Summary:
Between 1982 and 1988, few bands worked harder than Huey Lewis Lewis and The News. Although the group was made up of seasoned vets, it wasn't until the breakout success of "Do You Believe In Love," a song from their second album, that they began receiving attention outside their home base of San Francisco. Over the coarse of the next six years, the group would perfect their blend of good time rock & roll music, infused with the soul and doo-wop influences of their youth. They would score big with three consecutive platinum albums and an impressive list of hit singles, including three number ones on the Billboard charts. Relentless touring and high rotation exposure on MTV would eventually pay off and the group would become a national headlining act capable of filling the biggest arenas in America.
In 1989 the group finally took some well-deserved time off from their touring and recording schedules with one notable exception. In May of 1989, Bill Graham presented a series of benefit concerts in multiple venues to raise awareness about AIDS and fund research and care for those afflicted in the Bay Area. Huey Lewis and The News took part in this "In Concert Against AIDS" series with a memorable one-off club performance at Slim's in San Francisco, which would not only be their first gig in over four months, but their first club gig in years.
Presented in its entirety, here is that performance. Surrounded by family, friends and a hometown audience, this intimate club gig has it all, including the group's biggest hits and a choice selection of covers. At one point, American Pro Bowl wide receiver for the San Francisco 49ers, Dwight Clark, joins the group onstage, lending his voice to the doo-wop classic "Working In A Cold Mine." Mark Russo, renowned for his saxophone work with Tower Of Power and The Yellowjackets, also joins in on the final half hour of this remarkable performance.

Incredible. This is what hard working, professional musicians who’ve played together as a band for years sound like. The News are so tight and locked into a collective pocket here it’s a gift to see and hear it. The rhythm section, keys, guitars, and Huey’s harmonica are firing on all cylinders. Holy crap, that transition!! Literally gave me goosebumps. Bill’s snare shuffle is spot on, Mario’s bass line when they switch into Thin Lizzie is badass, and let us not forget that epic solo from Sean Hopper

Huey is slightly underrated, I agree. What is truly underrated is THINKING. Mainstream media lately with Don Lemon and Whoopie Goldberg are poster children for just how underrated critical thinking is. Small brains are all the rage

Huey Lewis is clearly one of the best frontmen in rock history...bar none.

As a Dubliner I'm proud of Huey Lewis and the News' rendition of the Boys are Back in Town. Phil Lynnott would be proud looking down from heaven!
These guys were always so damn tight live. From everything I’ve ever read they were the hardest working band in the business.

Sean Hopper is so underrated as a keyboardist. His piano work transitioning between two completely songs is pure genius. I love watching him play!

Jon Olson he really tears it up during that interlude. Huey’s whole band was really rock solid.
I love this band, nailed this, If only Phil was still around to hear it...
Love the entire show, but especially this part. Thanks for the upload. Wish I had seen HLN while I had the chance. At least we have this, though.

Transition starts at 3:05 and goes to 5:05. They just make it seem so effortless. I loved the News growing up, even as a little kid in the late '80s. I later was a News major in college...and listened to Huey's hits while writing for the paper in college and in my first job out of college!
Saw them twice in London, superb band .
My favorite rock band of all time, and this my favorite song of theirs!!!! Love me some Huey!!! Oh yeah!!! Blow that harp!

Saw them open for Billy Joel in the early 80’s. Never heard of them before that but became an instant fan. One of the best concerts I have ever seen.
Honestly .... they are the last of their kind ! I love love love Rock n Roll and in my lifetime, Huey Lewis and the News brought it ( old school ) better than anyone ! The only “ modern “ ( in the 80s ) band that I listened to that my dad enjoyed as much as I did .

Huey played quiet a few times with thin lizzy, and Phil lynott on his solo stuff, so no real surprise he plays the boys are back in town, him and his band still sound good, keep rocking Huey

Huey Lewis played harmonica for Thin Lizzy a few times and was a friend of Phil's before the News. There is an actual recorded television performance on BBC's Old Grey Whistle Test with Huey playing the harmonica with Phil.

I saw them.few times ALWAYS Super tight and no one in the room was dissapointed couldve gon on all night

Huey Lewis plays harmonica on a Thin Lizzy live album back in the 1970s, so he knew Phil Lynott personally. A great version for sure, and also one with a bit of a personal connection.
