How well does macOS Catalina run on minimum requirements?

Ғылым және технология

Now that macOS Catalina is officially released, how well does it run on the lowest end Macs? To run Catalina you need a MacBook Pro mid 2012, MacBook Air 2012, Mid 2012 Mac mini, iMac from late 2012, MacBook early 2015 or a Mac Pro from 2013 or later. But many people are wondering how Catalina runs on the bare minimum requirements: does SideCar work, what about Handoff, iCloud Drive, and how fluid is the system overall? Let's find out in this macOS Catalina review

2011 Macs with SSDs are functionally for the end user faster than 2019 iMacs with HDDs, irregardless of processor or RAM.

Yeah. It doesn’t matter how fast the processor is if the whole system has that ancient bottleneck otherwise known as an HDD. That’s why I tore out the hard drive in my iMac and replaced it with an SSD. It’s lightening fast now.

Apple is being seriously greedy holding that upgrade back from the stock config. though. It then has the audacity to ask for a *100 bucks* to "upgrade" to a fricking 128gig ssd. At that price, and considering that the hdd is unused, they should at least throw in a 512 gig drive. These greedy actions are the only reason why I'm not buying any apple products in the near future. My old 2013 MBA is getting towards the end of it's life, and I was considering getting the 2019 pro model, but it has the same base storage as a machine that is *7 Years old.* Surely ssd manufacturing must've improved a lot, and they should be cheaper no?

It turned out to be a great investment. I still use it for work on a daily basis for 8 plus hours per day. Upgraded to a Samsung 500BG SSD about 3 years ago and also upgraded RAM to 16GB. Running latest version of Sierra now and it still runs like a champ. boots in 45 seconds and ready to go. Considering updating to Catalina, but don't want to push my luck with how well its running.

I have a 2012 MacBOok Pro - slightly higher spec, the 2.9 GHz Core i7 version - that I've upgraded to 16GB of memory, a 500GB SSD and a 1 TB HDD in a caddy. It's running fine with a couple hundred Chrome tabs open, several Visual Studio Code windows open, both Firefox and Safari running a few tabs each, and some other stuff. I like that it's the last version that can be completely disassembled and anything replaced. What I don't know is whether there's a significant enough boost to go to a 2013 or later model. Because of the DisplayGate problem I know there's a couple model years to avoid, as well as avoiding the models with the butterfly keyboard. Meaning I think 2014 is the last suitable model year.

Slap in 16GB of RAM and it becomes a very capable mac, let down primarily by the screen resolution. My 2012 macBook is running catalina just fine, but it's primary usage is casual browsing, music etc. - I got it second hand with the mechanical drive. @i Phone I don't know about Mojave. I jumped from High Sierra.I don't give assurance on extra battery backup. but it won't drain the battery unless some thread or program run continuously eating battery and cpu, which you can find and solve by going through internet. and first update also released so any issues with OS would have solved by now. performance will be same. and dark mode surely better for eyes. In my case I didn't face any problem while updating or post updating. I surely recommend it. prefer clean install because junk data slow your mac.

AlphaMax Catalina is only supported on that Mac Mini because Apple knows the user can easily upgrade to an SSD(and for almost no money). A modest amount of money and 15 minutes to swap out the HDD and increase RAM makes the system operate similarly to new ones. You own a the most basic Mac possible, and are clearly interested in gaming more than anything else(something Macs are just not built for). I’m not sure if you building a gaming PC is wise if you can’t handle resurrecting a Mac Mini.

i remember when i upgraded my 2011 13" MBP with an SSD and 8 gb. It was like a brand new machine, i extended the usability up until this very day. It's perfectly usable for day to day tasks even now, 9 years later. I also upgraded my moms polycarbonate macbook with an SSD and 4 gigs of ram. That this is over 10 years old, and she still uses it. It's getting a little slow, even with the SSD, at loading bigger websites, but it still gets the job done.

I’ve been running Catalina for the last couple months on my 2012 MacBook Pro. Initially it had 4GB of RAM and a 500GB HDD, and it ran well enough to do basic tasks like web browsing. Upgrading to 16GB of RAM and a 500GB SSD (roughly $150 from OWC) made a significant improvement. It boots fast, most tasks are fairly fast, and does fine with Xcode, VS Code and Android Studio which can be fairly CPU intensive at times. I keep it on my desk half the time connected to a 4K monitor, and that does not appear to effect performance. The only reason I have to upgrade is the low res screen. My previous MacBook Pro had a Retina display (and was stolen), and I like having more screen real estate.

Yet Microsoft Windows 10 can run the equivalent 32bit programs, and older programs under XP Compatibility Mode. And Windows 10 can run Macs not good enough for Catalina or Mojave. Apple - buy our newer stuff only. Mojave - release 2018 Hardware Requirements: MacBook Early 2015 or newer - 3 year old machine iMac Pro 2017 - 1 year old machine Not that Windows is better, but it illustrates that Apple is only giving lip service in pursuit of profit. It's a shame that the system requirements for macOS are so ridiculously high. I've got the current build of Windows 10 running on a 13 year old laptop (yes, from 2006) with a Core Duo processor (not even Core 2 Duo) just 3GB of RAM and a hard drive. It runs quite fast. Sure, that's an extreme example, but as I said, Windows 10 run really well on it. Not only that, but the current build of Windows 10, runs faster than previous builds and on some older computers on which Windows 10 was unusable on, due to it running slowly, it now runs fine. My main laptop is from 2011, with a second gen Core i5 and it's more than fast enough for what I use it for. If I wanted to, I could no doubt use this computer for years to come and it would still be able to run the newest builds of Windows 10 when they are released, with no issues.

when I was younger I had a 2009 macbook (white) and had it up until last year and I had to use a windows laptop until I could buy a new mac because it was so slow. Now I have a 2015 macbook pro and it works great!
