How YOU Can Hunt Elk on a Budget!

Randy Newberg explains how a non-resident can go elk hunting on a reasonable budget. You don't have to be a millionaire to go elk hunting in the west! If you don't live in a state where you can buy a resident elk tag, and you want to go elk hunting, the reality is that you will incur some cost. In this video, Randy explains how to go elk hunting every year, and what states provide the most value to a nonresident elk hunter.

@Bthorn 50 Haha I pulled an Elk tag in Arizona for literally the worst Elk unit in the country. I didn't know if at the time. I couldn't even hire a guide because no one wanted to take the job in that unit. Turns out there is alot of cattle ranchers who lease the public land and they have free reign to kill the Elk that encroaches on their water supply. Needless to say, there was no Elk. Thanks for asking. This Eastern Boy is going to have to rethink my strategy.

Thanks for the great breakdown and possible strategy for applying to elk hunt in the west. Really helpful for those of us who are from the East and might only get one big western hunt a year and is on a tight budget where we can’t carpet bomb 💣 the west with applications. I like how you explained the timing of the draws and possible refunds of our well earned and saved money. Plus also building points for future hunts in the process. I pretty much have 1-3 points in every state for elk outside of the west coast states. I did screw up in Wyoming because I saw the $1200 special draw price and said that I can’t afford that. But after seeing the regular price of $770 or so I bought a point last year. I have 3 points for deer 🦌 and pronghorn in Wyoming and should have the same for elk if not for my misunderstanding. I have 3 elk points in Colorado and hope to do a 1st rifle hunt like you did in 2020. Thank you again Randy.

I guess where you are determines what is a dream hunt. To me it’s caribou and moose, but for someone who lives in Alaska, I guess elk might be their dream hunt.

As always, Thanks for the video Randy and crew! 😀👍 I know there is a plethora of variables that go into an out of state hunt, but how about an "OOS budget" video to show a breakdown of costs associated with an out of state hunt (gear, food, housing, gas, etc..) that'll kind of paint the picture of how much to save on top of the $1200 budget?

  • @Fresh_Tracks

    @Fresh_Tracks

    2 жыл бұрын

That is so variable. I always tell folks that they can likely use whatever they use for deer and do just fine, so equipment shouldn't be a huge investment. Sharing travel costs with friends, bringing pre-cooked meals from home, and doing your own game processing are other ways to lower the cost substantially. I am sure it can be done, including tags and license, for less than $1,800 per person, even with higher gas costs.

Good stuff; wish we could upload excel on you tube. I was lucky enough to get a Idaho tag and it was just about every bit of this budget. However, because they don't allow group applications in the OTC sale period and they randomly assign customer que numbers; I had to choose the unit carefully so that we all could hunt in the same area. My number was in the low 3,000s in the customer que (supper lucky), and my hunting buddy was in the 21,000 + (not so lucky), in the que. I got an elk tag and he got a deer tag in a unit with overlapping seasons. My buddy's adult son came in late so he knew he wouldn't get a tag is going to come along as a non-hunter. If I picked a different unit that sold out more quickly, I don't think that we would be hunting together this year at all.

Randy, love all of your content, however I think there's a glitch with this particular planning method if you're looking at putting in for the Colorado draw. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the money you need to front for New Mexico won't be returned until after the NM draw, which occurs late April. However, to apply in Colorado, you need to put that money up at the CO application deadline, which is usually within the first week of April. So it's not exactly like you'll have your money back in time if you were truly relying on just that rolling budget. Unless I'm missing something?

Hey Randy, I noticed that with this video as well as your "Best Value" video, you didn't include the OTC elk tags for Western Oregon. Is that because you just don't have a lot of experience in Western Oregon hunting for Rosies, focusing on Rocky Mtn elk only, or some other reasons? Western Oregon has tons of public land for hunting, and it has it's own challenges, but there are some quality bulls out there. There's also OTC fall bear & mountain lion for less than $20 each for a nonresident. Regardless, super appreciate this video as with a large family I am on a budget, and saving $100/month is doable, thanks!

Biggest reason is most the audience would be driving through Idaho and Wyoming/Colorado to get there. Given travel is a huge cost and logistic complication, it is hard for folks to justify traveling to western OR for an elk and while passing through so many other great elk locations. Hope that helps.

@@Fresh_Tracks Naw that makes perfect sense, and definitely fits the the 'best value' goal you had. I know you talk to the Born and Raised guys and Corey's hunted western OR Rosies, didn't think you'd forgotten about OR & WA OTC stuff. Appreciate the reply, and again, always appreciate your content and info! Thanks.

As a resident of Idaho I will agree and disagree Idaho for nonresident hunters is probably the least expensive but you better be on your toes because you've already paid for the hunting license and I'm assuming you're a nonresident but you can still but an otc tag like I said be on your toes if you want to hunt if it goes on sale have all your information the day at 12p.m not 7:30 in the morning. Now 1200 dollars hasn't even gotten you out of your state better put away a lot more than that and you better be in shape because in order to increase your odds you need to be at least 3 miles from the nearest road so what I'm saying is by the time you figure in all the costs you might want to consider an outfitter.. Elk meat isn't going to be very cheap for an Elk hunter in any state for a nonresident.

In CO, if you apply for LE & draw a tag, can you decline the tag or do they automatically withdraw the full price of the elk tag? When is the deadline after results are announced to make full payment?

Do the elk points carry over to other species in that state, or are they all separate?

Randy, very similar to my $240/month strategy but I do have a Q 4 U 😉 What about the $100 for each month that goes by during the app season? Do you add to your budget or are you just banking it for the next year? Good luck to everyone that sees this. 👀

Thanks Randy for doing this, but I do have a question. Whats the best way to do the $1200 is better to have a sperate checking account using a debit card or credit card? The reason I ask I don't want my credit card carrying a balance month to month .

Either checking account of credit card. Debit cards are bad news. Just pay off the balance each month with the money you have set aside for this purpose.

Great video condensing a lot of info down, but The spreadsheet shows the tag fee at 15$ but what I see online at AZ game/fish is 600$? Am I looking at something wrong?

Application fee is $15, plus you must have a hunting license. You only pay the the $650 if you draw.

I had the same thought 🤔 I definitely couldn't drive their and back and eat plus have a little extra for unknown situations likely less than 1400 in fuel from Arkansas and back. I would plan to hunt for two weeks and that could be close to 500. Extras???? Hopefully not but gotta have the extra just in case!

We've done that before. Maybe we should refresh and update it for current costs. Under $1,800 if planned properly and not looked at as an expensive vacation.

Wait, if you buy an OTC tag for Colorado, you only need the habitat stamp which is only $10.40 dollars and the elk tag at 688.. I think you misspoke about that

Hmm. As far as I know, you must still buy a license. I could be wrong, but that is how I have done it when I bought an elk tag there.
