I think you saying “I wanted to live in the endless now that was xenoblade 1’s ending” I think that’s what honestly makes xenoblade 3 so amazing. It’s what makes this series and story so strong for me.

I think you’re missing one key thing here, xenoblade 1 is carving a path to the future, xenoblade 2 is about dealing with the consequences of the past, and xenoblade 3 is about living in the present

I feel the main theme of curving a path to the future is present in all blade games, id say the real difference is the sub themes like huburis, morallity, and being stuck in the past or (the much cooler) Endless Now.

Great video. Indeed, there are just so many parallels between Xenoblade 3 and the previous games that it's hard to know which ones are intentional and which ones are accidental. Something I took note of was how the state of humanity in Xenoblade 3 is very close to that of Blades in Xenoblade 2, particularly Jin's bleak portrayal of a Blade's existence: Your lifespan is artificially shortened and determined by forces outside of your control, you're a living weapon denied the chance to form and pass on a culture of your own, instead exploited by others for their benefit. The ability to humans in Aionios to summon weapons in the exact same manner as Blades, and the fact that Origin seems to be filled with massive core crystal-like objects further makes me think that Z had Blades in mind when deciding the characteristics of the people making up his Endless Now. And the way the Lost Numbers steal cradles from Moebius to weaken them reminds me of Torna stealing core crystals.

The Homs and other species from 1 are also made of a mix of organic/robotic matter and Ether, and get sick in the absence of good Ether similar to Blades. It was probably very easy for Z to reconfigure them into a Blade-like existence.

I like how the one major difference between XC2 blades and XC3 humans is that XC2 blades are reborn with the memes of their past drivers, though they lack the memories, while XC3 humans are denied those memes and turned into a blank slate that can only vaguely recall the ways they died in the past.

I just want to say that using the actual definition of meme instead of actual memes is the most "think outside the box" level of on point clickbait I've ever seen Well, I'm here, it worked

When you were discussing Xenoblade 1's climax and how 3 feels like an ironic betrayal of it, I honestly started to well up because I felt so strongly conflicted myself. I wanted to live in the endless now that was Xenoblade 1's happy ending, where all people were supposed to walk hand in hand. I'll probably always feel conflicted about that feeling of betrayal, of that happy ending being so quickly soiled, but this video made me think about the real human emotions of the endless now and the difficulty of accepting new hardships in a way I hadn't before. lovely video.

Yeah. I get what XC3 wanted to say, but it's not a message I enjoyed hearing, and while yes sure you could argue that that's the point and it's not supposed to feel nice... I dunno. I kinda enjoy having fun. So while I'm sure there's artistic value in being told that having fun is bad, I don't think it's necesarrily something I'd enjoy. I feel a lot like this with XC3. I understand what they went for and they DID convey that message masterfully. I just really didn't like the message.

The way I see it is that Shulk unlocked the gateway for humans to have a real future, but they had to learn to embrace it themselves. Shulk built the bridge, they had to cross it. I like how it’s not taken for granted

@@EskChan19 Actually I don't think that's what xc3 is trying to say at all. The "endless now" does not just represent "having fun is bad", in fact the City and Ouroborus - as the main opposition to Moebius - are frequently seen just enjoying life in the present, despite their desire for change. Moebius I feel more represent sloth and people's fear of change (I tend to draw parallels to Persona 5 and its core idea that society's collapse is based around the public's mindset of just accepting that the world is unjust and there's nothing they can do about it, so they just stay put and don't do anything). However, striving for change and making sacrifices for you future does not mean that you are not allowed to enjoy your life in the present. In fact, I'd say that xenoblade 3 is opposed to that if anything. The Journey and Destination are both equally important, and neglecting either one for too long leads to destruction. To sum that up as "having fun is bad" would be to overlook the series' core message of living life *the way you want to*. I do understand your stance though. The idea of not focusing on the future being you having fun in the present is like a core motivation for a lot of strict parents being harsh on their kids. It's like, if you're seen having too much fun and taking time for yourself, that's viewed as you neglecting your future by a lot of people which is fucked, I agree. However I don't think that is xenoblade's message

Finally found something interesting for Z so he's the embodiment of the vile nature that humanity will always have, the same vile nature that changed and infected klaus and amalthus into what they both became. WOW I LOVE THIS SERIES

It almost makes me jealous how every single video of yours makes me go: “man, I wonder if I’ll make a video that good someday.” It really does feel like you bring something new to the table every time. Thanks for the excellent analyses as usual.

Excellent video. One of the things I'm learning to appreciate about 3 more and more is how the dna of both 1 and 2 run through its soul. I was initially dissapointed that no returning characters, save the queen, make an appearance, save for maybe a few references here or there. But the soul of the previous two entries become more apparent the more I think and delve into this game. Its as if not only the physical lands of 1 and 2 merged, but its lessons and ideas as well. Everything I loved about 1 and 2 are present. Just in a different form.

The themes of rebellion in the Xenoblade trilogy I think are a very old meme based off of real events for example the Xenoblade games story could be retold like this an evil King oppresses their people in an attempt to continue their rule and from that oppression comes discontent with the status quo and that discontent fuels a rebellion against the king destroying the status quo and bringing something new. I think it's interesting how memes like this keep going on through all of these years I've heard memes never die they just change or go into dormant and I think that's true and the Xenoblade trilogy is some proof for that.

I literally JUST rewatched your spoiler review on the game and then I see this video in my sub box, what a treat!

Spoilers for the entire Xeno franchise..... Can we eventually talk about all of the Xeno games showing forms of living forever and their unique struggles? Z, Moebius, Flesh Eaters, Zanza, Albedo, Lacan are all essentially immortal. But then you have other concepts in the franchise that are immortal through recurrence. Fei and Elly are forever reincarnated, the Blades of 2 are reborn without memories, the entire people of Aionios in 3 are reborn over and over, the Mimiosomes in X, the Faces of XC1, Xenosaga's Life Recycling Act and the literal Eternal Recurrence, Vandham as a character, hell even the themes of the series itself are recurring

Something I thought of when it comes to Annihilation Events is that you could say Z and Moebius allow the slow end of the world via inaction, as in they never try to address it (despite the black fog constantly causing issues). As such, this is a way you can connect them to Amalthus.

Yeah. Eventually the worlds would end and Z would never allow Origin to perform the reboot, so that would be the end of everything.

The chills down my spine that this video gave me were awesome and has made me nostalgic for these games. Great job on the video.

I'll never forget the tears I shed by the end of the third game (just finished it this past weekend!), specially when spoilers: The world were being split apart once again. One of the lines that have been with me for the entire series was Alvis' Vision for a New World at the end of the first game. That the people of the New World would walk together towards the future, Hand-in-Hand. That message was always stuck behind my mind, and then the split happened once more- with the promise that both worlds and its people would someday return, to walk together, hand-in-hand. I wen from just shedding tears to bawling all over the sofa. The message Alvis left me, left us, was a mission I wanted to see become reality- and for a moment I saw that for a whole game: Xenoblade 3 would have 1 and 2 co-exist and fight together for the right to live life as it was meant to be, defeating the desire to be stuck in an Endless Now of Mobius. We walked together, but then, like stars crossing over, we were separated once more. It made me want to fulfill Alvis' Vision in the name of Shulk who saved the future and Rex who broke the past, and Noah who lived the promised present.

I was worried Xenoblade 3 would be derivative of the other two by integrating so much of their originality as its core foundation, but I was glad to see that, not only does the gameplay, story, and characters stand tall in their own right, but they are bolstered by their ties to the other games in a way that's designed for the fans. Monolith Soft is so kind.

This is such a great video essay, really amazing work. The memes and themes are like you say, intertwined and the seeds are certainly there. 10/10 will throw my physical game at a friend soon too

When seeing XC3 ending scene I didn't wanted it to end, I wanted to go back where everyone is together and so I realized I was the moebius... I wanted to live before the closing scene and was scared of the ending To make me feel I'm the villain for wanting to keep playing, that is truly a wonderful game experience

When it came to two I really liked the really big themes it had that told a grandiose large scale story e. g. Nihilism existentialism humanity war etc but with three though it has similar themes is much more smaller in scale kinda analysing the smaller human emotions and states we live in right now with moebius not being a charismatic super deep villain group you'll be remembering for ages but a pitiable analysis on everyday human fears and wants and I kind of like that

I really like how many of humanity’s fears can be seen through the various moebius members, but also the various Heroes’s colonies in 3. Every place had a new story to tell, and that made them joining in the final boss fight feel rather gratifying, because I had gotten to know them through their own human struggles.

3 definitely had a more personal story to tell. A lot of its story beats stem from internal conflicts instead of external conflicts like the first two.

This was such an awesome watch! Really enjoyed your thoughts on Moebius and the trilogy's themes. It's wild to think we may still have additional puzzle pieces to work with next year!

As soon as I went to the timestamp, I got smacked with the opening notes to Brawl's theme.

I just like the fact that one of big theme of Xenoblade Games that separates it from Xenogears and Xenosaga, the Platonic Element, is highlighted, then deconstructed in a similar way to Nietzsche in Xenosaga Episode 3. Where taking the idea presented by them more literally to show where the ideology can go wrong, this time with the idea of the Utopia from the Republic

Moving forward, if it was easy anyone could do it, This is one reason for why humanity is amazing and beautiful, and disgusting. We learn from our mistakes and push on to live the lives we want; it'll hurt and it's necessary for closure...yet here we are, tomorrow.

I don't comment that often, but this was an incredible video. I don't even watch videos over 8-10 minutes usually (I'm a college student and don't really have the time) but this was a pleasant surprise. Keep it up!

Fantastic analysis, thank you. My feelings on xc3 are improving over time. It’s still not my favourite in the series but that concept of wanting this to be the way things were in 1 & 2 are baked into the themes of the game. It’s a proper aha moment when you realise that you might very well have made the same decisions that the people of these worlds made in halting progress and creating an endless now.

Man, I love these games and your videos always do them absolute justice. And the aspect about wanting to live in the eternal now of Xenoblade 1's ending was especially ironic in my case since I was totally against destroying Bionis just because I grew so attached to its locations and layout 😄 So XC3 really reminded me of how selfish and undesirable that wish truly was.

This got more meta than I thought. Also, really enjoyed the video and thought your thoughts were very well put together - liked your take on the th(m)emes of the series : ]

I know it's a trilogy and not 5 games but i noticed that each Xenoblade game very prominently features one of the stages of grief (as well as the others, but one is always the most significant to the story) XC1 - Anger XC2 - Depression XC3 - Acceptance

Regarding the feelings towards 3 as a concept and “soiling” the ending of the first 2 games, I don’t see it that way at all, I see it as a thematic through line. I think a great example to point to is Lanz ascension quest, he shared a sentiment that when he was just working for his homecoming and taking lives of others that is was simpler and easier to deal with. I think this parallels why people wished for the endless now in the first place, the people of 1 and 2 too scared to progress towards a future where decisions and actions are more are more important. Wanting to return to a stagnated culture (xb1 being zanzas life consumption cycle, and xenoblade 2s’ driver and blade system) and prevent annihilation, the irony being that their fear of death resulted in a world fueled by their death drive, because that is what self destruction is. What I’m trying to get at here is that xenoblade 3 is less of a “betrayal” to the endings of 1 and 2 and more of a thematic through line. If the future we carve beings with it hardships and challenges, we’ll push through the harsh nature of the world and come out the better person, because that’s what it means to be human. That’s what I got out of 3, the meaning of being human.

It's unironically a meme that the very word meme has become a meme and now saying meme is just seen as a meme. Basically what I'm saying here is meme is a meme.

I think the direction of the series with XC4 is the most interesting thing to me in the grand scheme of things! Will it be the start of a new trilogy or a one-off? Are they going to be completely separate in all ways or maybe show where the Conduit went? So many cool theories to talk about.

Since XC3 is the culmination of the themes from the trilogy, and I’ve heard that so much of the trilogy echoes sentiments expressed in the previous Xeno games, I’m personally hoping Takahashi is satisfied with his expression of these sentiments and is ready to tell us something brand new and just as captivating and inspiring. (And hopefully continue Xenoblade X along the way please god)

Since your talking about memes, I feel the need for at least SOMEONE to have said this, so: “Free will is a myth! Religion is a joke! We’re all pawns, controlled by something greater...” “MEMES! The DNA of the soul!”

So you've been playing Xenoblade Chronicles 3, and need to take a step away to focus on yourself? Me too man. This game has completely taken my breath away and I am not the same person I was before playing this game. I'm stuck in my own endless now just trying to move on..

I find it interesting that Moebius and the concepts it represents are human nature, but that human nature is defeated by... human nature. One of the reasons Noah and co. fight Moebius is that Moebius' world offers them no choice, freedom, or purpose beyond constant war. It is human nature to try to find your place and purpose in the world and something everyone must figure out sooner or later. It is that human desire for freedom and purpose that causes Noah and co. to allow the worlds to separate and time to flow again. Quite ironic, yet accurate, that a struggle created by human nature is overcame by human nature.

I have to say that Xenoblade chronicles,Xenoblade 2 and Xenoblade 3 Themes are so incredible that they even surpassed kingdom hearts!

It is interesting that in the hall of heroes of the City that has statues dedicated to the first ouroboros, its pretty obvious that the group consists of Shulk, Dunban, Zeke, and... I think Haze? Admittedly, can't quite pin down the gal in the northeast corner, and the guy to the east might be Adam rather than Zeke. Also, the plaques state Dunban and Zeke weren't actually ouroboros, but instead were very important mentors to those ouroboros, they got the statues on account of their importance to the individuals, apparently. So what this all says is that many of the heroes of the previous games actually got together in an attempt to solve this game's problems, but for one reason or another they failed to do so. Not only that, but they began a society of their own, the society of the City, allowing us to get at least a small sample of what the cultures their original worlds might have developed. An ouroboros group consisting of Shulk + Haze, two girls inspired/mentored by Dunban + Zeke, and then a previous iteration of Noah + Mio would be really cool to see.

So the one you think might be Zeke is actually Rex! The plaque reads that he wielded two swords onto battle, which would be Pyra and Mythra's swords. Both of the statues for the mentors depicting Shulk and Rex also are interesting because they mirror physical characteristics of people they looked up to. For example, Shulk lost the use of his right arm just like Dunban and Rex is missing an eye just like Zeke wears the eyepatch (even if Zeke didn't actually lose his eye).

@@KayJulers I feel like I might've gotten a bit confused with your reply there, especially in regards to Shulk and Dunban. I'm pretty sure that Shulk is the character depicted as the House Oritz statue to the northwest. He has the same kind of jacket and goggles Shulk typically wears as armor, he is stated to be excellent with technology, and even fought with a weapon of his own creation which reminded me of the Scrap Driver he started out with. There isn't any mention of him losing his arm, though. Meanwhile there is the statue to the west, of house Reid. This is one that the plaque states is not the actual ouroboros member, but a teacher/inspiration to the actual House Reid founder (unnamed female). This one seems to be Dunban, on account of having the same hairstyle, cloak over his incapacitated shoulder, and being said to have wielded a red sword that cost the use of his arm. Definitely a parallel to Dunban's narrative in the Xenoblade 1 prologue. The main weird thing here is how the plaque explicitly states that the founder and her teacher were not related by blood. If these were the first ouroboros, and everyone created before then were pod people like our main protagonists, then... NOBODY would have been related by blood, making this a very strange thing to specify in-universe. Out of universe, its almost certainly meant to indicate that this female character who learned under Dunban wasn't Fiora. Though rereading things further again, I guess maybe the statues don't explicitly depict the first Ouroboros (and mentors)? Since the Noah and Mio statues mention them fighting against N and helping establish the city after he destroyed it, and that event definitely would have occurred after the first Ouroboros group and non-pod-people. This does make the explicit statement that Shulk and Haze were of Kevesi and Agnus origin make more sense, if this was literally the very first Ouroboros group, then the whole group would have been from Keves and Agnus, making this clarification odd. Maybe the issue here was the centerpiece being the first Ouroboros Stone's cage, which made me think that the monument was explicitly to the first ouroboros group. Instead, I suppose its a monument dedicated to the founders of the city, who would have been at least one or two ouroboros down the line, and thus substantially composed of naturally born individuals, making the explicit mention of Shulk and Haze's origins necessary in that regard. Though, with THAT in mind, if "Rex" and "Dunban" were naturally born people from the City, then they would not have literally been Rex or Dunban, directly generated from their universes' data, but instead more likely some descendant.

@@emblemblade9245 Maybe, but her description states that she was a fantastic healer, which is honestly the main reason why I've been saying its Haze all this time. The only major Xenoblade 2 healer I can recall is Nia, and for obvious reasons it wouldn't be her.

I definitely recommend trying out 1 and 2 if you enjoyed 3! They have some great stories and worlds to them!

what i like about xenoblade is that it makes you question yourself and your thoughts. In 1 we would obviously hate the actions of zanza but then realize that he was just acting as a "human" in 2.

I gotta admit that while I really think that the story and themes of XC3 were told extremely well and I totally get what they were going for, I don't really like WHAT they were going for. I get that the theme was that nothing can last forever and obsessing over getting what you want can lead you down a bad path, but using that theme to conclude a trilogy of stories about fighting for what you want and persevering even when things get rough is a bit... conflicting. It'd be like if Star Wars Episode 6's theme was that family is overrated. That's just such a sudden drastic 180 to the storytelling that it seems a bit forced and comes out of nowhere. And personally I gotta admit that I like concluded stories over open ones. They don't need to be a happy end but they need to be an end. XC3 didn't really have an end. They defeated Mobius, then they were split said "Maybe if XC3 becomes popular enough that it gets a sequel we might see each other again" and then we're left on more questions than answers. I really don't like that and that's why I really hope we'll get an epilogue DLC over a Founders DLC, they need to actually conclude the story. Because it's also kind of hypocritical to make a story about how everything has to come to an end and we can't cling to eternity, and then have the story not end and instead be eternally open. So while I get what they were going for and they told what they were going for really well, I don't really like what they went for in the end. But the DLC still has the chance to fix that.

I literally just finished the game and damn was that amazing. I kept hearing people complain about the ending but I thought it was absolutely amazing I’m not sure what all the complaining was about. Is it because SPOILER the worlds got split apart so it wasn’t a “happy” ending? I have a strong feeling the 4th DLC is going to end with them reuniting. That ending was so good.

In post credits scene it's implied the 2 worlds got merged again but safely thanks to Origin and without the Moebius energy manifesting

While I liked what happened in the ending, I was a little disappointed with the pacing. We go from the pinnacle of the series with the end of Ch. 5 to two required side stories, a fetch quest, and a final dungeon. In comparison to XB1, where every event after Mechonic Core ramps up the stakes to an unexpected level, and XB2, where the journey through the World Tree takes a few chapters and resolves multiple character arcs, XB3's ending feels abrupt. The endgame just didn't match my expectations that the previous games set. Regardless, I'm glad you liked the ending! I honestly wish I felt like you do 😅

@@thebeetlecrew it didn’t feel that way to me, I think the main casts character arcs were pretty complete by that point anyway. The only think I will say is that X and Y got done pretty dirty and rushed. Other than that I thought it was really good.

@@monadoslash I'd recommend Luxin's video on the ending, the two universes aren't connected, Origin simply recreated them after the the collision, which would have killed everyone. If they were connected, then we would've ended on some scene of the XC1 cast meeting with the XC2 cast. That might happen in the DLC, bur currently there is no way to connect the two universes.
