How You’re Sheathing a Katana Incorrectly

Ойын-сауық

A common mistake when sheathing your katana is this…

However, what you should do is this:

Keep the Tsuka-gashira, the end of the handle, at the center of your body,
This is because you can only draw toward the direction the Tsuka-gashira is facing.
Some call Iai, the Budo of katana drawing, “the art of constant cautiousness.”
The ultimate goal is not to give any chance to the opponent to attack.
So if you move the Tsuka-gashira around very time you sheath, you can’t immediately draw again if necessary.
You must use your left hand more to control the sheath so that the Tsuka-gashira stays at the center.

Depending on the ryu and performance level, the gashira may not necessarily be at the body’s median. In Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu, chudan and okudan level notos are performed with the katana parallel to the stance (the gashira is aligned with the left hip, rather than the center of the body). However, shodan level notos are performed as you demonstrated.

I’ve never liked the thumb on top sheath grip. I experimented with gluing a small wood knob to the sheath so I can manipulate and index the sheath better the sheath better. It did seem to improve my draw speed back when I first got interested in this subject. I’ve since dropped the hobby of collecting swords. I gave away my collection a few years ago to an ex I was dating at the time. She liked collecting themed movie swords. She and I were into medieval Larping back then. We both had friends that were into martial arts at the time.

So when you load your firearm, you treat it like a reload, you aren't building memory of two things just one. Same with drawing and clearing, do it like you would In a fight or right after a fight, you may be physically at a range but you don't need to train yourself to be at one mentally
