How will Gen Z react to the TikTok ban in the US? | The Stream

Within a few months, Americans might lose access to TikTok if a bipartisan bill that recently passed the House of Representatives is signed into law. The United States wants the Beijing-based parent company ByteDance, which owns TikTok, to sell the app to a US company over fears of privacy and national security. But how will this ban affect the mostly young content creators and advocates for marginalised voices who have found solace and solidarity on the platform?
Presenter: Myriam Francois

Kahlil Greene - Digital educator and speaker
Nikita Redkar - Comedian, writer and content creator
Wally Rashid - Online personality and entrepreneur

It does. The problem is their control isn't as tight as they'd like. For example, the CIA has control of hashtags but not the algorithm that usually surfaces a counter-balance video on your fyp to show you more perspectives.

To call a representative of the ADL who made a complaint about TikTok an American official is to indirectly equate that person with having governmental authority; and while the ADL certainly wields significant influence over the government in the United States by way of the Israel lobby, it’s important to make clear that distinction. Why? Because it goes to the evidence that the reason given for the TikTok ban is nothing more than a fig leaf to hide the Israeli influence over our government from the American people. That ADL rep may have been accurate about the divide being between young and old in general; but speaking as a boomer, I can tell you that there are far more of my generation that are cognizant of the influence peddling and the corruption that it creates, than the people at the ADL and those like them might imagine. Anyone who has broken free from that now obvious control, is a breath of fresh air to humanity. The awakening is snowballing… When America releases itself from the stranglehold of Zionism, the whole world can begin to heal. This is the time you need to fight for your country. Thank you to all who participated and contributed to this informative piece. IMHO I believe we might be observing the early stages of the algorithm wars. For too long people with opposing views have been shut down on platforms such as FB, Insta and Twitter (to name but a few), effectively shaping the narrative, telling some people what to think. There has long been resistance by some against Tic Tok partly because they are unable to control the content (effectively, the narrative), in the process exposing MSMs role. I’m in my mid 50s, I don’t use the platform much but I am very impressed with the views shared here. I’m glad young people are standing up, well done. Even if they eventually find a way to shut Tik Tok down, my hope is some of these young, enterprising minds will find a way to make their voices heard. We’ll all do well to remember; if you’re not paying for a product or a service, then you are the product. Wishing you all everything of the very best

Context is that millennials remember a childhood when we still had a white picket fence world. We could afford to not only exist but thrive. We lost that world. But for us, it’s somehow always just within our grasp. I think it has something to do with how the economic crises were timed in our lives. Gen Z are used to having nothing. So, they’re creating. Now I pray millennials get used to having nothing.

When dealing with: disasters, homelessness, pollution, housing, Biodiversity, living wage, green transition, tax equality... NO agreement or funding or discussionon how to deal with ALL the problems negatively affecting the country. The US is literally and figuratively falling apart and yet what is agreed upon has nothing to do with addressing the issues. The US would rather spend Billions for Isreal to bomb Gaza, Billions to support Ukraine, Billions to engage In a trade war with China, Billions to build and operate bases around the world, Billions of dollars in tax rebates for the rich, Billions of dollars for companies that benefits the rich, Billion of dollars for keeping on top of the world in many ways. What this has increased is the divisions in the US more than before as well as added more fractures.

In the U.S.. the only thing that matters to the politician is "vote." If the young people cannot translate their dissatisfaction into action by voting these politicians out of office, then they have no one to blame but themselves. Based on the vote count in the congress, it is pretty certain the politicians knew these young people will not vote in the coming elections. Here is another way to look at this issue: How many U.S. politicians will dare to vote against Medicare or Social Security benefits? The answer is ZERO (unless they wanted to commit political suicide).
