    Keep in mind new bikes are also set up with geometry for 1x. Just because you can doesn't mean it will be right. Off chain lines can cause chain drops, excessive and premature wear on components. BB and crank width plays an important role. Chain guides and early narrow/wide sprockets were only temporary bandaids to technology, not solutions.

    The idea with HG cassette core was to move the bearings from the middle of the HUB to be more closely as possible to the dropouts. It was very common in the time of "free wheels" cogset to have the axle bent. Unigllide and then HyperGlide manage to fix that problem. XD and MicroSpline moves the drive side bearing far from the dropouts. From an engineering point of view this is a step back. HyperGlide is a superior design. XD and MicroSpline works because now we have better materials than we had 30 years ago and the axle is an oversized pass though. But the only real benefit of XD and MicroSpline is the 10T cog: nothing more, nothing less. No wonder the only solution for 135mm QR is the FH-MT500, and maybe this is going to be the less reliable MicroSpline HUB in the lineup (but id does have a oversized axle, tough).

  • @AlvaroKuolas

    @AlvaroKuolas

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@LoveMTB you are right on XD, but on Shimano MicroSpline Freehubs the bearing its in the same position as the cassette core pawls, far away from the dropout. Thank you for your videos. On one of your videos I saw that the MicroSpline Aluminium core gets bites from the cassette: that's another drawback for the new system.

    The reason Shimano is using the older style free hub on the Deore 12 speed system is so that those that have older bikes can upgrade to 12 speed without tossing out a working hub. Makes perfect sense to me. You have an older bike you choose Deore. Anything newer you go with XT or XTR.

    Great video! quick questions, as an example can the shimano deore hubs with the standard shimano freehub be converted to the new micro spline? Also if you wanted to convert say a shimano deore hubs from 9mm qr to 15mm thru axle, is it as simple as just removing the end piece adapter? I'm just getting into Mountain biking (first legit bike for me) and curious to learn more. Thanks.

    Depending on your hub manufacturer. E.g. mavic and novatec allow you to change your freehub body instead of whole hub set. You can checkup for other makes on their websites.

    THANK YOU excellent and clear explanation!! I have a SRAM 746 rear hub with a 10-42 cassette that is too hi geared for me. I need the Shimano 11-46 cassette. I was wondering if I took the SRAM cassette off with the XD body IF I "could" install the Shimano body onto that hub and install the Shimano 11 speed 11-46 cassette. Looks like I CAN!! Thank YOU!!

    @@LoveMTB THANK YOU! Yes I know the Shimano cassette doedn't fit on the XD body. But SRAM makes a freehub FOR Shimano cassettes, that was the freehub body I was going to use. I need the lower gears I do not have the strength to "push" a 10 nor 11 nor 17 tooth cog. Thank you.

    Hi there. I`m currently looking into buying a second hand mtb with 10 speed and was wondering if it was possible to upgrade to a 12 speed and if so how difficult is it. It has a MDK DC22LW rear hub. Thank you
