Hrad Beckov I Beckov Castle

Beckov Castle
Dejiny:
Hrad ako starý spomína už Anonymova kronika z 12. storočia. Potvrdil to aj archeologický výskum, podľa ktorého najstaršie osídlenie hradného brala pochádza z prelomu letopočtu.
Vápencové bralo nad brodom Váhu na pomedzí Trenčianskej a Nitrianskej župy malo značný strategický význam, a preto tu v 12. storočí postavili kamenný hrad.
History:
The castle is already mentioned as old in Anonymous' chronicle from the 12th century. This was also confirmed by archaeological research, according to which the oldest settlement of the castle rampart dates back to the turn of the millennium.
The limestone hill above the Váha ford on the border between Trenčia and Nitra counties had considerable strategic importance, which is why a stone castle was built here in the 12th century. It consisted of a four-sided tower with a protective wall, to which a two-story castle palace was attached. At the time of the rise of power of Matúš Čák Trenčianske, Beckov belonged to his domain. In the second half of the 14th century, the castle was owned by the Stibor family, originally from Poland, who at that time represented one of the most powerful families in Hungary. During their reign, the castle, which they made the center of their vast possessions, experienced its greatest boom.
At the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries, they proceeded to its lavish reconstruction, during which they raised the castle towers and built an upper Gothic palace with a knight's hall and a chapel. In the middle of the 16th century, the castle was fortified due to the Turkish threat. Then they built a cannon tower in the lower courtyard and raised the perimeter walls of the castle. At that time, the castle was already owned by the Bánffy family. After their death in 1646, the castle and estate were divided among their successors. However, they did not take care of its maintenance and repairs anymore, and the castle slowly began to deteriorate. The fire that broke out in the castle in 1727 destroyed most of the buildings and it has been abandoned since then.
