Hudson bay chop in a Gheenoe Classic
I was fishing 5 miles or so from the house when a pretty stiff 10-15 knot wind kicked up from the south, forcing me to cross some choppy water. The GoPro camera has a way of dumbing everything down but it was a fairly sustained 2 foot chop with a few larger ones thrown in. At least it was a head sea.

Thanks for posting this. I've been trying to fond info on how Gheenoes handle rougher water. Very common in the waters I'd bw going to get chop like that in the mid-late afternoon.
What a ride. What would happen if you slowed down by 1/3 or more? Curious.
Went through a chop about that size, maybe half a foot larger on a windy day in my friends Gheenoe off the gulf near the keys. Coming in we had a following sea and we almost got swamped about a mile offshore when the waves just ended up being timed badly, the whole front of the boat went under. Truly a scary experience lol. The Gheenoe is a great boat but very scary in rough water, if it weren't for the bilge we probably would've sunk after stuffing the nose.

The trick is to keep the nose up try to skip across the top of the chop

@@ryanjacobsen9557 yeah the waves were too far apart to do that though. We shouldnt have been out there in that boat lol

@@ryanjacobsen9557 keeping the gheenoe nose up in a 2 ft following sea especially with 2 people in the boat is very challenging.
Yeah, the GoPro must be dumbing it down. It does not look like a 2 foot chop. It looks more like 1 foot chop. Still, these are rough conditions for a Gheenoe, and the boat looks like it handled it well.
Been looking at a classic and lt25 for backwaters in northeast fl/southeast ga. How does the classic hold up? Does it have a lot of stress cracks or anything
What kind of speed do you get out of your rig?
What size boat and motor?
Impressive for a boat like that looks better than a Jon boat
Is this arctic ocean Hudson bay? I've been looking at getting a Gheenoe, maybe to use on Lake Ontario or Georgian Bay, around the coasts, maybe zipping out from Tobermory to those large islands south of Manitoulan Island in Georgian Bay. Ever go out into the deep water? I'm wondering if this could make it from Tobermory to Fitzwilliam Island in Georgian Bay, it's about 25km. I've been looking at a 16ft rigid bottom zodiac as well.

No Hudson Florida. gulf of mexico. I've been 7 miles offshore in it but in perfect conditions. it is not at all an offshore boat and you might notice I'm completely soaked running in these conditions. a very wet boat!
I did this in a 13' lowsider and cracked the hull.

I needed a laugh today to funny. ty
If this were a Highsider, you would be soaked at the least, and maybe swamped if you didn't have a bilge pump.

+J Mac I was soaked, and do run a bilge pump. It's a necessity for a gheenoe in bigger water!
That’s pretty amazing performance. Any teeth left? ☺️
No life jacket! Accident waiting to happen.

Head seas are not too bad, but quartering or beam seas or following seas can be a hassle. It hasn't ever felt dangerous, though. You have to use some discretion. You can use the shallow draft to your advantage and run creeks or shallow water to get out of the chop sometimes.

It doesn't matter! I've tried everything and you pretty much always get soaked in any chop on a gheenoe
