We visited Hualien, Taiwan to experience the famous Taroko Gorge, but we found so much more in the city too! So, we made a vlog of some of the best things to do in Hualien, which includes the renowned National Park, as well as some of Hualien’s unique street foods, beautiful beaches and scenery and some amazing experiences around the county!

Planning your own trip to Hualien? Add these to your itinerary!
1. Visit Taroko Gorge National Park - it is easily the highlight of Hualien and perfect for hiking and nature enthusiasts! (Featured in this video are the Zhuilu and Shakadong trails. As mentioned, you can apply for permits for the Zhuilu trail here: npm.cpami.gov.tw/en/apply_1_2...)
2. Spend a day at the beautiful Qixingtan Beach and town - known for its views and scenery!
3. Check out Liyu Lake, the largest lake in Eastern Taiwan and filled with tons of lake and lakeside activities!
4. Have some extra time? Have a beach day at 鹽寮 蔚藍海岸 and 七七高地 to see some amazing, panoramic views over Hualien City. (I believe in English this is known as the White Dunes and Coline 77?)
5. Try some of Hualien’s unique snacks at the Dongdamen Night Market!

I am very surprised that you also went to Hualien. I lived in Hualien for more than a year and served as a soldier! (Young men in Taiwan are in good health and are obliged to serve in the military)...During those days, when I still call me going to Hualien, it was not "going" to Hualien, but "going back" to Hualien...the mountains there, The sea, aborigines, streams and rivers are so shocking and nostalgic... When we were in the military camp in Hualien, we often went to Taroko Gorge to explore during the holidays. Before the National Park banned people from playing in the water, we also went to swim in the Shakadang River... Haha... We like to ride in the middle of the night The locomotive goes to the Yexi Hot Spring deep in the canyon, soaking in the hot spring in the canyon at night... that is a very memorable memory... If you come back to Hualien next time, I suggest you rent a locomotive to travel... As long as you have a locomotive, Then you will be able to play more places and adventures... When I was watching you walking on the Shakadang trail, I didn’t realize your editing creativity... Later I understood... You took the process of walking Shakadang as a backbone and a big tree, and connected them in series , interspersed with... other clips of your travels in Hualien... this is a great idea... like a big tree stretching out its branches and leaves... haha. Another thing that surprised me was... You actually went to the estuary of the Hualien River, which is the tip of the starting point of the Haimai Mountains... that place, Taiwanese people don't necessarily know... this is amazing. Hualien and Taitung are beautiful places, very suitable for living for a while...I know that there are many artists who live in seclusion in Hualien, and some foreigners who come to Taiwan live there...Some of them live in Taitung, surfing and tracing the river every day And adventures... such as this www.youtube.com/@followxiaofei Next time you have the opportunity to go back to Hualien, let’s have fun for a few more days! I wish you all the best.

Hualien is so beautiful! I think it has become more popular with foreigners lately - we decided to go because we have friends who own a tour company there and told us how awesome it is! That sounds like you had a lovely time while you lived there. Next time we will need to look into renting a vehicle of some sort! We're a bit afraid of scooters (we crashed one a few years ago!), and our US drivers licenses had just expired at the time we were in Hualien, but next time we will need to plan better! And yes!! that is exactly what we did on the Shakadong!! We did not quite get to make this video as we had initially planned it because we had a family emergency going on at the time - so we had a lot of plans changed. BUT we still wanted to make something about Hualien! We did not know the estuary was such a special place! It was one of our favorite days there though. It was so beautiful and peaceful! We will definitely check out the youtube you recommended. And would love to keep in touch and visit again sometime. We loved Taiwan so we definitely want to visit again in the future!! Thanks again for watching, and taking the time to share all of this! We really love getting comments like yours that share extra stories and information about a place - it makes it more special!! :D

Taiwan deserves higher profile internationally. From my experiences, Taiwan is always confused with Thailand to a lot of foreigners. China is another factor making Taiwan less-mentioned around the globe. Taiwan has to boost itself more to the world. Taiwan is not only famous TSMC(microchips) and Boba milk tee. We have amazing landscape, 268 mountains over 3000 meter high, beautiful beaches, friendly people, affordable and delicious food and convenient transit. We need you to tell your audiences Taiwan is an underrated hidden gem.

Agreed!! I did not know Taiwan got mixed up with Thailand, but that makes sense I guess. Maybe Taiwan is less reliant on tourism so it does not get marketed as heavily in foreign markets, but it is definitely becoming more popular by word of mouth!!

This episode is really great, I was very moved after watching it, you have studied Hualien very thoroughly! No matter the theme, content, dialogue, editing are beyond the standard! This kind of excellent quality video is not inferior to the programs of TLC channel at all, I hope everyone can help share your videos! In fact, TLC channel can consider adopting your videos or directly hire you both as producers and hosts! The scenery in eastern Taiwan is really amazing, and through your video, I can feel that the local air quality must be very good! Watching you walk that dangerous path, my feet feel paralyzed unconsciously! You found that the roof with a 360-degree panoramic view of Hualien is really amazing, I want to give you applause! Kuann-tshâ-pang/ 棺財版 is a Taiwanese snack, a local specialty in Tainan, and is also well-known in Hualien. It was founded in the 1940s in the market commonly known as Shakariba on Zhongzheng Road, Tainan. Taroko's bamboo tube rice is special because it must be taken from fresh bamboo, so the rice will have a light bamboo fragrance! It is completely different from the bamboo tube rice that is sautéed with white rice or added with too much seasoning in general tourist attractions. Thanks a lot to you for your hard work and sharing this amazing video! 👍🥰🙏

Coffin Toast originates from Tainan. When it was first invented back in the 40s, the stuffing mainly consisted of chicken liver. In the 90s, chowder was introduced as a filling, which significantly boosted its popularity. As a result, the fillings nowadays predominantly feature a chowder base.

@@IfWeGoToActually it was created one hundred year ago in the hotel of Tainan train station during Japanese rule. There was a western style restraint inside the hotel. The end of the day when the restaurant was about to close, the employees could have the food home left from that day. Since the toast was a bit dry and hard , Someone deep-fired the toast and ate it with the corn soup. People found it very delicious to eat in this way. Since then, it became a signature dish of Tainan and considered as a classic Taiwanese dish.

@@IfWeGoTo yes, im hyped and ready to go. Just one question. I know you kind of made taipei as a base of sorts to film a bunch of videos but realistically, how many days would you set aside for a holiday stay with daytrips included? I plan to explore the island but staying in Taipei the longest. Is a week too long for Taipei?

  • @IfWeGoTo

    @IfWeGoTo

    9 ай бұрын

It will come before you know it!! How long is your overall trip? I felt like going to places like Yangmingshan, Beitou, and Juifen were very easy from Taipei's city center. I think Tainan is do-able from Taipei as well. A week sounds like a good period of time if you want to see Taipei pretty well with a couple of day trips, but I think you could easily do Taipei's major highlights in 2-4 days depending on how quick you want to move. Hualien is definitely worth a couple of days, Taroko takes a little while to get out to! What other cities are you planning on visiting? I think most, like Taipei, you could see the major highlights in a couple of days! The cities are a lot smaller than say like... Tokyo or something!

@@IfWeGoTo thanks for the replies! Tomewise my plan feels feasible. Its going to be a 2 week trip so I can do it visa free. Basically the plan for now is day 1 is an arrival day just to get supplies and my bearings and dinner in a night market. Then about 7 days at least to go around the island. I plan to overnight in jiufen and have 2 days in hualien before a long train ride to Kaohsiung (2-3 days). Then Tainan and Taichung, finally back to Taipei. I plan to stay longer in taipei in the end so some friends can fly in for a few days. I just want to make sure that i have enough time that i dont short change taipei if i suddenly extend my stay somewhere. Enjoy the rest of your travels! Thanks again for the vids!

We are extremely fortunate to have seen it prior to the earthquake - almost a year to the day (it took a long time to edit these videos). I am very sad for the Taiwanese that Taroko was so heavily damaged - it was such a beautiful and special place that was made so accessible. It's terrible that the Shakadong trail was basically wiped away and even more sad that people were on it when the quake struck. :( Hopefully the park will be able to be rebuilt and enjoyed again in the future.

scallion pancake - yeah I can't eat egg often, and last time in Taiwan I got COVID (probably on the plane flight) and in isolation with my 'worst sore throat ever' the only food I could taste was scallion pancake with bacon - I just loved that as my saving grace. A trick for eating xiaolongbao (soup dumplings) with very hot soup inside is to put them in a spoon so when it breaks and the hot soup comes, rather than burning your mouth it just collects in the spoon when you can swallow it as a lower temperature. Family Mart ice cream ? Dunno - I think that is my least favourite of the similar looking konbini cones - I think I prefer 7-Eleven or Lawson for hard chewy ice cream - I ate a lot of them up to last week in Tokyo heat wave.

I’m a Hualien local. I once tripped over a rock and broke my big toe (I was walking in bare foot) in Shakadang trail and it took 2 months to recover.😭 I never went to Shakadang since then. To anybody who came across my comment if you want to walk along the creeks, keep your shoes on! I like it when you said Xie-Xie (thank you) I once read a joke about an American tourist in Taiwan getting confused by the word because everyone around him was saying Shit-shit (thank you)!😂 The weirdest part is that the word for “that” in Chinese(那個) sounds exactly like the N-word.😳 So you see a lot of Chinese speakers pointing at things and people, saying “n****,n****,n****!” at the same time.😅 About the “sand flies” in Hualien… they’re called “small black mosquitos” in Taiwan because they just love stealing blood from people especially the non-locals😉 And then you count the amount of blood stolen by counting the black dots on your hands and legs.🤣Hualien is like a home base for them in Taiwan. According to taxonomy they belong to a different class from mosquitoes. When I moved here from Taipei 4y ago, those little guys really had my skin itching very badly but over the years I have become immune to them and the bites don’t irritate me a tiny bit now.😌 peace. I hope you enjoy your stay in Hualien. I’ve been to many countries and Hualien isn’t particularly “outstandingly” beautiful or “magnificent” compared to many places on Earth. But if you are just looking for a place to relax, Hualien is the place. (Personally I like Philippines/Indonesia more tbh🤫this is coming from a Taiwanese person

Definitely some words in other languages sound similar and have a VERY different meaning!! The sand flies are awful! I hate those thing. In the USA I believe they call them no-see-ums.. and I know some other english speaking countries call them midges. Wow, that's crazy! We thought Hualien was stunning - definitely on par with some of the beautiful places we've been, but it is more like.. mountains. I think the Philippines and Indonesia have more like.. beautiful ocean landscapes!

@@IfWeGoTo called 無糖米漿 Mijiang is a Taiwanese beverage staple most commonly comprised of toasted rice and peanuts blended together and then boiled into a thick, comforting horchata-like beverage served hot or cold. You can have them mixed into with glutinous rice balls or fried "cruellers" on the side. It is usually sweetened with brown sugar. The best ones to be found are in the south.. the bigger cities seem to be "healthier" thus harder to find lol

I'm not sure if you are still in Taiwan. If you are in the suburbs in Taiwan, you can use special anti-mosquito spray for small black mosquitoes. (小黑蚊Forcipomyia taiwana)The red and swollen bites on the legs in the video are not ordinary mosquitoes. Small black mosquitoes are really annoying!

Qixingtan can be translated by its meaning as Seven Stars Lake (There was a lake). As for the marbles mentioned in other people's comments, I think pavements in black-and-white in Hualien are designed to symbolize the colors of marbles. 17:25 The black-and-white boulevard in the night market is probably an example. I'm the guy who's been to 58 countries, and I totally agree that Taroko Gorge is super pretty, indeed worth visiting!!

Oh thank you for sharing all of this! We live learning a little bit more! 58 is a ton!! Do you have any other recommendations a bit more off the beaten path? We’ve been to 37 now I believe! Mostly to fairly popular locations.

@@IfWeGoTo I mostly go to fairly popular locations too hahaha. I like Patagonia very much but it's popular. For Europe, I like Český Krumlov and Eze a lot. Both little towns. Meteora in Greek is super nice, and I was more impressed by it than by Athens and Santorini (Santorini is great though). Ancient Jerash in Jordan is not very well-known but turns out gorgeous, much bigger than Ephesus in Turkey. And Seattle in the summer is fantastic haha. Oh BTW I wanna suggest again that it's probably not a very good idea to visit Taiwan in the summer because it's so hot. Recently I seldom go out due to the heat in Taipei😂 (I also live in Shilin.) But if the weather in Southeast Asia is OK for you, then it's fine. Taipei isn't hotter.

Hahah no worry, I think many places get popular for a reason! Patagonia is definitely a huge bucket list spot for us! Thank you very much for sharing all of these spots, we have not been to them! Oh yes, we will definitely try to avoid it in the summer! We do love the heat, but only to a certain point hahaha. You get monsoons in that season too right?? We visited Taiwan in March/April/ early May this year (we're just VERY backlogged on our videos!!), it was a bit cool for us sometimes, but the weather was generally very nice, especially south of the island!

@@IfWeGoTo The monsoons (rain seasons) is in May and June in Taipei. Usually, the weather isn't too hot before Dragon Boat Festival. After it, summer begins. As for Patagonia, I stayed in El Chalten, El Calafate, and Puerto Natales (for Paine) for two weeks. These three towns are all highly recommended.
