How Women Kept A 3,000-Year-Old Pottery Tradition Alive In Tunisia | Still Standing

This three-generation family of potters follows the same methods from over 3,000 years ago. The terra-cotta art is traditionally made by the women of Sejnane. We visit Jomaa, Aljia, and Rim in Tunisia to see how their craft is still standing.

Telling the story of these artists, hopefully immortalizes this facet of the cultural heritage of the sejnane. What wonderful women! Such an intelligent way to make the art.

1:21 she never said "they refuse to work with clay and get their hands dirty." a better translation would be: "since the dawn of time this has been a woman's job."

Even if it's a poor translation, the point of men not wanting to do the work stays the same. It's still really silly that men won't do the work.

@@fez284 no. thats why i complained about it in the first place. so people don't get it wrong like you did. what she was saying was this work was traditionally always done by women. it's not that men refuse to work it, it's just a tradition only women practice.

@@mohamedouhibi5389 How do you think it became a woman only tradition? The women were obviously not gatekeeping it since we can see they wanted to teach it to boys as Jomma is doing now. If the women were ok with passing it to the the men, but it didn't happen, obviously men didn't want to do it.

Involving global customers into the art is a tremendous help to ensure the long-term survival of the tradition. If traditions are only regional and new generations don't appreciate them, they have no chance to be passed on and are lost completely. But with modern interpretations or traditional interpretations and a profit this has a better future. I like the idea that simple people who dedicate their lifes to handcraft have a competitive chance in the 21st century.

How are you doing? Sorry for contacting you randomly I contacted you to discuss something very important with you sir. Which I know is beneficial and profitable to you Well, Are are familiar with crypto currencies? Crypto currencies are online currencies.its not really a money or coin ..mainly I put all my investments to bitcoin, bitcoin is one of the major rising crypto currencies in the world.A bitcoin is sold for about 43,000$ but why I love this type of investments is because it is safe,100%legal,all information are kept open(I.e you can access all information yourself) and you don’t have to buy a full bitcoin to start an investment as you can start from 100$ that’s the minimum accepted but I just gave an example… You could earn more if your invest higher capital… it’s not a must you start from the minimum….. Cryptocurrencies allow for secure payments online which are denominated in terms of virtual "tokens," which are represented by ledger entries internal to the system. Investors can make money with cryptocurrency by mining Bitcoin, or simply selling their Bitcoin at a profit.

Theres places in japan too that specialize in pottery production. But its the opposite there. Only men make pottery and teach their sons, the women only dig the clay. Its very cultural. On the other hand im paying money to go to school and study ceramics in Canada, and we have a whole different culture too. Ceramics are an amazing field, especially from the point of view of culture. I dont think ive seen any other artform that has such a huge diversity of tradition and culture vitaly woven into it. You cant have a conversation about ceramics without having tradition be a huge part of it, even if were talking modern artist museum ceramics. The only other similar field that i think has this kind of complicated relationship between objects and art, is weaving and textile production. Unfortunately a lot of people still see this less as "art" though that is slowly changing. But it seems easier for people to accept ceramics as art than textiles as art.

@@mooshinu you have a very curious point, several cultures share very similar styles. For example, pyramid structures have been found in South America since 100 BC in Amazon forest, also in Egypt, and even China. This can highlight two aspects, one would obviously be cultural exchange through trade. But other could be similar circumstances that followed events which birthed a lot of similar inspiration for art. Mural paintings are also a good point to examine similarities and differences between other cultures.

Does this pottery have some Greek influence? The patterns and color look similar. Was it possible for Greek traders to interact with Tunisia 3000 years ago?

"Berber" is how the ancient greek used to call the indigenous people of north africa. Greece had colonies in libya and relations to many amazigh tribes in the region, so it is very likely both cultures influenced eachother.

You’re kidding me, do you remember Carthage? The phoenicians? These people are the indigenous inhabitants of N. Africa before the Arabic Expansion….
