How You’re Sheathing a Katana Incorrectly
Ойын-сауық
A common mistake when sheathing your katana is this…
…
However, what you should do is this:
…
Keep the Tsuka-gashira, the end of the handle, at the center of your body,
This is because you can only draw toward the direction the Tsuka-gashira is facing.
Some call Iai, the Budo of katana drawing, “the art of constant cautiousness.”
The ultimate goal is not to give any chance to the opponent to attack.
So if you move the Tsuka-gashira around very time you sheath, you can’t immediately draw again if necessary.
You must use your left hand more to control the sheath so that the Tsuka-gashira stays at the center.

That was actually really educational. I never knew that when it came specifically to the katana. Ty!!
It always amazes me just how much attention to detail goes into this stuff. Things I would literally never think about.
That’s actually really neat, thanks for the tip
Dang it really took me about 10 months learning how to properly sheath my cheap katanas (entry levels) ive been doing the common mistake this entire time. watching tutorials of how to sheath it but I kept sheathing it uncomfortably and almost stabbing my fingers countless times. but after watching this and this time actually understanding how to do it now im slowly getting the hang of it. thank you! 👍
If you read this you just got another subscriber from America. Your videos are HIGHLY educational and very informative. Also I'm admittedly obsessed with swords ESPECIALLY the legendary katana, such an absolutely BEAUTIFUL creation of mankind, though the uchigatana is equally tied with it in my personal perspective.
I will check out your online lessons. You are a great teacher!❤
I one time spent like an hour and a half just focusing on chiburi in class... it's so complicated when you focus on every movement. After 11yrs of practicing, still feel like a newb when doing it compared to the founders/sensei, they do it butter smooth, no problem.... just requires more practice and more attention to detail!
I never knew this, as I would probably never wield one. This information is something useful to use in a conversation and be seen as a more knowledgeable person (even if by a little).
Thank you for this insight, Mr. Shogo. I've learned from it.
In other word: don't move your back, move your hips! And yes, I struggled with this when I was a beginner, because moving the back forward felt more natural at first, but when you create body consciouness, you figure out moving the hips sideways is actually easier!
@janneskodny2270
23 күн бұрын
Well, actually you can do noto without hips, just use sayabiki correctly with left hand work. And it is more effective, because you don't lose time with not necessary hip movement if you need to suddenly return to action.

In iaido it is very dependent on the school how you put the sword away.
The first is pretty on brand with character designs for anime and games whilst his actual demonstration of sheathing is how it is actually done. Much practical. 😊
Thanks, I'm very prepared now in case I have to sheathe a katana😊
After watch the throw technique video I exclusively only use my left hand to draw and sheath, my right hand became less sore!

Depending on the ryu and performance level, the gashira may not necessarily be at the body’s median. In Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu, chudan and okudan level notos are performed with the katana parallel to the stance (the gashira is aligned with the left hip, rather than the center of the body). However, shodan level notos are performed as you demonstrated.
Interesting to know, personally I prefer European swords and for single edge blades I prefer shorter blades
I always thought it was just for dramatic effect. Didn't know there's practicality for it
At first I thought he was over extending and that's what the problem was
Thanks for the blade clink ASMR
Generally, I am not a fan of weapons, specifically knives and swords. However, I am impressed how you handle katana with such ease and elegance. I had no idea that there is a technique of drawing out a sword! Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
I did read somewhere that younger Japanese speakers are softening their voiced stops, this is the first time I hear that
Yes, in some styles even hip movement is locked when sheathing with bigger emphasis on sayabiki.
I'm left handed and had to physically do this like 2 times before i fully got it
I’ve never liked the thumb on top sheath grip. I experimented with gluing a small wood knob to the sheath so I can manipulate and index the sheath better the sheath better. It did seem to improve my draw speed back when I first got interested in this subject. I’ve since dropped the hobby of collecting swords. I gave away my collection a few years ago to an ex I was dating at the time. She liked collecting themed movie swords. She and I were into medieval Larping back then. We both had friends that were into martial arts at the time.
Talks about grip not being important to shooting yet proper grip is the first thing you learn in shooting handgun.
I was never taught this when studying Aido as a teenager.
Am I the only one who thought of the StarWars quote "The student has become the master" when he said to check out his online classes if you want to learn katana techniques?😂
I’ve also been taught to keep the sword flat and not raise the handle when sheathing or drawing (unless you have a reason to)
Thankfully I don’t need to worry about this since Im not a samurai nor do I own a katana
Beautiful
SO THIS IS WHAT IAI IS! I say this because there's a move in Monster Hunter called Spirit Iai Slash but I never understood why.
It also probably builds in consistency with regards to handling. I know in firearms ypu want to make actionable practices even when they aren't nessisary as it's basically a free reps. So when you load your firearm, you treat it like a reload, you aren't building memory of two things just one. Same with drawing and clearing, do it like you would In a fight or right after a fight, you may be physically at a range but you don't need to train yourself to be at one mentally
You should make a video with tenshinryu hyohou at some point. Maybe a collab with their school on mat cutting? Granted a lot of them prolly work too. But overall I would love to see you guys train with them or have them teach you things, just as you’ll do with them. They are located in saitama I’m pretty sure.
Thanks for telling me
"As it greets the moment so it should return to slumber" Literal reverse unsheathing?
Yea I would mess myself up real bad if I tried any of that.
So that only matters when there's a threat in front of you
And it looks totally cool.
I learned that on Samurai Jack :)
It also looks less dorky when you keep the handle in the center. 😄 And I like red outfit!
This dude is a literal samurai

It is like saying that buying guns for target practice and wearing military-themed clothes make you a soldier.
Not only is it more practical, but let's all be honest, the proper way to sheathe a katana looks cooler too.
Amazing you are awesome how do you get matching blades I have a katana but I am trying to get a matching dagger to go with it but I don’t know how any advice
So cool 😮
the sudden urge to own a katana
Yes I always taught that you don't want to extend your other hand so far out it's very easy for them to take your balance, and it's always just... easier as well. (I wanted to learn iai but... I had to take bujinkan ninutsu to learn any of it. And they ended up not really teaching that much.)
that's truly a beautiful culture
Corporate needs you to find the diffrence between these two moves
The first way may have been bad technique, but it makes your sword look really long! 😉
If you make a mistake sheating a katana, how bad would be the wound on your hand be if there is one
Where did you buy that Kimono i really like the color
I love how old teachings of how to correctly wield a sword are exactly the same as modern concealled carry trainers. Teachings for the same purpose made by the same kinds of people.
It's crazy how Samurai existed at the same time as cowboys
as Usual I learned something interesting and new noice
Call me a barbarian. I honestly had no idea what I was supposed to be looking at till he showed the correct way 😂
Meanwhile lancknechts in mediaval europe: Hey Bob, done with the fighitng? Yeah just throw that greatsword on the cart and lets go.
I forgot the sheath so the sword is in the center but my hand is on the ground
We also mive the saya to the back of waist, it call Sayabiki
You also pulled the scabbard towards the hilt in the second way, Or maybe that was just me.
Americans have channels like this where a guy teaches you how to unholster your revolver in a cool way. He should find One of those channels and just once have the cowboy do katana techniques and the samurai do quick draw
Have the sheaths meet the sword.
Extra fun fact: Pull the Sheath behind you so that sheathing the blade wouldn't be more difficult
I thought the common mistake was not looking badass when sheathing. 😂
Zanshin, i remember that from the Chiburui video
*The Only Thing I Know for Real intensifies*
a wise man once said: why bring a knife to a gun fight
This is like regular boxers comparing Haymakers to jabs... its obvious and we all know it already
Why would I ever need this.
My sword is one with heaven and earth. My body, however, requires a lot of work.
Slower noto, no clinking.
Nice point for vertical noto. I like to focus on sayabiki for my ryu's horizontal noto. Would you say that sayabiki is less important for vertical noto?
I noticed you hold the top on the sheath, how do you not cut your hand or fingers when sheathing the blade?
why are you sheathing your weapon when there are enemies that may attack still around?
How is it done if you have two katanas? Or is it standard practice to wield one 🤔
And I was just like "Oh, that's why that one anime technique is called that/what it refferences!"
I like the awkward face when you're demonstrating the incorrect method
