HPI Thinks You're Dumb. [Savage Flux XL V2]

Join me as we take a quick look at some pretty sketchy advertising practices. What do you think of this?
NOTE: HPI HAS UPDATED THE SPECS ON THEIR SITE. The width of the XL is now shown at 470 mm. So according to the updated specification it will be 25 mm wider than the X. I don't believe this really changes the nature of this video so I'm going to leave it up but it is something to be aware of.

    Thanks for making this video, you earned a sub. I know I'm a little late but it's good to call out this BS. I get it's marketing and all that bs but most places at least acknowledge somewhere that things are not to scale. As far as price you can preorder at omgrc for 899.99. I doubt the price will change even if Hpi hasn't officially put it down somewhere. At this rate I don't think Hpi is long for this world, there's a reason that it's gone under so many times. I genuinely don't understand what they're doing and how people keep defending them. My main question always is, in what world do old designs like this keep going up in price? Most everything else the older something gets the cheaper it gets. I completely agree with your other responses it shouldn't be more than 650 and that's considering the new inflated prices.

    That's a marketing trick... anyway, i don't think someone will buy this thing thinking it's a 1/5 without reading the specs... Something has to be wrong with the width, the XL has extended axles, also the axles part number is different from the X to the XL

    Yeah I've been hearing that and I put a note in the description about it. I was going off of the size of specifications of the truck as well as the image of the hex adapter itself neither of which show that the truck will have hex extenders. What made me make the video is someone I know messaged me excited about how huge the xl was going to be based on that specific picture. If the picture fooled him I'm sure it's going to fool other people as well. Of course it is buyer beware so it's a buyer's fault if they don't know the size of what they're buying but I still think it's worth making the video to let people know.

    Thanks for the video, I was looking for more info on the Savage XL V2 and thought it was closer to xmaxx size until I saw this. I do have some other questions and hope you could provide some help.. I grew up with a Savage 25, and heavily modified it. I loved that truck so much. It was a seriously incredible basher and spent half of its time flying through the air. I left the hobby years ago and have had a Revo Brushless v1. I just got it up and running, and quickly cracked an A-Arm and pushrod. I repaired it but it does seem that part supply will be drying up unfortunately sooner then later. I really do like the Revo and how it moves but was figuring I should figure out if I am funneling money into a platform that I should just move off of or if it is worth keeping. Part of my enjoyment with the hobby was the modifying, bashing, and launching. Coming home in pieces, repairing, and going again next week. In my couple weeks of research it kinda feels to me like this aspect has faded out of the industry a bit. The Savage, TMaxx, LST, MGT had tons and tons of aftermarket support for every single piece. Does this still exist and I just havent ran across it yet? Any suggestions for bashing rigs that have great aftermarket support and big user groups?

  • @DoRC

    @DoRC

    5 ай бұрын

    Yes aftermarket support is still going strong for the big two brands which are currently Traxxas and Arrma. Particularly with the 6s Arrmas you can build an entire car out of nothing but upgraded parts. Durability has also dramatically increased from what you were used to back in the day so repairs aren't needed quite as often. Depending on your budget a 6S Kraton could be a good choice. If you want to go a little bit cheaper a 4s Kraton or Traxxas Maxx will be a lot of fun.

They are trying to come back and ALL you can do is bad mouth them over a advert picture! These are still two really great, durable trucks. SO glad to see HPI coming back to the US. Seem to be big in Europe. Any RC is breakable. These two take a beating. Had the original Savage and converted it to a X, now in process of updating it.. The Savage is a handful and best for experienced drivers. There Vorza was and still is a really great truck. Yes, have one. One of my favorites. Love to run it. My decision to make this video was initially based on the fact that multiple people had contacted me super excited about the new Giant HPI coming out. The reason that they thought this was that picture. They were pretty disappointed when I told him the actual size of the truck. This isnt really similar to your example. A closer analogy would be if you saw a King Kong toy with an XL King Kong portrayed as dramatically larger behind it. And bought the XL King Kong toy only to find out that it's only a little bit larger than the toy that it was compared to. I understand that not everybody would be fooled by this picture but based on the vast majority of comments I've gotten most people feel the same way about it. It is the only picture that compares this vehicle to another vehicle and it is intentionally designed to make it look larger than it is. I think when companies do something like this in our hobby it's important to call them out on it and to bring it to other people's attention. that being said you are completely entitled to your own opinion and I respect that and respect that it may not be the same as my own :-) thanks for watching anyway!

Come on man be honest with people, I mean that's what you want HPI to do right? The truck is listed as a 1/8 scale truck, so I'm not sure why anyone would think it's close to the size of a 1/6 scale such as the XMAXX. Most of the time these RC's are sent out to reviewers a month or more before they are released, surely people interested in spending this kind of cash on a RC will likely do a little research on it before buying and they would stumble across reviews of the truck where they could easily see the size in a video. HPI has been in thr RC game a long time and stand behind what they sell, anyone who cares about the RC hobby should be thankful HPI is back and part of the Hobby we love. There are a lot more RC companies that are doing much worse than a picture thay may or may. It make others think they are getting something bigger than they are. One company in particular is destroying this hobby and only cares about the money 💰💰💰💰 they can make from it and that's where those of us who love the hobby should be directing our concerns.

    Shorter chassis = easier to do flips etc. Longer chassis more of a ripper basher than a big air basher. It make sense to me, but I never take pictures as the final word anyway because it's just advertising/schmarketing. Arrma does the same exact thing because of the above reason. Some people want an air machine doing flip flops some people want a stable platform to go really fast and get some moderate air but big air doing 4 flips really isn't their thing. Not really trying to pull a fast one here it's just difference horses for different courses.

    Right but that's the problem. Because one is behind the other our brains expected to be smaller. By making them the exact same size it actually looks like the tires on the one in the back are larger. It's a perspective trick to fool our brains. Whether it's intentional or not is unknown but it is effective. Coupling that with putting it up significantly higher than the other truck and it makes it look like it's a much larger truck than it is. If they want to do an accurate comparison between the two a shot from above would be the way to do it. I was actually inspired to make this video because I had multiple people contact me excited about the new 1/5 scale Savage coming out. If you actually take measurements you can tell that they specifically sized the XL to appear larger than it is. If you put the xl behind the x and took a picture of it you would barely be able to see the xl. They adjusted the sizes to make the xl appear larger than it is. Measuring the tires of the two they are the exact same size in the picture. Because the XL is behind the x it's tires should appear significantly smaller based on perspective. Making them the exact same size the picture tricks the brain into thinking that the tires on the XL are larger. There are a lot of people that felt the same way about this so I'm definitely not alone in my opinion. Of course this stuff is always buyer beware I just think that the picture is disingenuous. This is especially true given the fact that the "massive" XL is basically the size of a 1/8 scale Kraton...

I've owned several Savages over the past 15yrs and I don't really understand all the noise over the marketing; HPI has marketed the XL's this way (nitro and flux) for over 15yrs and reading the specs will go a long way. I recall ZERO complaints when Traxxas first marketed the original 6S Xmaxx where you thought you were buying a 1:2 scale truck unless you read the specs.

You are correct that is important to read the specs but a lot of people especially new people just don't know what they're looking at. If HPI wants to succeed they need to be marketing towards new purchasers not just old HPI fans and from a new inexperienced purchasers perspective this image is fairly misleading. And I was pretty fair too because they have a image thats even worse were they put smoke under the tires to obscure the fact that it's raised up. I made the video in response to multiple people being confused by this picture. Based on the comments I got a lot of other people agree that it is a misleading picture. This one isn't even the worst. They have another one very similar but they put fake smoke underneath the tires of the XLS that you can't even tell that it's sitting above the other one. Even HPI can earn profits by manufacturing it in Japan and offering better quality for the same price. Or they can shift their OEM to the same old Taiwanese factory that made the other kits as they were also 'acceptable' but for a lower price, obviously. But this one and their other kits (Made in China) are pathetic in quality. I mean just check out the plastic parts or the anodizing or the play in the moving parts. The difference is quite huge. Taiwanese made Flux XLs were WAY better than this Chinese made Flux XL V2. If you happen to own both (Like I do), you can spot the quality differences easily. @@DoRC I didn't make this comment with the intent of defending hpi or to go against your opinion of what you see as a misleading photo. I appreciate anyone's opinion and can understand where the picture may seem misleading especially to those who don't know anything about the hobby. I'm just simply saying we are living in 2022 and pretty much anything someone wants to know about a product is a click away. Also it is a marketing strategy and anyone in the business if making money will try to make their product seem better than it is, whether it be a pizza restaurant comparing there pizza next to a competitor's pizza or even another RC company just look at pictures traxxas made of the xmaxx compares to some of there smaller RCs. I for one am just excited to see hpi possibly make a good comeback and anyone who's been in the rc hobby for several years should be to becasue we all know at one time they was the go to RC for so many people. Keep on rcing my friend and again meant no disrespect towards you or anyone else.

    It may not be immediately apparent from this video but I'm actually very excited to see HPI back as well. I purchased the Savage V2 the day it came out and I have a Maverick muscle car on pre-order. I do think that their Savage line is currently a little overpriced for what you get. I made the video and response to multiple people messaging me when the pictures first came out excited about the new x-max size savage. Yes with further research it's pretty straightforward to determine it's actual size but the picture just kind of bothered me. Anyway thanks for watching and commenting I really do hope HPI does well!

    Honest? I think videos like this are worse for the hobby than that picture. It’s a fun new release. All specs are listed. If you don’t research and just go off of an advertisement picture when buying then you really are dumb. Videos actually discussing the vehicle or driving it are great for the hobby. HPI makes some amazing RC. You just painted a picture that doesn’t reflect that, but insinuates that they look down on their consumers and are dishonest. Just my 2 cents. Far more people like complaining than being rational, so I’m sure you’ll have plenty than agree with you.

    Here's the thing. I painted a picture that reflected my feelings of the advertisement. I stand by those feelings. The advertisement is misleading. If it isnt intentionally misleading it's an awfully big coincidence that it was designed in a way that it would be basically as misleading as possible. To me the disingenuous thing would be to not make a video about these sorts of observations and only do things that are "good" for hpi and the hobby. Sometimes things occur that aren't good and that don't make a company look good. That doesn't mean they shouldn't be reported on. That doesn't mean that I don't wish HPI the best. I actually really wish them well. That being said my observations of what they've been doing so far don't really bode super well for them. Basically every "new" vehicle they've released has been overpriced and underspeced. That being said I'd absolutely do understand where you're coming from and people should do all of their own research. I just think it's also the responsibility of the companies to represent their products accurately. That picture is far from an accurate representation of the product.

    Its a Savage XL, the size hasn’t changed from the last 3 versions. Everyone who knows what a Savage XL is knows how much bigger it is. That comparison shot is the same as the last 3 web pages showing its bigger than the standard X version, its also raised on the old shots so you can see the car behind. If you want to nitpick go ahead, but it’s not even remotely controversial.

    Keep in mind that that's coming from the viewpoint of someone that's very familiar with these. Someone who isn't familiar with these isn't going to know the long history of the vehicles and will really only be going off of what they see in the pictures. For those people this picture is pretty deceiving. The XL looks like an xmaxx sitting behind the x. That being said people are free to draw their own conclusions. My goal was to point it out so that people could be aware of it and not get the wrong impression about the xl.

  • @AsraiForns

    How is a person not familiar with a Savage XL but that same person then be able to compare it and be familiar with an Xmaxx in size? That person has to have RC knowledge like yourself or you wouldn't be comparing it to the Xmaxx in the first place. It's not being compared to an Xmaxx. It's being shown against an X. I don't think the dimensions are right because the XL has axle extenders so will 100% be wider than the X. So it's wider and longer than an X.

  • @DoRC

    @DoRC

    I was saying looks like it is xMax size in the picture. Somebody doesn't know what they're looking at will just think it's huge compared to the Savage x. I have heard that it has extenders but based on both the specifications and pictures on hpi's own website it doesn't so that's what I based my video off of. It's possible that's a typo and that the image is incorrect but I just went off of what was there.
