Can you print with just black ink

I replaced my ink cartridges with HP brand , and it doesn't recognize them. Tried 3 times...restarting printer, used hp smart 3rd time and says it's busy, can't perform that function. I cleaned the contacts if cartridges and carrier per HP help instructions and still no different. I even have Cartrige protection off.
