    But in the cold Soviet Union, the temperature will be just right for a hand warmer. With rifles it’s easier to control the recoil of the rifle the more evenly you hold it. The magazine is usually in the center so it’s not the best for recoil management. This is mostly a preference kind of situation as some people can do it just fine holding it by the magazine. I cannot so I hold mine further up the rifle.

    That's the thing. The Soviet soldiers couldn't buy a better one. The PPSh-42 was what they got. And those thin drum magazines were prone to dents if you squeezed the magazine too hard or tried to use it to stabilize recoil, which is the whole point of holding it anyway. The early models of the PPSh-42 with drum magazine was designed to be held behind the magazine. But this was uncomfortable, so soldiers did it anyway. This caused so many problems for the soviet army that they discontinued the drum magazine completely and replaced it with 35-round stick magazines that they then were also told to only feed to 30 rounds; otherwise, the spring would wear out and not press hard enough to feed, because springs back then were junk by todays standards.

    The mp40 is a major exception to being held by the magazine. They were never meant to be held there and most images that appear to be held that way are actually being held by the metal outcrop from the magazine guide/catch. This was due to the design of the gun causing jams to occur often if not used properly, and therefore soldiers were trained to specifically not hold the mp40 by the mag to prevent issues.

    the only issue is that (which it shares with all Mp guns (18/28/wmp/34), grabbing it from the outcrop is that your hands are a bit too close, so the hand at the outcrop works more like a seesaw fulcrum than an anchor for the recoil... and that is way more instinctive to grab it by the mag, a good way to fix it was to grab it by the bottleneck between the magwell and barrel... or by the magwell itself

    @@enraikow6109 oh, so do you know where the receiver is? It’s basically the intake for the magazine, and on the MP40, the receiver sticks out quite a bit (on the bottom of the gun) and so I called it an outcropping for lack of a better word. So they hold it by the piece of the receiver that sticks out of the bottom, not the actual magazine. You can likely look up the instructions manual translated from German, and it should show it iirc. Or look up an image of the MP40 without the magazine in, and you’ll see the part of the receiver that sticks out on the bottom. Cheers!

  • @balongaboy
    @balongaboy Жыл бұрын

    You can hold literally almost any firearm by the magazine, the whole “don’t do that” stems entirely from someone else hearing from someone else about someone who had experience with it causing jams. I’m glad you brought up holding the magazine in, I can count on one hand the times an M4 or M16 jammed while resting it on its magazine, but I couldn’t possibly count the time I’ve had to hold a magazine tight to get it to feed at all. Weapons aren’t so frail as to stop working the second the magazine is bumped, it’s almost always down to a worn magazine not seating properly.

    That's why the PPSh-41 was NOT designed to be held by the magazine. It is true for other magazines, but not the PPSh-41. The thin sheet metal of the drum magazine would bulge and cause the rounds to get stuck. So soldiers were encouraged to hold just behind the magazine, which was uncomfortable, so soldiers held it by the magazine anyway. But it was not designed for this, and it did cause issues for the PPSh-41. Eventually, the drum magazine was completely discontinued and replaced with a 35-round stick magazine, which was typically only filled to 30 rounds to not overload the spring. The real answer is: it depends on the weapon. Not all WW2 SMGs work the same way.

  • @lifepolicy
