The truth is that it's not about living without Google, it's living without (somewhat) third party apps that you rely on and that rely on Google's service. It's an important distinction that no reviews ever seem to make clear. Yes, the apps run but it will it send notifications? Probably not. Will it require some Google specific services like Maps API? Likely. Will some apps not run at all? Sometimes.
