Took me 8 years to get completely adjusted to transitioning to a new country and become comfortable again. By year eight, I had a college degree, a CPA license, my own house, 2 children and my own computer business. That was in 1977 when I moved to US for first year of collage and in those days, we didn't have computer and even a long distance call would cost a lot and so we only wrote letters. The first 3 nights I cried until my pillow case was all wet but by day 4, I decided it was a waste of time to cry, complain or even talk about how much I missed home. I went to the library and checked out a bunch of books to read and watched every English TV show that was available. Within a year my oral and written skills was proficient enough to find any jobs. My advise to all new immigrants, stop complaining and focus your time on learning English and technical skills to get a better job and better future. Stop dreaming, don't expect everything to be rosy after 1-2 years because your immigration journey is just starting. Keep trying, you will be fine as long as you accept change and adapt.

Thank you for your kind sharing. It's my year 8 living in the uk, we love the lifestyle in here, and we are able to get a local job easily. We totally agree with the advise you give, stop complaining, start learning English. There is no place which only has good things, pros and cons always come together. Be positive and hard working, changes always could be opportunities.🤝
My parents were very successful and made a lot of money running several restaurants and came to the UK in the mid 1960’s. My father integrated very quickly and passed his driving test first time and mastered English very quickly. My mother on the other hand never fitted into British way of life. She enjoyed watching her HK soap dramas, played Majong and only ate Chinese dishes. She still can’t speak English and needs to depend on others to take her out and go to medical appointments. Without our support, she can’t survive and I remember as a child under the age of 10 having to accompany her to the Drs and translating about contraception. My father was so fed up with her because she needs someone to drive her around and being chaperone. My father did bully her because she was weak and needy. Personally, I would not like to live a life always having to depend on others and she was never able to use the London underground because she couldn’t read the train map or which platform to take on overground trains. Waiting for a bus in the cold weather is also something to consider.

They came to the UK on a ship in their late twenties with only the clothes on their backs. By the time they were in their 40’s they were already well established business owners in the communities including London China town. My mother never worked but was very good with the abacus and very good at counting money. My father couldn’t cook and still can’t but he was lucky in finding good chefs and sponsored them from HK. Opportunities were much easier and simpler then nowadays. None of us children followed them in the restaurant business but my parents really cared about education and sent all their 4 kids to private and boarding schools. They insisted we all learn to play a musical instrument and learn Cantonese on Sundays in Chinatown. To be honest, the UK government is really not doing a great job and misusing public money. It’s a joke that taxpayers are paying lawyers to help Boris Johnson fight his covid inquiry. Almost £350K already spent and this case is still ongoing with the judge requesting all Whatsapp messages to be handed over. It’s most likely Boris Johnson held a wedding during covid restrictions and many government ministers including Rishi Sunak attended in his country residence Chequers. Why should taxpayers pay for their legal fees when they misbehaved and took advantage of their power? I rather keep my hard earned cash for myself. It’s also such a joke all the illegal immigrants are staying in hotels at the expense of £6 million a day all paid for by taxpayers. This country is taxing the rich to pay for all its mistakes including Liz Truss and her disastrous policies.

With hard work you can make it. My parents came over in the late 70's with no English, no qualifications, no money and lived from their suitcase yet they still made ends meet. Today we're more technologically advance and easy communications. Migrating to the UK is so much more easier now.

@onedegreewest9303 Of course, with hard work you can make it. 12-14 hrs working per day it worth ? 70s UK' economic was extremely better than 2023 economic situation, especially UK left EU , fully involved and supported -Ukraine war. Now inflation, prices and energy getting higher and higher, plus the whole world economy is getting worse and worse.

@@derekng958 They do say 靠自己雙手. Yes, the cost of living compared to salary makes it so much harder especially for first time buyers. I believe there are plenty of jobs out there and with this generation of HK migrants aren't just limited to working in Takeaways and low paid jobs. My point is they aren't arriving here with just a suitcase, they are better educated aren't as pitiful as my parents generation.

Driving in London is chaotic and can be a nightmare with heavy traffic, congestion zone charges and parking fees.

In the past, your parents could evade taxes and made tons of money. I think electronic transactions have eliminated most of these opportunities.
