The HS2 depot at Washwood Heath in Birmingham will be home to the HS2 control centre and will be used to clean and maintain the trains, as well as being home to the driver training centre and train simulators. In this video I provide an update about the construction and further information about the depot.

Yep.. All it takes to cancel a project.... approved by parliament it all was.. A PM to announce its cancellation at a party conference, avoiding parliment.. !! Maybe next Restart will be done at party conference also, avoiding parliment ;-))

Hopefully the HS2 can regroup. All the Phase1 track engineering technologies (viaducts, tunnels, and high-speed) can be used going forward to perhaps develop cheaper manufacturing and civils. Then maybe they can go for a "lower cost" Phase2a plan to Crewe and then up to Manchester and Leeds. We will have at least 5 years to work it out now. Also, there are some baseload electric power systems needing to be developed and installed before more rail expansions. I'm over here in America and taking detailed HS2 notes to apply in the states across the pond.

@@pedromorgan99 Yes, and Japan has a well established baseload electric power grid...UK will get some more GenIII+ and GenIV reactor plants soon, but perhaps in 10 years time.

It is incredibly frustrating seeing all the infrastructure being constructed that is designed for 18 trains per hour, but will likely only ever see 10tph 🫤

Rail Focus and Chris Thank You for this update. Now shaping up. Great review of the WWH site plans and details. And some glimpse of network plans @3:15 . Great going. Since we have until 2029 perhaps there will be _opportunities_ to extend the HS2 225mph maximum speed line to Crewe, we can hope. The HS2 tracks have to extend north to provide the line separation to avoid the slower traveling heritage commuter and freight trains.

When people look at costs most never understand the costs associated with the ground preparation required before actual construction starts. All down the route major exceptional groundworks have had to be undertaken. The re-use of 'Brown Field' sites is far better than eating more and more Green Belt but they have huge costs attached.

Absolutely. I don't think HS2 gets enough credit for the remediation work being carried out and the value it will bring to areas in need of regeneration.

I recall some of the Phase2a Crewe Station plans were "low-impact" type construction...the recent modular station designs at Network Rail "Winning design to improve smaller stations" are interesting too. I think RailNatter (#112) covered some small and medium size modular station topics.

The plans for Crewe were relatively modest, just making slight platform alterations for 400m long sets, but Crewe already has some lengthy platforms. But ultimately Crewe does need a rebuild, with or without 2a

No, because people in the uk are thinking just because removing greenfields is going to make th cliemate change worse. Are you bad about hs2? If you guys have a brain, you would know that hs2 would take cars off the roads and let me tell you something. Do you think that these green fields can reduce climate change? The answer is NO. And because people are spreading fake news about hs2, this project is slowing down balme the Ahiit NIMBYS, THE WOODLANDS TRUST, AND THOSE IDOTIC ENVIRONMENTAL IDOTS Look at Australia and tell me one thing, WHY DON'T HAVE PEOPLE NIMBYS. PEOPLE PROTESTING ABOUT PROJECTS RUINING THE GRRENFEILDS AND WOODLANDS, IT BECAUSE PEOPLE THEIR KNOW THEIR PLACE AND THEY ARE NOT SELFISH. IF YOU GUYS ARE WOUDERING WHY THIS COSTING TO MUCH, YOU CAN BLAME THE GOVERNMENT FINE, BUT HOW ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENTAL, NIMBY BASTARDS WHO WERE PROTESTING, BECAUSE HS2 WOULD RUNIN THIER DUM STUIP LITTLE TOWN THAY WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF NO WHERE HA???. The season why the uk can't build things like this is because of thses NIMBYS, ENVIRONMENTAL PEOPLE HAVING EXCUSES LIKE DESTROYING WILD LIFE, CLIMATE CHANGE, AND RUNING THE LANDSCAPE HS2 WILL HELP REDUCE CLIMATE CHANGE THSES GREENFIELDS WILL NOT DO ANYTHING. IF GREENFIELDS HAVE TO GO FOR THE UK TO HAVE A FUTURE SO BE IT THEN!!!

Perhaps I think the HS2 on heritage lines will not be able to run much more than 100mph because the HS2 are not pendalino type so can not handle fast curves. It is not clear how fast the HS2 on heritage lines will run ? Maybe Chris knows best.

HS2 is going to be fantastic for this country. Other countries have had it since the 70s. When you think about how much money it will make once it's built, I think it will more than pay for itself in the next 100 years & you think about the about of money that it has already brought into our City, when deutsche Bank & HSBC said they only relocated to Birmingham because of HS2. Also, how much has a hole is the West Midlands benefiting from HS2, but you have to many stupid people & the not in our back yards to notice this & this scum trash government that have cancelled HS2 From Manchester to Scotland & in 2024, still expect people to sit on a slow ass train from Manchester for over 3 hours!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! hehe. All I can say is, I've been waiting 5 years & roll on the 4th of July!!!!

The "advantage" of being later to the high-speed is that UK (and hopefully later USA) gets the cream of the crop technologies and civil engineering. All the difficult kinks are all worked out now so everything is very high quality, low risk and perhaps at a lower "mass produced" cost vs. 1st of a kind. I hope we can all benefit from HS2 greatly.

You need to get some anger mangement, so you would perfer more roads than a High Speed Railways, which will take cars and lorries of our congested roads whilst passengers continue to board over congested West Coast mainline trains.

I think rail will always be with us human commuters and freight here on Earth. Everything trains, planes, cars, lorries, ships, and even narrowboats (local and intercity) are all part of the transport ecosystem. I think we will need more baseload electric power plants (new state-of-the-art GenIII+ and GenIV nuclear too) in order to generate the electricity needed to electrify many things car, bus, and train. They _still_ need to electrify NPR, TRU, EWR, and up the East Coast...this will also cost 100B+ more ! The UK, USA, and Canada are busy catching up with EU ! Australia does not even have nuclear power plants yet...but will start soon to catch up.

Immediately to the West of the LDV site was the Metropolitan Cammell later Alstom plant, I used to work there for several years refurbishing Cl.56 locos for Colas Rail amongst a number of other locomotives and rolling stock. There was also a Cemex plant between the MetCam plant and the railway line (Not the one which is there now on the opposite side of the line.) We had hoped that they would maintain the rail link for a time to remove the excavated soil but that was not to be. I believe all the spoil went out by road. Interestingly the old admin building for MetCam was converted into flats some years back and still exists on the road running across the rear of the Washwood Heath site, a tiny piece of Metrpolitan Cammell history still remaining. Good video, thanks!

Most of the spoil was reused on site to level the site, I just forgot to mention. The crushed concrete was used on site for haul roads or for Delta Junction. I'm sure some material left the site by road, but not much 🙂
