Hubble Telescope Image Processing!!

Ғылым және технология

Hubble Telescope raw image data is publicly available to anyone who searches for and downloads it! Processing from scratch is so much fun, and can provide different results than the "official" processing - the power of a space telescope at your fingertips!

    Great video! I found the list of filters used by Hubble and thought that you and others might like this as a reference. www.spacetelescope.org/static/projects/img/wfpc2_filtre.jpg

    Loved this video, NGC 5189 is such a cool looking object! I read an interesting book this summer about Hubble and specifically the images, and their relation to landscape paintings. Along the way the author delves in to the formation and motivations of the "Hubble Heritage team" that makes the "official" processed photos. The book is called "Picturing the Cosmos: Hubble Space Telescope Images and the Astronomical Sublime" by Elizabeth A. Kessler

    I think some people get APODs out of this process. I see them a lot as hubble data and processed by so and so. Those scratches are cosmic rays on the image. I forget where I saw it, but there was an interview with the person that cleans up the images from hubble and he was saying they are cosmic rays. I think it was "How the Universe Works" or something. If you also have Amazon Prime, I think the video was on their video service.

    So far I'm an "Astro Pixel Processor"-user for the stacking.. I do think i'm missing a few features that sometimes makes me consider trying out pixinsight.. but.. then I see all the menu's and buttons and things and setting.. and words and settings that you're using.. I'm I'm just... like... uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuh.. yea.. not sure..

    @@CuivTheLazyGeek It's very user friendly.. you just load it all up. Run through the steps, and it comes out with the stacked images. And has good tools for light pollution removal and such. Even the RGB combination of Ha/Oiii/Sii is very easy. The things I'm missing are the star removal. and the "hasta la vista green". Even if you do have HSL sliders and you can get rid of the green that way. it's not an instant, boom and done method for sure.. So I end up doing those things in photoshop anyway.

    Cuiv, someone has recommended MAST over the hubble legacy archives. The interface is very confusing though and certainly NOT user friendly. The data file also consists of 3 separate files, but I am unsure on how to proceed as the WFC actually consists of 2 cameras that are joined in the data collection process and the join between the 2 cameras stands out like dog balls...images of course, look horrible with this join in them. Curious to see if it's possible to remove said join somehow.

    Does anyone know where I can learn the process of how images are captured, stored, released to the public from Hubble? Is there some official documentation about this process somewhere? I'm just an occasional amateur astronomer dabbling with images using computer vision for my own amusement and want to learn more about how to get data that comes from telescopes as soon as possible after it's captured, as well as info about planned image capture with the telescopes.

    Need more help. Had to download 7-zip for my Windows 10 desktop. Unzipped files. The are three files, but two are very small. The large file says its a fits file, but when I try to open in Pixinsight I get an error message. When Pixinsight tries to open it a.gz is added to the file name ??? Ideas ? You welcome. But it’s not cheap, like the telescope.live service it’s around a dollar or two each minute(depends on what telescope and how bright the moon is) But it’s almost like with your own telescope, but you can’t just walk over to it.

    this is so magical! I don't have Pixinsight, I'll try to replicate this in Photoshop. Can you please explain what these operators mean in Pixelmath: ~ and ^

  • @CuivTheLazyGeek

    @CuivTheLazyGeek

    3 жыл бұрын

    ~ is the image invert, and ^ is power (10^2 = 100) . All the details here: thecoldestnights.com/2020/06/pixinsight-dynamic-narrowband-combinations-with-pixelmath/ . Not sure whether it can be done in PS, but it would be great if that's possible!

  • 3 жыл бұрын

    @@CuivTheLazyGeek thanks a lot, I thought as much but couldn't confirm it anywhere. Power in PS might not be possible I'll have to see if I can comeup with some way, but this will be a crazy idea!
