Theres a passage in one of the chaos Codices describing a chaos lords reaction to being put inside of a dreadnought, he takes one look at the chassis, starts fighting aback against the people interring him, then when that doesn't work he starts begging his brothers to just kill him instead.

@@whitewall2253 In the Dark Apostle series, there's a deliciously twisted short story about a Word Bearer who really, really pissed off the protagonist, his superior (with whom, if memory serves, he previously was of equal rank), to the point where he was entombed into a dreadnought AND his dream between deployment is always him attempting to escape his captivity. And, just a daily reminder - it can always get worse. I'll edit the message when I remember/find the name of the story. It's pretty good, really.

Dreadnoughts are very depressing when you look at it. Dead but still alive, arms but can't feel, legs but can't move, power but no control, honored yet only tolerated, human yet still machine. They are less human than when they were Astartes. But it's good to know some still have the capability to still be chipper about things. That's something to say the least.

I mean, could be worse. Could be a chaos dreadnought. Loyalist Astarte dreadnoughts are crippled and mangled space marines barely alive, floating on a synthetic amniothic liquid and kept on life support. Their pain is dulled, but eternal, and they are allowed to slumber for years if the chapter deems they are not needed on the battlefield. So they get somewhat some comfort. Chaos dreadnoughts, however, is a never-ending torture. The fallen marine is forced into the sarcophagus (the thick cockpit of the dreadnought), and the various tubes, devices, and such are stabbed into their skin and spine in cold blood. They barely have space to move inside the sarcophagus, they are in constant pain, there is no slumber nor painkillers, and they are depraved from the ability to feel with their own hands. Almost all chaos dreadnoughts are ravingly mad and are chained to the space ship's deepest holding bays, only released on the battlefield to attack everything like a rampaging gorilla.

Given the amount of neurosurgery needed for black carapace implantation, making tactile feedback on the ... ceramite plated claw-arm ... wait yeah that is pretty complicated and current dreadnaught designs are likely a compromise between Mechanicus knowledge and the skills of apothecaries & techmarines. At least the psychosurgery is still working *nervous laugh*

So why dont they just get a normal human child and entomb them in the dreadnaught before their an adult like when their a child. And then train them in how to use the dreadnaught so that way they never have to deal with phantom limb or pain.

Dreadnoughts are very powerful war machines, only astartes and custodes have the alchemical/physiological/spiritual strength to guide its machine spirit. During the heresy, a bunch of dreadnoughts were piloted by what were once basic tactical marines, because they were just that important to the legiones.
