HS51 Screwcutting gearbox oilers for my Harrison 140 lathe

I made a set of oilers for my screwcutting gearbox, to replace the original grease nipples which were difficult to use.

very useful, I've a Harrison 140 myself ad noted it didn't lubricate the headsock bearings in low range, I almost never use them gears as I've an anjust quick threader but its always playing on my mind, I too had my suspicions about adjusting my bearings, my play turned out to be the taper on my chuck fitting, my approach was much less scientific than yours , my lathe had also had the gears chewed, far worse than your own and i removed the resulting swarf from the gearbox in the same manner as yourself, I also placed a magnet in the gearbox and its not bolted down , this worries me a little but I've never had it move in over a year use , do check the taper on the chuck and spindle, I have considered fitting a one shot lube system to my gearbox

Hi, my spindle taper and chuck fitting are pretty good. Several people have suggested my headstock gearbox hydraulic oil is too thick and that I should replace it with modern thinner ATF - which may give more splash at low rpm. I've kind of taken the view for the moment that Tellus 33 (ISO 68) hydraulic oil was good enough in 1971 when the lathe was made and it should be good enough now - but they do have a point because oil technology has moved forward a long way. I've bought a small 5v gear pump motor with an idea to create a pumped feed to the bearings. That's a project under development which may feature on a future vid. I'm waiting for the weather to warm up a bit!! Cheers
