HRH Tengku Hassanal at COP27 Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt

WATCH: His Royal Highness the Regent of Pahang, Crown Prince Tengku Hassanal Ibrahim Alam Shah Ibni Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah during his opening address at the ‘Multi-stakeholder partnerships in sustainable peatland management for climate change in Malaysia’ at the Cop27 summit in Egypt on 10 November 2022.
Addressing how GHG emission can be reduced through rehabilitation of Southeast Pahang Peat Swamp Forest, Tengku Hassanal said, "In Malaysia, more than 50% of our peatlands have been cleared and drained for agriculture and plantations over the past 50 years and a large portion of our remaining peat swamp forests have been logged.”
Tengku Hassanal’s speech came during his appearance at the World Leaders Summit of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27) in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt.
Tengku Hassanal further reiterated how the indigenous People and local communities in Malaysia have been the stewards of the land for thousands of years and their active engagement in preventing and reversing forest and peatland degradation is essential.
Tengku Hassanal has dedicated efforts towards better protection of peatlands and forests in Pahang.
These include, but are not limited to, the establishment of the Pahang State Parks Corporation and the Pahang Biodiversity Council to better conserve natural ecosystems and biodiversity, undertaking a pilot project for rewetting and fire prevention for 1700 hectares of peatlands in Pekan, Pahang in partnership with the state government agencies, local indigenous communities, oil palm plantations and NGOs, initiating a project to support the development of a State Action Plan on Peatlands and prepare an Integrated Management Plan for the Southeast Pahang peatland landscape; and initiating a study of peat swamp forests in Southeast Pahang and lowland forests in the Tekai region, to explore options for better protection and rehabilitation of forests and peatlands.
“I hope that everyone attending today will play a role in spreading the message of the importance of action to urgently protect and restore our remaining peatlands for their important roles for carbon storage, water management and biodiversity conservation and well as sustaining the lives of local communities,” said Tengku Hassanal at the end of his address.
