Yep, that's thriftbooks. I once ordered a Folio Society edition of Ambrose Bierce' The Devil's Dictionary, and recieved a random, mass market, paperback edition. Also, their stickers on the spines have ruined countless vintage paperbacks.

I found your channel a week ago and it couldn't have been more perfect. I've been wanting to dip my toes in ancient literature after a couple of years of reading 19 and 20-century classics, so I've been binge-watching your video and I got so many excellent recommendations and info. It's so refreshing to see someone making such valuable content on classic literature on Booktube, thank you so much! Also, you have such a lovely personality!

I am into Eudora Welty. Pulitzer prize writer who captures the South beautifully. Highly recommend. Ironically she lived through the 1918 flu, Depression and the Civil rights movement. She has interesting perspectives.

I just recently began my Dickens journey. So far I have read Great Expectations, David Copperfield, A Christmas Carol and Oliver Twist. Like you, I wasn't expecting to like Oliver Twist, but ended up loving it.

My first experience with Aristophanes was The Lysistrata. I was very shocked at how graphic it was. Great play, but it's very indecent.

I feel like we must all be at liberty to buy as many books as we wish in these sad times. (My excuses are strong at the moment.) Also, as soon as you said Victober I literally yelled YEEAAAA like I was at a football game or something so yep 😂 Also I have a giant Penguin collection of The Romantic Poets and would highly recommend!

Great book haul ! I can relate to you about ordering an edition and receiving another. It has happened to me in the past especially ordering the in print Penguin Black Spine and receiving the out of print Penguin editions...but these out of print editions are cute.

I love the Norton Critical Editions as well. I just got The Odyssey translated by Emily Wilson in the Norton Edition for a good deal.

Oh my gosh, so fun! A few months ago Steve mentioned the original text of Frankenstein and when I checked my copy, I had the Revised Edition. I adore this book, so off I went to my local, independent bookstore and thankfully, they had the 1818 Edition! I have been _saving_ it for Victober and I can't wait to get to it! I read Treasure Island for the first time a couple years ago and I loved it! I hope you do, too. I have put The Twelve Caesars on my _list!_

All great books. Am going to have to check out Byron. My Betrothed is on my list. Love E.M. Forester. Both the books and films of Howard's End and Room With A View. Only seen movie of Passage to India. Great! Incase you haven't seen the movie Dangerous Liaisons it is super!

Room With a View has been on my list for years! I really hope I enjoy him since it seems like there's a lot to look forward to.

Dr. Johnson was the writer of the first English dictionary and Boswel’s biography is a great example of what a good biography should be. I have not read yet but it’s in my TBR and I know that Audible has the audiobook.

I want to tackle the Ancient classics, but I first need to tackle Shakespeare. I still live at home, so I have my mom making sure I don't spend money like crazy on books. I have a lot I haven't read yet. I do have an account on Thrift books and just added Paradise Lost to my wishlist. After taking a British Literature a couple years ago I have been wanting to see if I could tackle epic poetry. The first things we read in that class were Beowulf and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and I did like both. I'm apprehensive though, and none of my family or close friends would tackle that kind of stuff.

SO excited for a classics book haul from you! I’ve had my Victober TBR since last month but I keep adding more. I read Dangerous Liaisons and loved it. I also watched both movies and they each had something to recommend. Just finished a free online course from Future Learn called Beyond the Ballot about suffragettes in the UK and am obsessed! The Pankhurst family who were leaders came from Manchester which ties in with Gaskell’s books, Hard Times and The Odd Women which I loved. Sigh... Deb

i have a book of emily's poetry and i liked it, but poetry isnt really my thing so i dont have many thoughts on them. definitely want to get some by the other siblings. ive been wanting to pick up a juvenilia collection but after reading stancliffe's hotel its definitely not a priority, id more just be buying it to collect rather than to read. yess its so annoying when you buy used books online and they send you a different edition than was in the picture! ive ordered so many of the newest penguin classics editions and then theyve arrived and been the 80's editions. thats so interesting about frankenstein, i never knew there were different versions. the odd women sounds really interesting too, i havent heard of it before.

Wow!! That info on Shelley was fascinating!! Have you seen the show on Netflix... Frankenstein Chronicles? - I think that's the name... I love this haul!!!!

This is a great haul! So many I want to read. I have read Lysistrata. I thought it was very interesting. I have also read History of the Peloponnesian War and I really love that book. His battle scenes are incredible. Thucydides made me really interested in the ancient world and in Sicily. I've heard The Betrothed is really good, but I don't know much about it beyond that.

I have a bit of a difficult relationship with Charles Dickens, but I actually liked Hard Times way more than I thought I would. It's definitely worth a try. And what a great haul! Sometimes you just have to indulge yourself, haha.

I learn so much with you. I love to see your enthusiasm and opinions about certain books, like ancient literature or even about certain authors, like Percy Shelley and Lord Byron. I looked up the Dumas first thing and found out it’s the last of 6 in the series. The others are: Joseph Balsamo Memoirs of a Physician The Queen's Necklace Taking the Bastile The Countess de Charny The Chevalier de Maison Rouge (or The Knight of the Maison-Rouge)

I have watched Black Sails and I loved it. I wonder if I would have seen more Easter eggs in it if I'd been more familiar with Treasure Island.

i've read some Lysistrata retellings but i've never read the play itself so i have to!! i had to read some thucydides for a class and it ended up being a lot more readable and engaging than i had expected!

Zofloya's great. It's hellraising trash, so it's my preferred flavour of gothic. I've read both versions of Frankenstein but to be honest it was so long between reading them I don't remember what the differences are. Great book either way. I think the 1818 version is increasingly considered the one to go for, though. The Johnson biography is one of the major works in its genre, but the sheer massiveness of the thing (I think my edition runs about 1200 pages in two volumes) is undeniably daunting. It starts kind of dry but once Boswell himself enters the scene it really takes off and becomes quite something. The Pater book was apparently an extremely important work in its time but I kind of hated his novel Marius the Epicurean so I find myself not exactly rushing to read it. Byron's great. I have a Penguin "selected poems" which is about 800-odd pages so probably similar to your Oxford one. That edition of Milton looks great. Paradise Lost is kind of difficult stuff (it took me years to finish) so having a lot of notes is useful. A peak of English literature. I've got the Musa translation of Dante out from the library, previously I've only read Inferno which I liked a lot but have never gone any further. Which I now intend to do so, though I fear I'll mainly just discover why you never hear about the other two parts of the Divine Comedy as much as you do the Inferno...

That really makes me want to pick up Zofloya TODAY! I've heard mixed things about Marius--I might steer clear of Pater's fiction, depending on how I feel with his nonfiction. Inferno is definitely the most popular and I think that's understandable but Purgaturio is also great. Paradiso is the really strange one, imo.

This was such an interesting haul! I really want to read the Life of Samuel Johnson now, I've been curious about it ever since I read Pale Fire by Nabokov, which has a quote from it at the beginning. And I didn't even notice that the Divine Comedy is turning 700 this year; I'm currently reading and loving it immensely.

I deliberately was hunting for the 1818 edition of Frankenstein when I wanted to read it and I'd just avoided the 1831 because other people had said to me that it's not worth reading if you've read the 1818. I'd be very interested in seeing a comparison video since you did love the 1831!

When I picked it up, I think I had no idea there were two different versions and it seems like the one I read didn't specify. But I can definitely imagine they'd be very different.

Glad you got so many books. Yes to multiple copies of Dante. If you love his work why wouldn’t you? Zofloya is one of those books I really want to get to read. I haven’t read The Betrothed but I’ve seen reviews of it and they haven’t been positive. Have you read Orlando Furioso? I’m considering buying a copy of it. Watching you talk about Shelley and Byron has me wanting to read their poems.

Orlando Furioso is on my list! I'm not sure why I've yet to pick it up because it seems right up my alley. You'll have to let me know what you think if you get it!

Dangerous Liaisons is a very enjoyable epistolary novel - at least I remember it as such because it is more than 20 years since I read it. I'm so glad you enjoyed The Chevalier of Maison-Rouge, although it's probably my least favorite in the French Revolution series. All the five other novels in this series are great. They start at the time of Marie-Antoinette's wedding to Louis XVI. I'm looking forward to reading A passage to India too. EM Forster is a great novelist, I highly recommend Howards End which is one of my favorite classics. If you like stories sent in India I also recommend the TV show Indian Summers.

I was not aware Dumas wrote about Marie Antoinette. I added it to my goodreads and was suprised to see it listed as #5?! A couple of years ago, I started Frankenstein, but set it down. The information for the edition is fascinating. I'll wait for your review before I decide to pick it up again or decide to dnf.

Love Frankenstein, and I have major works of Byron and Hard Times by Dickens. Want to read David Copperfield, and I also want to read Elizabeth Gaskell at some point...I live in Manchester and there is always a sign for 'Elizabeth Gaskell's House' and I always feel a bit guilty seeing it because I don't get why that should be so significant to me, not having read her...have you read any of her books?
