That is the largest nugget I've seen come out of North America for a long time. I have dug and panned for gold for over 40 years and the biggest nugget I've ever found weighed just a little over 7 ounces with most everything else being under a ounce and lots of dust. That's a once in a lifetime find my friend, enjoy it and don't sell it by the weight, there are lots of collectors out there that will pay double and maybe triple the worth in weight to add it to their collection

Hey what state or area did you find that nugget?.. I panned here and there on east coast gold veins.. I live in Baltimore and there is gold here County & city just got to know what sediment streams to go.. GOLDBORO , VA or near there me & my father would pan.. but best areas where in MD near Washington dc.. Montgomery County..near Great Falls.. my father found a Placier nug.. on tip of his shovel.. have size of a dime. Potomac falls has such great Bedrock wedges loaded with quartz black sand.. but tKes alot of work & time.. and lil luck. The government cleaned almost all gold out ending around the late 1920s if I remember.

I live in West Virginia on the Maryland border I'm 1 minute from Maryland and I'm only 30 minutes from Virginia and only 15 minutes from Pennsylvania. I would love to start looking for gold but I know nothing about it. Idk where to start but I would have to say I live by some good spots. Does anyone have any ideas where I should go near me. I think Harper's Ferry West Virginia would be a good place to go. It's only 30 minutes from me.

What’s the smell like?

What's funny is that by today's standards, it's a huge nugget! However, in 1799, when the first documented discovery of gold in North America happened, it was a 17 pound nugget that started it. A few years later, on the same property, even larger nuggets were found.

Think about how many millions of years have passed, billions of animals that have crept over, seasons that have rained and struck over this small piece of metal that traveled through such high temperatures... just to give this guy a beautiful smile on his face.

Nowadays and as far as placer gold goes I’m pretty sure that monster qualifies as a metric shit ton

Just under 15 ounces... means app 460 g The brit. and americ. pound = 453 g The brit . and americ. pharmacy pound =373 g The metric pound 500 g = 1/2 Kilogramm You guys are pretty good in fraction calculation ......I guess I prefer with Gold Ounces too ,- and in reloading Grains ...... but all the other stuff .... archaic By tge way ... nice nugget !

Gold is weighed in Troy ounces. So 15 Troy ounces = 1 Troy pound and 3 Troy ounces

Fifteen ounces of GOLD is much heavier than the same 15 ounces of hamburger. This is because gold is weighed in troy ounce which are 31.103 grams (close to) whereas hamburger is only 28.3564 grams per ounce!

Regardless an ounce is an ounce weather you weigh they in standard ounces or troy ounces they would be the same weight. So 15 ounces of hamburger would weigh exactly the same as 15 ounces of gold you are comparing 2 different weight measurements that apples and oranges

Single nuggets 1 oz and up are incredibly rare and the price goes up accordingly. Mineral collectors pay way more than gold weight for such specimens

Feels so heavy because Gold is a very dense metal. Similar to how Tungsten is very dense. Density usually equals a greater weight to the metal.

Fun Fact: A ton (2000 pounds) of gold would be 12"x12"x14". Very dense. For comparison, a 12" cube of iron is only 491 pounds.

Here’s a fun fact about the history of precious metals: Aluminum was considered MORE valuable than gold over 100 years ago, even though it is a very common element in earth’s crust, because nobody had any idea for most of history on how to efficiently extract it en mass from various soils & stones until new smelting techniques were developed in the 1920s. Fortunately, it is now literally as cheap as the dirt it’s extracted from.
