How Will The Government's Tax Cuts Affect You? Reviewing National's Promised Tax Policy

In 2023, the National Party campaigned hard on their cost of living packages. A large piece of this was their proposed tax cuts for the average New Zealand worker. In this video I review how the proposed tax cuts would affect New Zealanders at every income level, and discuss my views on the proposed tax changes. Kiwis have suffered from tax bracket creep for well over a decade, and while inflation and wage growth has surged, a higher and higher proportion of our incomes is absorbed by the government's tax take.
I created a calculator in Google Sheets that allows you to assess what the impact of these tax changes could mean for you. The file is locked, you can only change the yellow cell. Check it out at: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...

The fuss is about the interest deductibility for rental properties; which is the favored investment for the wealthy in NZ, while pretending that they're giving nice tax breaks for the workers.

@@liamansell-douglas5706 well, every other business is tax deductible and the policies are not actually linked. Go look at the yield on investment properties, they are all negative yield right now. The Brightline tax actually prevented me getting a house. Labour basically tricks people into thinking their neighbour is rich and there is this false culture war between upper and lower middle class. A real rich person owns 10 houses and 2 bars in downtown, they are not your neighbour with the slightly nicer car than you. They live up on the hill will lovely views and MPs from all the parties as dinner guests. They don't have large mortgages. A middle class person like me can't afford a house, so I was going to buy one and rent it out to cover about 2/3rd of the mortgage. That Brightline tax pushed me out of the market. This might make lower middle class people think they "won". But the actual rich guys can still purchase uneffected, as they have cash not loans. You will notice house prices did not drop due to the Brightline tax. We would need a capital gain tax for that. Neither labour or national are willing to consider that unfortunately, so we are basically screwed.

Good video explaining the brackets and changes, and how a tax free threshold is a MUCH better idea for reducing actual tax take from workers. While this particular change isn't massive for higher income earners, let's not forget that National is reinstating the interest deductibility for rental properties; which is the favored investment for the wealthy in NZ.

Loving what you're doing bro. What I'd like to see, is you getting controversial. Why is the situation like this, How successive government policies over the last few decades have landed us here, including immigration etc. Housing affordability is a huge issue for kiwi first home owners, giving in-depth mortgage numbers, possibly forecasting rate increases. Maybe looking into What's causing unaffordability, and why the govt schemes don't work, what causes inflation, what kiwis can do to combat. Also rather than excel you could include these sheets as fast fill forms on your website for those without excel or on mobile. Cheers bro !

D Parker was saying that the NZ tax system is set to work with welfare side of tax system. This means many people who earn up to say 120,000 pay income tax but get other entitlements which mean have more disposable income. Over this income people get less access to other entitlements. In short our tax system relies on the over 120,000 earners.

However it's such a sacred cow, there will be no change until the number of impoverished renters vastly exceeds the number of landlords.
