Huawei 4G Router Tips, Hacks and Tricks for better performance. B535-232 Band locking

In this video we share our review of using the Huawei B535-232 (which is the same Router you get with the Motorhome WiFi 5G Flex Package.) and some great features to help it perform better, when using external antennas including Band Locking.
If you don't want to purchase second hand you can purchase a New or Renewed B535-232 from Amazon here
amzn.to/3HYffEA
You can find the Java Script to add the Band Locking Menu here:
explorevan.uk/huawei
And here is a step by step of how to add the bookmark in Chrome.
kzread.info/dash/bejne/ea2El6uvl9CYZ7g.html
If you are using Chrome on an Android Phone there are a couple of weird niggles that you need to work around so a couple of things to check.
1. Adding the bookmark - I added the bookmark from the laptop into Chrome and then this synced to Chrome on the Android phone - rather than creating it on the phone.
2. After you have logged in to the Admin page for the router you can't open the bookmark from the bookmarks menu as in Chrome for Android it doesn't apply the JavaScript to the page you are on. What you need to do is open the bookmark by searching for it in the address bar.
You can see this process in this video. kzread.info/dash/bejne/gpaX2LuEms-shbg.html

    I brought this router when you recommended it and I can't fault it. I was going to get external antennas till i started to test it with the bunny ear antennas set to mixed setting and it performs great and I even have it mounted behind my fridge built into the cupboard and I always have great signal. Got a screen shot of 98 down and 30 up

    Great video and very practical tips. The Java script also works on Huawei B818-263 and thanks to your tips managed to figure the fast 4g band in my very rural area, and unsurprisingly it turned the lower dB 80 band was slow barely over8mbs and the high db 112 was getting over 35mbs. Now up the ladder and let's try and get them DBs to lower numbers.

It is a B535-333 indeed and it now works perfect. i first got it to work with safari develop mode were you can force it to read java script. and now it works with chrome as you showed in the video. seen download speed with internal antenna of 203mbps now going to look for a good external antenna.

    Excellent video, as always! Do you know of this is possible on a Netgear Nighthawk M1, by any chance? If not, do you think its worth selling that, and getting one of these at a far cheaper price? Thanks!

  • @ExploreVanUK

    @ExploreVanUK

    Thanks glad it's interesting! It's a difficult one with the Nighthawk, as technically it is a category 16 router allowing up to 4 band carrier aggregation, if that is supported by the network you use. But it will only be able to do that to its full potential when using its internal antennas so if used with external antennas it will limit the bands that can be connected and as you may not be able to select the best one. A band locking feature has been discussed and this thread suggests it is possible with updated firmware, but its not something I have tried as I don't have a Nighthawk. community.netgear.com/t5/Cell-Service-Mobile-Hotspot/Nighthawk-M1-selection-of-LTE-Frequency-Band/td-p/1539456 Personally I would pick the Huawei over the Nighthawk due to the price. But if you use it without external antennas then the Nighthawk would probably be the better option. Or you could try the firmware in the link above. If you try it let me know how you get on!

    Got the router and it seem to be quite good without external antenna though it depends on which pitch we get at the site we keep our caravan at. I am thinking of getting an antenna for it and may try the bunny ears 1st if I can find some. Which external antenna do you recommend that’s not to expensive. Not sure I want to drill through the van but am thinking of putting it on a pole or on top of the van and just route the cable through a window.

    Hi I probably didn't explain it very well. In my experience if you set it to Band 1 and allow it to connect. - Then switch it back to Auto it will hold on to Band 1 as it's primary channel and then select an addition to aggregate to. But if you know which bands you want it to aggregate you can set it just to connect to them by entering "1 + 20" for example.

    Great router, only had mine two days, managed to bag one for £20 off marketplace. I have an external puck but not seeing the benefit of it yet, I’m thinking that as I have a pop up roof on my camper and I’m placing the router up there,that the internal 4x4 is performing better than the puck because the router is essentially outside but inside ?

  • @ExploreVanUK

    @ExploreVanUK

    Hi, yes in a pop top in a reasonable signal area I would imagine the internal antennas are likely perform better as they will aggregate more signals. If the signal was weak / just one band was available then you'd probably find the puck performed better than the internal antennas.

I’ll be fitting this in my touring caravan and just guessing that I’ll have to adjust whichever band it uses at different location’s depending on the signal? Hi glad it was helpful! Yes if moving location its always worth checking out what bands work best in each location. We tend to leave ours on auto, but if we get to a location where the performance isn;t good enough for us, we dive into the Java script to see if we can improve it - and generally we can. This would be the same if you change to a different provide in the same location as the bands one provider uses may be different to another. Hope that helps and happy travels!

    Hi, that’s great to hear, glad you like it. No I’m afraid these Home routers don’t have the WiFi repeater function which is what would be needed to do that. It’s the more mobile focused routers like the Teltonika range or the GL.iNet GL-X3000 that support they. In fact the GL-X3000 goes one better and allows you to rather your phone by USB to provide an extra connection. Hi, thanks for the great content. Just for clarification are you saying that with this router that the internal aerial are better than or as good as the external ones. I am investigating routers at the moment and the aerial you mentioned is now over £200.

  • @ExploreVanUK

    @ExploreVanUK

    11 ай бұрын

    Yes and No, it’s a bit complicated. From a Carrier Aggregation perspective the internal antennas are better as they are 4x4 mimo. However if the router is in a van / house the signal that gets to the routers will be weakened by the van/house. Being able to add an external antenna avoids that and depending on the model will also have a higher gain so will connect to weak signals better. But as the external antenna connections are only 2x2 it can’t benefit from Carrier aggregation. Massively over simplified in a good signal area where multiple band signals can get to the unit the internal antennas are probably going to be best. In a weaker signal area where only a single band or no signal at all can get to the unit then the external antenna will work better.

    My pick if you were looking to use it on the move would be the Teltonika RUT241 or 240 They are native 12v designed for use on the road and very robust. No real point going for something with a high category as you'll be constantly moving cell and it would spend more time switching than it would give benefit. In my experience the RUT241 was great at holding on to a signal and only switching to a new cell when it really needed to, so that meant a much more seamless connection and less loss of signal when streaming music etc as you go along. If you wanted to keep the cost down though you could do a lot worse than the ZTE MF910 that we reviewed here. kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZpOYmtitd7CoZ8o.html

The antenna connection is MiMo (Multiple in / Multiple Out) which is the way the connection works. The plug type is SMA. Roof antennas will generally come with connection lead permanently attached, you just need to make sure you get one that is 2x2 MiMo and uses SMA connections. Hi - all the standard USB to 12v adapters I have seen max out at 0.6 Amps for the 12v output - which may not be enough for the router to run effectively - the mains power unit has a 12v rating of 1 Amp. You may be able to find a USB C to 12v adapter that will go over 1 Amp but you would be reliant on the USB socket being able to provide the higher current expected for USB-C protocol for it to work correctly.

  • @karl9460

    @karl9460

    Жыл бұрын

    Basically Chris, there is little difference. Mainly it comes down to congestion. Let me put it this way, the higher you go in Ghz ( not G ) the more physical things you can see interfere with a signal. Technically, if you think about it, therefore 2,4ghz is better than 5ghz. However, older routers were all only 2.4ghz, so the theory (?) is that 5ghz is less congested. My own personal thoughts are this may less true now than in the past, and may be less true in the future. Basically, 2.4 travels further, but 5ghz was once less congested. Most 5Ghz have the ability to switch to 2.4Ghz and will do so when it makes sense. I know this is getting confusing.... Get a 5Ghz because although 5Ghz might not be better than 2.4Ghz it is another set of frequencies that can be used when needed,. Jeez, that was a lot harder to put into words than it was in my head.

Example: 4G/5G turned only as a pure “modem” with a singular (or In and Out) ethernet Port, turn old PC as a router, use a separate Switch, use a separate Wi-Fi AP (Ubiquiti UniFi perhaps..?). The cost effectiveness in this would mostly lean on the “old PC” that already exists. I’ve heard some cases when those things can be as good routers as some pretty expensive quality grade routers. Not counting in the electricity cost. Or would such a thing be just a mess of a network?

    @@ExploreVanUK I kinda think so as well. I might end up trying it gradually someday in the future. Depending on how the devices themselves upgrade with new features over that “?”-time-period. There are some smaller upgrades I will do eventually either way, such as having some cheap smart throttling set for the Wi-Fi and such.

    Very strange - we use it without problem on Android Phone, iPad, iPhone and M1 Macbook Air without an issue (as recently as this morning). In Android it is a bit weird in that you have to open the Bookmark from the URL search rather than the bookmark page. You can see in this video here. kzread.info/dash/bejne/gpaX2LuEms-shbg.html You can see us doing it on an iPhone here: kzread.infob0m4xRIUJac As for adding the bookmark in the first place you can see us do that step by step in Chrome ona Macbook in this video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/ea2El6uvl9CYZ7g.html As you are struggling on all devices I would check the following: When you copy and Paste the Java Script - you are picking it all (sometimes you don't realise it has only copied half of it) Plus make sure you don't have any extra spaces, or Lines at the start or finish of the code. To make it easier for us we create the Bookmark in Chrome on the Laptop and make sure it works. Then that bookmark syncs to Chrome Browsers on the various other devices as they are all signed in to the same account. A final thing to check is that it is definitely a B535-232 model and it has the Huawei Firmware. If it is a different model or has bespoke firmware then we've not tested it and that may be why it doesn't work.

  • @ExploreVanUK

    @ExploreVanUK

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi - yes this is correct. The + on 4G+ indicates that the router is connected using Carrier Aggregation - combining the signal of more than one band. If you have the setting to only allow one band to connect then it can't do Carrier Aggregation and will only ever be 4G. When showing B20 4G+ its main band is B20 but it is supplementing it with a second band. When it shows B20 4G it is only using B20. You need to experiment with the Bands available and the speed they provide to set the router to connect to the best 2. (eg B20 + B3) On Auto it will generally just connect to the 2 strongest which aren't necessarily the fastest. Hope that makes sense.

    We've not tried the MR600 so can only comment on the specifications and what we have heard. The MR600 is Cat 6 and the Huawei is Cat 7 - So Huawei could perform slightly better. We know you can lock the Bands on the B535 as we show in this video without modifying the firmware, apparently the latest firmware on the MR600 includes this as standard but there are varying reports on how effective it is. TP link has 3 year Warranty B535 seem to have more available secondhand if you want to pick up a bargain The B535 is very popular, so there is lots of support available on various forums, the MR600 less so. But overall they are very much similar so there is not a lot to pick between them.

  • @ExploreVanUK

    @ExploreVanUK

    24 күн бұрын

    Are you connecting your phone to the router by WiFi when you are using the Sim in the router. If so this could be the cause. Phones will generally not complete some data heavy tasks when connected to a mobile network like backing up certain apps, upload photos, downloading new firmware / app updates. But when the phone is connected to the router by WiFi it assumes it’s a “home” WiFi connection and will do the those data heavy tasks. With some phones you can set the WiFi connection to “Low Data” mode to reduce this.

  • @ExploreVanUK

    @ExploreVanUK

    24 күн бұрын

    Another reason could be down to the bandwidth available. Streaming Apps like KZread, Netflix, iPlayer etc on TVs / phones / tablets / laptops dynamically change their quality based on the bandwidth available. So if the available bandwidth via your router is high they will stream in higher quality than if the bandwidth of the connection on your phone is lower. Some apps you can switch the quality from automatic and set it yourself which is a good idea to limit usage, there may be no need to stream in 4K even if the connection will allow it.

    I think you should have not set it back to auto. Instead if you wanted it to avoid band 3 but use just band 1 and 20 you could have put 1+20

    @@ExploreVanUK Isn't there a way to set the Main band to something else than 1, when you choose several bands. Like if I want 20 to be the main, but 1 to be allowed? Seems like it just chooses the lowest value as main, no matter the order.
