When watching this, I was thinking of my previous surgeries, and it nailed exactly what I experienced whether good or scary. By you putting these video’s out there, you are helping so many. I wish there were more Drs/anesthesiologist like you.

This explains so much! I had a horrible experience and my anesthesiologist was actually the main cause of my anxiety. I was very ill at the time I needed a broken ankle repair. She went off; in turn, on me and then, my family about my condition. When I was pleading her stop and they gave me drugs to calm me before going into the OR. I fell asleep. When I woke after surgery (although I have no memory of it) I was told I was thrashing and crying/wailing uncontrollably.

@@MedicalSecrets Thank you for the confirmation I had suspected and your kind words. I am much better. I admit, I was emotional when posting my prior response due to the impact of the video. I should add, my anesthesiologist was honest in the opinions and medical advice she delivered that day. I believe the timing and, perhaps, the method of delivery was a bit off. I am grateful that she was alarmed enough to alert my family to the direness of my condition. I am much improved. 😊

I’ve had a number of surgeries, over 70 since 2003, and find that my depression worsens after every surgery for a period of time, then we tweak my meds a bit and it improves, but then I need another surgery and it’s like a rollercoaster. Hoping to hop off the ride soon! Next surgery is 6/26 for my VP shunt revision. Hoping I don’t dip down into depression too bad this time.

I have had yet another spinal surgery. Your videos have helped give me confidence in my operative progress. I have used your calming breathing techniques. It has helped to know that I can ask for a bit of Versed prior to the beginning of the surgery. I have been relaxed and felt safe after surgery. Less nausea too!

Yes. They should provide Versed to every single patient prior to surgery.

I'm looking at needing a back surgery soon and get huge waves of "what if" anxiety. I learned when I had my wisdom teeth removed that I do best with as much info as I can get, so I know what to expect. So I found your videos. You remind me of the nurse I had when going into twilight sleep for my teeth. I told her I am autistic and scared, and she calmly talked me through everything, down to explaining where people were standing in the room when I couldn't see. When I woke up, I wouldn't speak English and just kept signing, "thank flower woman." Health professionals like y'all make things so much less scary.

@@MedicalSecrets Thank you. I did end up getting the surgery yesterday. It's very strange to not have pain anymore, I'd gotten used to it after 3 months. Everyone who worked on me was very nice, and having all the information I had collected helped me stay calm dispite my medical trauma. I remember just before I fell asleep, I locked eyes with someone and told them, "You'll be ok. They'll take care of you." Lmao

I learned something new today. Enjoyed the info.

I have cPTSD and dissociative disorders and I had a hysterectomy last week. So far I'm ok with it even though I'm only 30 and would love to be a mom. Anesthesiologists suggested an epidural because I get very nauseous and vomit a lot when taking opioids which was a huge problem after my last endometriosis surgery. The epidural was great after surgery because there was very little pain and no nausea or sedation at all but when they did it, I had a huge trauma reaction and they were a little stressed because my vital signs were critical at times. Sadly the anesthesiologist who did it wasn't the best match interpersonally, I would have loved the one who was in the waking up room to be there with me when it was done. She was one of the nicest, warmest and most reassuring people I've met so far. I started to cry because of how caring she was and how safe she made me feel and she was very happy when I told her.

I’ve always had great anesthesiologist. I had one a few years ago when my back Dr was going to burn the nerves in my back. He introduced himself and said hi! I’m Bob. I said ohhhh no! Lol. That’s was my ex’s name. You will be George while I’m in here. He laughed said got it!! Dr walked in and started to say well we ready Bob, before he got Bob out. He stopped him! While Miss Diana is in here I’m George. He laughed said ok!! She is the patient and we are here for her!! So if she said you’re George. Then George are we ready? Then the Dr said what kind of music you like Miss Diana? I said the greatest ever Bob Seger!! He said awesome. I love him. Good old time rock N Roll. They put on a Bob Seger song and he said sweet dreams Miss Diana. 🥰. I love my Dr and anesthesiologist!!

In early 2021 I was going through a very difficult time… I won’t bombard you with all of the unnecessary details, but it included a stalker, theft, assault, multiple betrayals, worries for my daughter, and more… I reached out to psychiatry for help… in spite of mood stabilizers, anti anxiety medication, and therapy, a couple months after starting this regimen I had a stress induced heart attack… SCAD in my LAD in July 2021… I got very lucky… not everyone with SCAD is as lucky.

I had a 2nd outpatient shoulder surgery in January with general and nerve block. Day two post-op my lungs partially collapsed and I wound up in the ER with O2 level down to 88. The ER doctor said it can happen with anesthesia. I had no idea that could happen.

Are there alternatives to versed/ midazolam? The intermittent amnesia from it triggers panic for me. I can get loud & boisterous on it too(although it feels like I can't move). I would like to know alternative options for future surgery. Thanks

Lots of time to you can't wait for surgery until your anxiety or depression is optimized. It takes time.

I'm not a professional singer but before radiation change Ben and when I had the tube stuck down my throat for open heart surgery it got even worse some days I don't even have a voice it's so scratchy and I it's like I have laryngitis and that's probably the cause from it to being ripped out cuz that's what they had to do they had to hold my arms down to do so because I grab the hose when they were trying to and told him that it hurt and for some reason I was cramping my stomach really bad and I don't know if that could be because I have radiation poisoning done to my stomach or if it was a hallucigen nation I was having

I’ve had two c-sections and during both I had an intense fear. In particular, during my second surgery, I didn’t want my child near me because I didn’t want them to feel my fear. I’m not sure I could handle another pregnancy out of concern this would repeat itself. Could it be a particular medicine that was used or would this be something my body just shows at a moment of vulnerability?

This may be a silly question, but can you please do a video about how smoking cigarettes may effect anesthesia, I am a smoker and I have tried so hard to stop, no luck yet, but I'm scared that my lungs are gonna be all messed up when I go under. Also do you use the white stuff and gas together? Or just one or the other?

Holy crap that makes so much sense! Versed makes me throw up! I had it for my wisdom teeth surgery. Now unfortunately I need gum graft surgery (long story) the periodontist wants to put me under my immediate reaction was no because of the meds I got before. Also don't youtube that or any kind oral surgery you will be scared. It only took an hour or so after the appointment to change my mind. If they do use versed (they did 10 MGs for my wisdom teeth) I am hopeful if they put 20-30 MGs of Zofran or Gravol along with the versed I won't end up puking on my parents carpet again. What do you think Dr K will that work? I will consult with the surgeon as well at the pre op appointment to see what he thinks

I know with the CRNAs and anesthesiologists I worked with, when the patient told us they always had n&v when waking up, they would get medication like during the surgery and especially before you were waking up. Getting that medication in you before you were waking always seemed to help. Also,10 mg of versed is a big dose! It was all I could do to get 2 mg for my heart cath 2 years ago!

@@ccoop3774 ok they probably gave me too much versed. I am a small person like 92 pounds they weighed me beforehand. When I got the IV in the nurse who did the IV asked another nurse who was prepping the meds "what do you want to give her" I said in my head "drugs" hahaahahah anyways the other nurse said "10 Mg of Midazolam" I said in my head "ok thats a drug name I have heard before" Anyways ok thanks for the tip I will mention dosage to the surgeon I am seeing to see if he thinks it is possible they gave me too much

@@jessicas2379 Oh, I'm sorry! I didn't mean you were given too much! You are a tiny person though! I do know that our anesthesia personnel would start out with 2mg and go from there to help relieve anxiety. Naturally people having a surgical procedure where it's not general anesthesia will get more versed. You go by what has worked for you in the past! I didn't mean to imply you were given too much. I can't speak for your caregivers because I know nothing about it. You take care.

I had surgery 9 days ago and ever since my restless legs are worse than ever. I have been taking Gabapentine 300-400mg a day and now they are not working. What has happened???

I'm so sorry to hear that. I hope your recovery has been good otherwise. Blood loss could be related if it affected your iron levels. You should speak with your doctor

Please Help....I have emergence delirium. I thrash violently. I am not aware of what I'm doing. What are the possible reasons? Can I be given something like valium in my IV before I wake up?

I'm so sorry you had that experience, but I greatly admire your vulnerability in sharing that. be sure to mention it to your anesthesiologist if you ever have surgery again. Have you seen my other videos on the topic?

I have had depression and anxiety for over 30 years. The last time I had anesthesia they told me after it was very hard to put me to sleep when I woke up. Do you think it is because of this?

Great question: the effect is often subtle and hard to find unless you're looking for it... But I can't say for sure in your case. It's certainly a possibility. I hope you have a provider who is helping you 🙏

He didn't said how it reveals under anesthesia. I would really like to know also how loneliness "shows up".

I getting anexious again for my right knee I have to get an mpfl replacement this year like I did for my left knee 8 years ago

I had surgery in 2020 fir gallbadder and after i woke up i said i was nauseous and the nurse was like you cant be sick you have nothing in your stomach

That sounds like a horrible nurse. When I had my gallbladder surgery I was nauseous after and they offered me Medicine for it.

His hair is covered! When you wear those caps for a few hours, some hair is bound to escape. Plus, he's not near the surgical wound. There's drapes that are clamped on poles to separate him and the patient's head from the surgical site.

You think with all the schooling and knowledge he has had over years, that he would do anything against what he has been taught and teaches in public? Might want to rethink that.

On the plus side, you could end up with a sexier voice

You should be looking at peoples horoscopes. Look at their 12th house. And you might well be able to tell, how they will react on an unconscious level.
