Hey all, if your thinking about moving to Mexico, find something in Baja Mexico from TJ playas to rosarito to ensenada. If not you can look at TJ or tecate, but I wouldn't recommend it long term. The Baja side or beaches are nice and cool and some places are cheap. Known many people living in these places without any permanent visa or living visa or retirement visa. They simply come and go as they please with a passport. Some have been in Mexico for years and occasionally cross the border for something, but they don't need any special visa or permit. The bad part of living in Mexico was the border crossings into the u.s. are terrible. Make sure you have half tank of gas for traveling with a vehicle, wait times could be 1-5 hours. For any places beyond the Baja north or TJ and tecate you may need special visas, Jose probably knows more about this.

It amazes me how many people collecting social security here in the states won't consider Latin American countries. Many can't afford to do anything but struggle, so they book themselves into a retirement community and live a very sub-par life. We've all heard about elderly eating cat food.

I agree it is very sad to see that, but the reality is that once you get to a certain age moving to another country seems as daunting as moving to the Moon. We must also take that into consideration. That is why I try to provide as much helpful information for those out there that can still do the move. What upsets me even more is how much wrong information there is out there about this topic. Hope this video is able to help all those who need to hear this info. Thanks again for sharing

You can overstay your visa and hire a facilitator to do regularization process. I heard it's about 900 us dollars to pay for the temporary residency and penalty fee for overstaying. Plus 200-300 us dollars to facilitator. You must stay in Mexico until your visa stamp expires though then apply for regularization.

One thing I noticed watching your video. You keep referring to the FMM as a "Tourist VISA". It is not a VISA. It is a tourist PERMIT. Yes Mexico does issue tourist VISAS for people who come from a country that is not in the international visitor agreement. South Korea or Cuba for example. As an Immigrant from the US who first came on an FMM (tourist permit) then a consulate visit, then temporary resident, now permanent resident I help a lot of people come as expats or immigrants (you do know the difference) and the term "tourist visa" is misused a lot. And it causes a lot of confusion among people trying to move here. Please edit your video and understand the terminology. Yes it is important because if you talk to a government official and use the term "VISA" they will think you are working on the temporary/permanent process. Also your information about entering Mexico is in most cases incorrect. Each INM office seems to handle a little different, but for the most part you must have entered Mexico at least once BEFORE Covid. 2020. They may accept other dates in other states but in Sinaloa if you flew in in December 2022 and let your FMM expire you would not qualify for the current program, frequently referred to as the "Amnesty Program" Likewise if you entered Mexico in 2023 AND they extend the program you would not qualify. You must have entered in 2020 or before. Again as I say each INM office handles things a bit different. Afterall, it is Mexican Government, which makes US government look like a fine oiled machine. But one thing has not changed. Since the change from FM1's, FM2's, FM3's, the old immigration system, the INM officer granting your entry into Mexico has ALWAYS had discretion on the number of days they grant. I will commend you however on suggesting several times that you talk to a professional who is experienced in the state you are moving too. I have vast experience and have helped many move to Sinaloa, but would be just taking my best shot at helping someone through the process in another state.

Great question! Honestly from what I have heard from others they don't even care if you speak the language or not at the consulate. I could be wrong about the consulate but regardless it is in your best interest to learn some Spanish if you are going to be living in a Spanish speaking country to make the experience so much better. So are you saying if you are over 65 you do not have to have the minimum income required by the consulate in the U.S. And as long as you can prove you are 65 and social security is paying you a monthly income your mexican counsulate will approve a retirement visa.

  • @JoseArteagaTravels

Yes according to Mexican Law that is correct, but as we mentioned in the video each consulate is different and might require more than what the law says. If that is the case and you do not meet the requirements they ask for then you must find another consulate that will follow the law as it is written.

There is no age requirement to either visit Mexico on an FMM (tourist permit) or to apply for temporary or permanent residency. You only need to qualify for financial solvency or meet the requirements for the regularization (commonly referred to as the Amnesty program). I started my residency pre-Covid when the only way was through financial solvency. I was 58. You say you are retired, not 65? and plan on collecting SS at 62. I assume that means you are younger than 62. If you have visited Mexico pre covid, 2020 or before you can TRY the regularization process but no guarantee it will work. Depending on the state I would say 75/25% chance it will. But you say you are retired so I am going to assume you have a reasonable income or a decent net worth. The sooner you apply for residency the better as the financial solvency requirements have gone up 20-25% each year since 2018. When I applied the monthly income required was about $1200 per month or $85,000 in liquid investments. Today it is close to $4000 a month and $400,000 in liquid investments. The financial solvency is based on the Mexican minimum daily wage. It has gone up 20-25% each year since 2020 hence the drastic increase. Also right now the dolar is weak against the peso so depending on what exchange rate the consulate you choose uses it varies.

We just spent 4.5 months in Mexico for the first time. We arrived in Nov 23/22. And have now returned back home. I would like to start off with temporary residency, I am 66yrs old and my wife is 63. So if I understand correctly I would have to go to the nearest Mexican consulate in Canada and apply. My wife and myself are collecting Canada pension, although my wife is only 63. So my question is should I only apply and get our marriage certificate translated to Spanish? I was confused about the marriage certificate translation? And lastly what documents do I need to bring on application to the consulate. Thank You Mike B

  • @JoseArteagaTravels

You have a few options. If you at 65 get approved then you can come to Mexico and then your wife can apply through Family structure since you are both married she gets residency because you have residency. The Translation of documents is done in Mexico with a profesional. Remember each consulate will approve people at their disgresion. If that one does not work you might have to try another one. For more information on what documentation you need please check on the consulates website. And to check what you need in Mexico check the website of the local immigration office you want to use. All consulates and all immigration offices work with their own interpretation of the laws. Hope that helps if you need any more help please feel free to contact Jose Novelo directly

After you get your temporary residency, you are not required to live in Mexico for any link of time. You can come once a year and spend a week, the time to get your residency card and come back when you are ready to move. There is no requirement on how many days people need to spend in Mexico after getting residency. I would advise you to start the process right away because every year, the consulate raises the minimum fir economic solvency. Do not wait.

Not true. All offices are different. If you were told that in one consulate or INM office then just go to another one and keep shopping around until you find one that is accepting appointments. There is a lot of misinformation on this subject and one must not settle for the first and only opinion one gets. If one really wants residency they can get it. It wont be easy but it can be done

By "letter from the government" will your Letter of proof of SS payments do? I'd also like to know what the Mexican law is that allows this, in case the consulate wants to give me a hard time about it. I want to move to MX so badly, but with the cost of living and wages going up, I will never qualify by income.

  • @JoseArteagaTravels

    @JoseArteagaTravels

    Жыл бұрын

Yes the letter we speak of is the letter of proof of SS Payments. Here is a link to the law www.diputados.gob.mx/LeyesBiblio/pdf/LMigra.pdf But at the end of the day what we were trying to say is that basically every consulate has a mind of its own and choose to follow and interpret the laws how they see fit. Which is the frustrating part for many who can not rely on what is actually written in the law books but instead on the whim of a government employee. This is why so many speak of "Shopping around" for consulates. Some are more strict and others more lenient. Good luck with everything! Hope this information helps!

I will have Jose Novelo on Next Thursday's Livestream where he will clarify and answer that question. The letter they are asking for is basically a statement from your Government saying that you receive a monthly retirement check from the US Government. That is what Mexican law says. There is no minimum requirement to qualify. But each agent will use their own disggresion and judgment on what they think is enough. For some agents/offices a letter is plenty, for some they want a minimum amount. This is why so many people looking to get residency out of a consulate have to shop around until they find the right consulate to approve them. Hope this information helps.

You can apply for Temporary Residency through this program. There is no English version it is coming straight from the Mexican Government. You would have to manually translate it.

Thank you so much for this information. Two questions, if you don't mind: If you qualify for the temporary residency based on your income, you have to renew it after one year, correct? Do you have to show that your income qualifies again when you renew it? How long can you renew it for; 3 years? So, after 3 more years, do you have to show your income if you want to change it to permanent residency or are you good to go because you've been there for 4 years? 🙂
