What made Your Name appealing to me, is mostly how the music helped greatly in telling the story. Every scenario has a musical accompaniment that fit perfectly. Coupled with amazing visuals, it is easy for me to forgive its most basic plot holes. So much so that I was willing to make my own explanations as to why these characters never even bothered to ask basic questions during the time their bodies swapped.

Easy answer for me: The soundtrack. RADWIMPS absolutely knocked it out of the park. All of the most powerful moments of the film were accompanied by an equally powerful piece of music, which honestly, makes all the difference. It's that amplification of the moment that ingrains it into your emotions and nostalgia. I will forget the details of this movie, I won't forget how it made me FEEL. The fact that I can tap into that feeling instantly by listening to a piece of music is the best part. That's what captured me.

It makes me so sad nobody talks about the scene that absolutely broke me. I wrote a lot about it when I first saw the film, which was more than 9 months ago and perhaps fittingly I forgot a lot of the fine details that would evoke emotional response in other viewers. In the third act everything is so hectic which gives a whiff of all these different ideas and genres, and saying it's unfinished or unwarranted is a fair assessment. However there is that sliver of peace and quiet at the top of the volcano where Mitsuha and Taki finally meet. Not only is that scene so warm and comforting itself, but the moment their pen drops I felt the whole world stopped for a second. And we're straight back into this downward spiral of chaos as Mitsuha runs to her village which gives the ensuing downfall such a real, kinetic feel. Especially when she trips and falls, her rolling over takes all the momentum out of that truly exhilarating scene. And at the moment she looks at her hand you realise that nobody can save Itomori anymore, but an even bigger predicament is that she can't remember Taki's name only because at that safe haven only minutes ago at the top of the volcano they allowed themselves to be silly children madly in love and he wrote that he loved her. So even though you feel Itomori and all these people you grew to care for are doomed, as stupid as it is, none of that matters as much as Mitsuha's seething feelings for Taki. Honestly, that all happens in a couple of minutes, and I forgot a lot of the details, but I simply cannot forget what a dynamic artistic phrase those two scenes of opposing fates enclose. Surprisingly, the film goes on for a long time after that from what I remember, and I just felt like none of that mattered anymore. I felt empty and wasn't truly following anymore, and picked up on important plot-points and the true weight of the final scene only in my second viewing. It's not a perfect film and there is no point really in expecting or claiming that, but it perfectly talked to me and I will never forget it for it.

I adored the film personally. Of course it has flaws, no piece of media can come out unscathed, but there is certainly something to be said about how well it captivates and engrosses you in a pretty gorgeous love story. They execute on montage absurdly well through the entirety, and the ending, man, my heart was Goin crazyyyyyy with the buildup.

The romance is pretty trash in this movie though. Most of the romantic build-up is done through a montage, and while it's a good montage, it's mostly there to show time has passed, and it doesn't effectively build up the romance itself. Taki just kind of loves her after it. Also, if you want a film that uses montages well, Wolf Children beats out Your Name so badly. There are like 3 more montages in that film than in Your Name, and they all are far superior to the ones in Your Name.

he literally said he could have done better, unlike other movie makers that are shameless and claim movie is a work of art. Movie was good, but its all more frustrating when we the audience who have an above average understanding of story, cinema, animation etc to see something that could have been so much better. Though the ending was SO like 5 cm, at least it had a different end end at least T________T if the director really wants, would it be cool to see a part two, expanding ideas on life relationships, even with these "soul mates" , love at first sight stuff, honey moon stage, one a bit more grounded down to earth.

AnimeEveryday Re: Critics' problems with the story tl;dr --> Americans, even anime watchers, lack Japanese cultural capital, so they are automatically less able to understand and appreciate the story, thus concluding it as a "mess." See the Kumihimo Theory by Anime Life Lessons for an 11 minute long but excellent explanation. kzread.info/dash/bejne/oqN209Rmg8jeYZs.html Unfortunately, many critics don't understand that cultural differences impact their understanding of the film. Cultural exchange should not just occur over imagery...with established and/or trope plotlines, but it should occur over structure as well. I'd argue that Your Name was brilliant because it pushed the boundaries of storytelling by proudly infusing Japanese culture into its very plot structure. The result is unique and breathless. See the Kumihimo Theory by Anime Life Lessons for a long but excellent explanation. It made me appreciate the film much more. kzread.info/dash/bejne/oqN209Rmg8jeYZs.html Films should challenge its viewers, not cater to the lowest denomination. The best films require rewatches to fully appreciate their nuances and complexity (especially with such a visually stunning, aka distracting, film such as this). Shinkai admitted that the end result was rushed and imperfect because they did not have enough time, which what happens with blockbusters, but the spirit was there, and there were plenty of hints throughout the movie that heavily implied what was going on. Cultural exchange is not always simple. Challenge yourself and go in for a rewatch, especially if you are a Western viewer who is not clued into Japanese mythology, religion, and the like.

I had no idea people were hating on this film! I went in completely blind with a group of 8 people and we were all blown away. The timing of the music, the art and the big time twist just made it my favorite anime film in recent years (the last two I'd watched were Arrietty and Kaguyahime which completely let me down). This is also coming from someone who loves romance, so I'm the target audience for this type of story... but I feel the charm holds up for the rushed feeling of the ending. It simply built up my anticipation of how it was going to end. And for those who wanted an unhappy ending, I feel like this is one of those 'damned if you do/damned if you dont' kind of scenario. I do love tragic endings to romance but in this instance if all the build up to them meeting ended up falling flat it would have felt like the most drawn out c0ck block of a romance... As for the plots with Mitsuha's father/traditions you brought up in the beginning, I believe they served its purpose. If you have seen the anime KADO, then you will understand one of the points I'm getting at. How I saw it, the plot points that 'became throwaways' not only added some depth to Mitsuha's life, but 1) set the premise of her turbulent relationship with the father that does become a forefront later in the story and 2) the traditions help segue into the metaphors and symbolism that becomes central to the story. I.e. the threads they make tie into the conversation grandma makes on their hike, and the 'red string of fate' that tie Mitsuha and Tako to each other. When a film such as this makes references to Japan's spiritual culture, it would make these references feel shallow if we barely showed any of it when they are the basis for key points of the story. These 'throwaways' also made the twist have an even bigger impact by leading you into this false sense of 'oh ok, so this going to be another gender-bender anime'. KADO does this exceptionally well in the first ep.

galaxysushi the characters where flat and undeveloped, and the romance felt unrealistic to me, they literally never spoke to each other not really understood each other as shown by their actions. Also every problem and solution can be described as "because magic". They swap because magic, they forget about each others because magic, he time travels because magic, they are in love because destiny and magic.

  • @UnforsakenUmeko

    @UnforsakenUmeko

Ok... so you attribute every problem in the film to have been caused by magic? Was the disconnect Mitsuha had with her father a problem created my magic? Was Tako's inability to get close to his crush created by magic? The major point in the film, the meteor, wasnt even caused by magic! Yes the gender bending/time travel was caused by magic, but magic only facilitated the solutions to the problems in Mitsuha and to a smaller degree, Tako's life. You cant say magic alone solved every problem, because Mitsuha and Tako weren't passively letting magic do all the work; they were being active in their own ways. Now forgetting each other could easily have been for the sake of suspense, but I digress. As for you finding them flat and undeveloped... All you have to do is observe what their life was like before and after they started body switching to see how much each of them were growing and developing thanks to the influence of one another. You say the romance was unrealistic, but I would argue that plenty of people have developed feelings for people before having met. The internet is a wonderful thing, and txting to each other is similar in my mind to chatting to someone on social media or an mmo. I met my fiance on Ragnarok Online and we dated for 3 years before we met in person. The film does at least attempt to show the passage of time when they were a part of each other's lives (which could have been better imo). As for not understanding one another, you could say that about literally ANY relationship between two teenagers! You dont have to completely understand one another to develop feelings for that person...

Mitsuha daddy issues and Tako's crush resolved with an unsatisfying *plaff*, they werent even that important, specially de daddy issues conclusion was really unsatisfying, and c'mon Tako you had the hot oneechan right there in a silver plate. The meteor wasnt even mentioned until the end and was for all intents and purposes a magic device that generates conflict out of nowhere. I cannot tell you almost anything about neither Mitsuha or Tako besides Tako being boyish, hard working and extrovert and Mitsu being girly, wanting to go to the city and feeling pressured by tradition, hardly any notable traits. The changes in their lives were not development because they didnt change their lives, each one acted diferently on each other body. So tako made advancements on his crush... when he wasnt Tako, and mitsu became popular when she wasnt her, that isnt character development, they just woke to see things already changed. In the end, the movie for me was just a pretty waste of time, even the director was like "wtf dudes, calm down it isnt that big of a deal"

  • @SirRichard94

    @SirRichard94

    6 жыл бұрын

    1) Her daddy issues werent important, you could remove them and wouldnt affect much, just were mentioned on the begining, and then at the literal end when she confronted him. Could have been developed much more. 2) Yeah it was superficial, and it didnt work because as I said it wasnt his development that lead to her liking him it was Mitsu the one that she was fond of. What even is the point to make someone else make progress in your life, It could have been an interesting topic if the film went there. 3) The fact that a meteor shower is mentioned here and there is forshadowing but it is still an asspull. It is for the sake of "plot twist" but that doesnt mean "suddenly everyone dies" isnt an asspull. As I'll repeat further down conflict should emerge from themselves, not the sky. 4) Whatever makes a character interesting and not a generic slab. Mitsu is probably the better one. Ill make an example with the other hyped movie: Ueno from Silent voice, not even main character but still she is a girl that has strong emotions of love and envy, its easy to hate her for bullying the deaf girl but you can see that she genuenly protects and cares for those she likes, like Yasho, Her family in one shot and her friend (that she also bullied before). There is an complex value system at work and conflicting traits that make her *interesting* if not likeable. Shes loving, hard working, but selfish and of extreme emotional fits. Its almost as shes a real person with contradicting values and she knows and suffers from it. And she isnt even the MC. In contrast practically no problem ever stems form this characters, as I said, all conflict was artificially introduced by magic, never by their traits or flaws. 6?) their actions in each otherbodies could be the most interesting part of the film but it was a montage! this genuenly makes me mad, they traded the premise of the film for a shock value plot twist. There could be problems, missunderstandings, unforseen actions that fucked up something in each other lives, much potential such loss. See the girl who lept through time to see mundane problems escalate for supernatural magic, It is great, her selfishness is ultimateley the source of her troubles, not a goddam meteorite. 7) I wont discuss on this one, Miyazaki is a high bar to be compared to, but ultimately he doesnt want the hype to escalate as it will only hurt further works. I make you this question, ** what is the theme of the movie? ** if its starcrossed lovers well, its not that good of a theme and they didnt explore their dynamic fully as they skipped it over a montage and only talked once. For it to be a tragic tale of love, the downfall must be because of character flaws not because goddam meteorites. If its "the feeling of knowing someone that you never met before" as i've heard sometimes, thats vage as fuck and It does'nt really work, they did met and forgot but that feeling was only a minute segment at the end, that in my opinion was the weakest part of the movie. I was like "god please, stop the (magical artificial) dramma and end this already"

The back-third complaints seem so off to me, because I don't feel like there was ANYthing missing. I mean, possibly the pace shifting from Taki-as-Mitsuha's makeshift plans, the crater meeting, exploding things, convincing evacuations and rollbacks and timing... that can be pretty oddly-paced, and of course the end-end is very slow. But otherwise, Mitsuha's father? Really needed no resolution. She forced him to see her way, and we know it, because the town WAS evacuation-drilled. And he obviously would have immediately reevaluated his relationship with her and the family at that point. What were we going to see? Her visiting him and having a merry chat with him back at the shrine? She saved everyone, and he almost killed them. That would obviously end any of his frustrations with the family "legacy," as it were. Mitsuha resolved it herself. And the very end? All we needed to know is THAT THEY WOULD MEET. Perhaps because this is Shinkai and my brain is throwing out 5cm comparisons, but in that entire "keep missing each other" part of the ending, all I'm doing is mentally yelling "GODDAMMIT SHINKAI FOR ONCE IN YOUR MISERABLE LIFE GIVE US A HAPPY ENDING" They meet. Instant glee. 😝 What more do you really need? We have witnessed a time-altering life-saving backstory to a "love at first sight" meeting. We know it'll stick. I'm sure some would have been happy with Tsuki ga Kirei "peeking into the futures," but it really wasn't needed. The red string snapped taut, connecting them both in place. We're good. 👍🏻

I like the ending too. I do realise that people who lack imagination or are lazy to use their imagination would find the ending lacking. They want to be spoon fed by the storyteller every single minute of the story. They don't trust themselves to imagine to a "what could have been" scenario. Did you realise that every scene that he had an issue with are the ones where the storyteller "left" for the viewer to interpret themselves.

I think the reason why Your Name got as popular as it did is that it has a lot more mainstream appeal than Shinkai's other works. Shinkai films are undeniably beautiful, but the stories aren't as optimistic or exciting as a lot of other films, and this keeps it from having mainstream appeal. 5cm per Second in particular while still rather popular, doesn't have a kind of definitive happy ending that general audiences are looking for. It also doesn't have any big plot details to excite the audience, and it doesn't have a plotpoint with a hook like Your Name does. Your Name on the other hand has all these things. Your Name has a big plot twist and it has an initial plotpoint (body-switching) that people are able to immediately grasp. It has the whole comet thing to keep the movie exciting as well near the end. It also has a romance that has a happy ending. This coupled with the fantastic art that Shinkai is known for set Your Name up for mainstream success. It's clearly a much more grand and ambitious film than his other works and this caught the attention of audiences. However, due to the movie's ambition, that left a lot of room for flaws to sink in, which I personally found to hurt the quality of the movie, even if it doesn't diminish it's popularity.

For me I think Makoto Shinkai created lightning in a bottle. It is the imperfections and the odd way of storytelling against what AnimeEveryday think Makoto Shinkai should have done. It shouldn't have worked but it did perfectly and with unexpected results! That is what I think troubles Makoto Shinkai, the unexpected results that the accolades kept coming and defining it as a monumental movie. It's a movie that cannot be replicated by Makoto Shinkai because this is not a movie that he wish it to be or envisioned it to be. For him it's a flawed movie and for many it was epic. How do Makoto Shinkai create a movie that can outdo an incomplete product beloved by many? What if the audience expected more flawed movie in the future or worst, a better flawed movie?

Sorry man, I don't really follow your explanations. To me and to those I've watched it with, it works because it's like a very long music video with on-point music and perfect animation that helps the visual story telling and characterizations. The pacing was never an issue, and I was never bored for a moment while watching the movie. Although that may just be me. I mean I'm the type who is patient enough to get excited over Serial Experiments Lain's style of story telling. And that anime tend to bore out other people. That and Jin-Roh, GITS, and etc. Furthermore, I instinctively felt the kind of "longing" that the movie is trying to convey in its changing pacing. The slow start is in parallel to the Mitsuha's boredom. The sudden change into a fast pace coupled with time lapses and fast music portrays panic and chaos at the sudden plot twist, then it slows down and speeds up again depending on the mood the movie is trying to convey. It's all part of the story telling to me.

I agree on most things, Captain Midnight. I was hardly ever bored especially because every scene was so beautiful. Particularly in the first act, scenes from the town of Itori gripped me like it gripped Taki. I must say the animators also did a fantastic work to keep viewers immersed in the movie. Tiny details like a hammer head impact on wood were just perfection 👌 Also, the ending did probably feel a bit rushed ( I don't know what the director would have come up with more budget and time) but that made it all the more exciting! That feeling of longing, something missing, or searching for something in the third act was like movie acknowledged how many viewers might feel in their own lives. That was kind of special to me.

I liked the pacing of the movie throughout. The slow intro leads well into the chaos that ensues. The more rushed ending helped a bit, too, since this movie does such a brilliant job at making your heart hurt. My biggest issue with pacing was that they didn't allow enough time for the chaos of the saving of the town, where we got very little. The ending hurt, since too much was said, diminishing some of the effects of the meeting. That ending was probably one of the best endings, despite the way it feels. I thought that final cut was absolutely wonderful. Great video, this was well thought out, and I like it.

I've been watching your videos for a while now and I still think your narration, detailed reviews and opinions make for great viewing. Watching anime which is innately foreign in nature, is made to seem very natural when presented and discussed in a familiar Scottish accent. This film has been on my to-watch list for a while now so although I'm disappointed I didn't get to see it in a cinema setting (and admittedly, I probably should have watched it before watching this video), this has definitely made me even more keen to watch the film. Great video

Being the first anime movie, I watched, it captivated me becuz of the subtlety of its supernatural elements, its convincing relationships and its scale. 5 centimeters per second showed us how time and distance can destroy relationships, while Your name showed us that time and distance can actually bring ppl together. I have to say without a doubt the second plot twist was what kept captured and what drew me in were the characters and their new found love for one another before the devastation of the comet. Even though I loved it, the ending left much to be desired but I can't wait to see what Makoto Shinkai's next project is.

I watched your name on a 360p resolution with what appears to be korean subs along the eng subs and constant watermarks telling me to not pirate the movie... Until now there hasn't been a theatrical release in my vicinity. Thus the visuals alone couldn't carry this film for me. But still I was heavily invested into your names story as it progressed . Those imperfections you named are really just adding up to my personal opinion that this is my favorite non ghibli movie. But why is that as you correctly explained that the movie just needed this little bit more time here and there? For me the segment before the meteor crashes into the town these ten minutes aren't breaking my investment or immersion into the story at all. I was pretty hyped to see them trying to get sth done about the impact. So when the meteor inevitably crashed into the lake a part of my hearth felt crushed beneath this explosion. I really wanted the 2 of them to meet and expected to see them succeed. After the meteor scene Taki wakes up alone when I remember correctly and repeats his phrase from the movie intro. About forgetting sth important. This just shattered my heart even more so I was genuinely happy to realize that all of this was a flashback to what happened between the 2 of them when they finally see each other RL in the trains. These 10 seconds or so of being united was enough to make me cry. This is how invested I was by the end of Your name. All those imperfections just add up to the emotional part of your name, or at least how I see the emotional part and also felt it. Taki and Mitzuha don't have any time to spent together when they see each other the first time on the mountain they barly have time to write down their names. So this fast pasting near the end of the last act just didn't hurt the overall story in my eyes. This movie just ended up being perfect for me.

What made your name so amazing to me no matter how many times i've watched it is it's narrative of how our world and our mind is only limited yet love and connection is unbound to that, that old narrative "Even if the mind forgets the Heart remembers always" it's that perfect blend of subtlety and upfrontiveness in it's storytelling, the way we were told the story captured our hearts as this movie isn't really anything conventional by any sense, The animation is too detailed in contrast to other anime which often just glosses over background animation, it's Use of Media Pos or beginning in the middle and going back to the beginning to explain and give narrative to the end effectively hyping the build up to the end, it filled us all with emotion and anxiousness that gets released when they finally ask "What's Your name?", this unconventional approach puts us all out of our comfort zone with what the common narrative is and gave us something more beautiful than what we could ever expect, if Mokoto Shinkai believes this movie is incomplete.. then if he does completr it.. i feel we would be in for a treat, for this movie is timeless and beautiful in any context whether it may be in how it presents itself or how we the audience interpret it to be. That's all i have to say for now...

10:03 Even the director said he felt the movie was incomplete - It clearly suffered from cuts to several parts in order to fit its presented length. However, there's a light novel / Manga (Second-hand information) explaining Mitsuha´s father and mother and why the mayor was so moved when he saw his daughter's OWN eyes, inside. According to people, the comet coming back is a recurring event and Mitsuha´s lineage received this "Power" in order to preserve what is lost every time the comet strikes that exact same location - So, as Mitsuha and Taki saved each other and the people of the town, they actually also laid Mitsuha mother´s spirit to rest with her own shrine maiden´s duty finally fulfilled.

It is quite misjudged if one considers Your Name's narrative speed to be bad just because of what seems to be an inconsistent narrative pacing at first glance when looking at it in segments, as when you look at its overall structure as a whole, one could see that Your Name has an order through which its chaos is organized. It alternates between slow build up through subtle cues and hints mixed with long structural exposition and fast montages that culminates the build up only for its pace to once again to return to a slower more subtle pace. It alternates between these two paces in a cycle, repeating for several times throughout the film. This cyclical accelerating and decelerating narrative pacing is quite fitting for a story that tackles the intertwining nature of the flow of time itself. I understand that Your Name is indeed a radically different Makoto Shinkai film. It possesses a lot of overdone tropes and cliches prevalent in many modern anime and other modern media and that it doesn't have Shinkai's trademark contemplative aggrandizing of reality and the mundane passage of time present throughout his films that I appreciate the most such as "Five Centimeters per Second" or "Garden of Words", but Your Name is a film that doesn't aim to break cliche nor aggrandize reality, but rather, it aims to create a film that uses common tropes and cliches to the point of near mastery that what was overdone and trite in the past seem like they are fresh in the present once again, and it also presents a reality and that is grand in ways beyond the scale of reality itself -- yet still set in the everyday mundane.

An ending doesn't have to spell it all out for you in order to make you happy. The ending of Your Name, as incomplete as its cuts and lack of production time might have made it, still hits your brain and your heart hard enough to make you devise your own conclusions to what is missing, and comparing those to other users, finding out so many more people also related to this feeling, can be a lot more awesome than an extended ending showing a lot of spit swapping, wedding bells ringing, children, and being happy forever and after. 2 cents sent.

i agree with what you said ...but also the weird pacing kinda reflects life in a realistic way for me personally it moved me like nothing else before... not because it was a roller coaster of tragedy and romance but because it was a piece of art on many levels that managed to reflect the essence of the positive parts of the human experience for me ... reminding me of my errors and bad habits which i forget while also reminding me of the beauty of life regardless of how strange a time i'm going through ...and the movie did that through showing the aspects of: perspective in regards to human concepts like beauty , through showing polarity and duality , and showing that memories have to be upheld over time, as well as showing most aspects of growing up in a generalized modern but applicable way, also touching on the flow of time and how it can change for us, and especially through showing the importance of pursuit of something (probably even more stuff ... wheter intended or interpreted doesnt matter) ...through doing all that naturally and seamlessly while capturing my attention and entertaining me with an interesting story it made me release emotionally ... i was sad and cried ... while also smiling because i remembered to search for whatever awaits me if i dont waste my life like jordan peterson warns me from dont care about a rating it was just fitting for me personally at this moment

for me a lot of it was the layers of meaning I mean they were so pressed for time in the production of this your name as a watch is one in which you can go into and try to focus on what parts of the movie you thought were relevant for you while letting go of some of the less relevant plot points proceeding further in only to realize what initially appeared like it didn't matter was foreshadowing for what was coming later on. The story's elements themselves are woven togethe much like the thread so if you do go back and watch it again with benefit of experience you'd end up realizing what there was so much happening that you were not paying that much attention to the first time you watched it even though it hit you pretty hard emotionally by the end. Even some of more minor details end up being major foreshadowing.

Tl;Dr - I can tell when something's "off" or "missing" because I've started daydreaming or drifting off somewhere else I don't watch films with a critical perspective or analyse every square inch of them as I'm watching them - that comes post-movie - because it breaks the immersion and experience of seeing a movie and silently creating memories that may - or may not - last a lifetime... But there're moments throughout a film where I feel like something's missing (but can't tell what...), that fade as the film progresses, only to be replaced by more, or to resurface later on and break that fabled experience of immersion and investment. All of these "moments", following the movie, leave a sort of impression where I'm thinking about the film and about the bigger implications and abstractions/deeper meanings of what I've witnessed. Your name really played on this, especially the ending - like it was so sudden and felt incomplete, while the word and concept of Musubi kept coming back to me (lasting impression!), and this was before learning about Shinkai's kind of lament on how it was unfinished, two years wasn't enough, etc. It's an amazing film, playing with some very technical parts and pieces and is clearly thought through - to the point where time constraints forbid the whole experience - but that ending was just so anticlimactic! Excuse the long rambling post, just got this urge for detail! 🙏

First off, big fan, great job with the video. I'm not sure if this video was intentionally made to be as meta as it is with regard to your major gripe about the movie but I think its interesting nonetheless. You have a 13 minute long video titled "How Your Name Captured The Anime Community" wherein you spend 4 minutes with a slow analysis of the beginning of the film with a couple subjective additices, then move on to a slightly faster paced analysis of the following 2 acts leading up to the 12 minute mark where you finally give your answer to the title of your video. A valid point and a huge piece of the puzzle but sort of under explored. A sort of mirror to your summation of the subject movie's pacing and greatest flaw. Again, not a criticism, just an ironic observation. Love the videos! Thanks for reading.

I do not fully agree about the lack of voice overs for guiding the viewers on what's happening and wasted time on the subtleties in the film. To me it was just really perfect as it is but that's just me. It's probably because I kinda get the hints, having too much fascination with alternate reality and multiverse theories(especially having watched the matrix movies and the mandela effect movie prior seeing this anime) everything just adds up perfectly from my view. I guess I just so happen to be too "prepared" when I watched this anime and that's why the impact was full blast despite having watched it just once. This was a very entertaining video nonetheless! Always nice to step into someone else's perspective every now and then. Kudos!

I think what was so amazing about Your Name is how it captured not just the Anime community, but basically everyone who saw it. How much the plot or characters hold up to close analysis is irrelevant, because it is one of if not the best overall presentations I have seen in film. When I think about Your Name, I remember feelings and wonder more than specific scenes. I watched Your Name on a day when I had nothing better to do, and it became one of the best uses of my time ever. You do some good analysis of a lot of what makes the film work, but you may be underestimating the extent to which what you see as "flaws" (I don't, at least not as much) actually *add* to its appeal. Sort of like the way a little bit of fat can add flavor to a steak or imperfections in a diamond make them more unique. For instance, I liked the way Mitsuha's relationship with her father came to a head. That whole plot thread was something important to her character rather than a dedicated subplot in the movie, but in any case, it still "resolved" excellently. Seeing him admit to his mistakes and grow into a warmer, more present parent would be far less evocative than having him be visibly taken aback by a newfound resolve he can immediately sense and realize he will have to come to respect her as a young woman-- one crucial moment, punctuated by a comet blast. The epilogue of the movie seems very deliberate to me, letting the air out of our previous plot threads in a pointedly unhurried way knowing full well the audience is desperate to find out all the answers. It also fits in well with the sense of Taki forgetting the significance of everything that was so gravely important to him. This only helps to build the suspense of whether or not the two protagonists are going to actually reunite, making us practically yell at the screen for them to remember each other. When their eventual meeting does indeed only last about ten seconds, how long would you want it to last? A minute? Five? Did you want them to have a longer conversation? Fully regain their memories? Kiss? Instead, there are any number of possibilities for them, but the important thing is that they have reunited. The dramatic tension is fully relieved and the film ends seconds after, with the audience riding an emotional high as the credits roll. It's true that not everything is tidily explained either from a logical perspective (I would call the movie's approach to justifying its high-concept as "magical realism" rather than just useful vagueness) or a narrative one, but again, I think that helps, and explains some of the film's appeal. Give the audience what they want but leave them wanting just enough that they'll want to come back and relish the movie's incomplete beauty. In this age the most consistently world-beating blockbusters are the MCU movies (which I generally do very much like), which for all their playfulness and experimentation DO tend to adhere rather strictly to by-the-book Storytelling 101 rules: Plot Threads A-B-C are resolved at Moments X-Y-Z, characters speak in crisp & clever sentences which illuminate their motivations, every Chekov's Gun eventually gets fired, and every sequel hook is clearly signposted. These things are all well & good but it does leave room for an itch that can only be scratched by something more intriguingly flawed and different. Something like a gorgeously mounted, magically realist romantic comedy drama that's oddly paced, evocatively emotional, and willing to temporarily frustrate. Finally, I know Shinkai has himself criticized the movie, and I would take that as less of proof that there is something "wrong" with it and more as an artistic idiosyncrasy. He'd be far from the first artist to look at a creation of his that everyone else adores and focus flaws & compromises he made along the way. He sees what it isn't, not what it is.

In the treatment of literature, the story used a lot of literary devices unique to epic dramas and mythology writing--switched up for a more contemporary feel. The ending of the story is the same theme of the movie--yearning. It makes the audience fill in a void they cannot recognize, the same journey which Mitsuha and Taki took throughout the storyline, and yet move on with their lives knowing that there is definite positive ending; this is more of a romantic stylistic device than a purposive story closure. Thanks to that ending, viewers find it more life-like to see that our own lives are like open-ended orientation of realities we choose to hope and believe in-- it's up to us to put a period at the end when come full circle, just like the end scene bearing the title name "your name" with a period.

personally I liked the ending. This is because we know the type of people that the main characters are, and the feelings they had. So when they saw each other there is an implicit end to the story. I dont think showing them go on a date, or hang out, or catch up, would have made the movie that much better.

I think I loved (and still love) Your Name because it was such a standout compared to anything else. From my couple anime-obsessed friends, I heard "It was pretty good" My experience, going to see it by myself on a boring afternoon, was complete awe. This was the first film I'd seen in years that felt like it was something new and different. From the absolutely beautiful art that demands you see it in a theatre, to the emotional whiplash that was actually done well instead of feeling like cheap manipulation, this movie far surpassed any expectations I had going in to it. it's something special, and more importantly, something that's still accessible to most people. You don't have to know every facet of Japanese culture to understand the movie, most things that are important are explained within. This is important, because anyone, not just huge anime fans, can fall in love with this movie. I went to see it two more times in theatres, each time bringing new people with me. I hyped this to anyone who would listen because it's truly a gem that they would have never heard of otherwise. I bought it on DVD specifically to lend it to other people so they can watch it. It may not be a perfect film, but it's pretty darn close. Also, I think the dub is very good. I know not everyone will agree, but I think it really adds to having even more people enjoy it, and it's just more enjoyable as a viewer to not have to read subtitles while there's other action happening onscreen, or just beautiful scenery, which happens a lot in this movie. Obviously being fluent in Japanese can't be replaced, and there's a lot of extra details, from school chalkboards to signs to news reports, that there's just no way to convey to a first-time viewer, even with subtitles. But the music is the biggest highlight, with the redubbed (by the same artist) songs adding memorable lyrics to an already superb soundtrack. I just don't remember songs in other languages in one listen, but Sparkle in English is extremely good. Also, Zen Zen Zense added extra lyrics to the bridge in English, although that part of the song isn't in the movie anyway. Anyway, I really really liked this movie.

Oh sweet! I just watched this today! I felt like they could've dragged out them interacting with one another through their "dreams" a little more. Though perhaps I'm thinking more from a series point of view than from a movie one.

Overall I say it's the soundtrack that caused people gravitated towards this film. Music can really bring out the emotions from the inside.

Kind of wish I'd seen it as a kid instead of a jaded adult. Beautiful animation and good music. Agreed on the ending. It was a little too fast but I can accept it. Second time I watched it was online and I agree that the theatre is definitely the way to watch it. Something with such amazing visuals and soundtrack needs to be on a big screen in high definition with professional speakers etc. My crumby old laptop just won't do.

I feel like some people underestimate the value and importance of "style". Like it has no inherent value and the only thing important is the plot and writing. The art design, animation, music, and in general, the style of this movie is awe-inspiring, and it helps driving home some of the points of the movie. That's an achievement by itself, years of hard-work by everyone working on it. So to just dismiss this movie by saying "it's just pretty visuals" sounds like saying that that doesn't hold any meaning or value. It's not one of my favorite movies, not even from last year. I have other anime movies that I think present more interesting themes, better characters, or just interested me more. But it still was a hell of an experience to watch it in the theaters. And that has value by itself, and that's why I agree with this video. That's probably part of the reason it was a hit.

I think that it was an easy (plot-wise) yet visually stunning film to watch, which is why in my opinion it became what it is now. I personally really liked it (not considering the plot holes and absurdity of it all, which......) but I wish they had done the characters more justice. When I came out of the cinema both times i went to see it, I felt like I had watched two characters in a blockbuster 100 min movie, but definitely not over the months/years the story happened in, so it wasn't really "enough" to feel connected to them. Like you said, they could've given more time to things that created more depth and personality instead of rushing it. It still had lots of precious moments though, just not enough for me to completely love it.

personally, im fine with all the things you complained about. i find the pacing interesting, and i dont see the "wasted time" as a problem at all- i feel like the unnecessary explanations and change in narration style really help me experience the movie as the characters rather than as the audience. i also feel like mitsuhas relationship with her father and the ending of the movie feeling unfinished is fine, i like stories with a somewhat open ending and unfinished parts for some reason, like the miraculous journey of edward tulane. i don't have a problem with your video at all, i appreciate the effort put into this video, but i just wanted to put my opinion out there.

I just recently watched Your Name. I must say you didn't exactly convince me of its flaws. At least none of them seem serious enough for it to drop it below an 8/10 or 9/10 score. Though I must admit I'm generally more kind towards movies since they don't make a habit of overstaying their welcome.

I'm personally of the opinion that people who "aren't getting" this movie, or "aren't connecting" with it are just ice cold individuals who are jaded. Or they have never had their heart broken. Either way, you guys are emotionally impaired and I feel bad for you if you aren't moved by this movie
