisdom Tim !

I have been using the same pull-behind sweeper for about 20 years (this is not an exaggeration) with good results. If the grass is particularly thick, it takes several passes (incrementally lowering the sweeper) but I still get good results.

    There is no reason to be putting hay on top of other hay that doesn't get moved. The reason that you are putting hay on top of hay that does not get moved is because you are traveling around the field in the same direction that you cut the field. You should travel in the other direction around the field so that the baffle canvas is over open ground rather than over top of cut hay. By doing this you would not have any hay that is not getting moved. Now, granted, you will not be doubling up the windrow but you don't need to double up the windrow until you are actually ready to bale and doubling up the windrow depends on your equipment capability. You have multiple scales of equipment running together here so you have a mismatch of methodology to the field work.

    I think the KUHN 4220 made better rows, personally. I’d love to see a comparison video of a John Deere and Mahindra cutting, raking, and bailing hay. Mahindra’s made heavier, the rears are heavier, while JD is lighter, with an aluminum rear end. Plus, with Mahindra, you can turn the wheel with a load in the bucket, to where Kabota nor JD can’t turn the steering wheel with a load in the bucket.
