How Well Does A SOL Escape Bivvy Work?

I had to try out a SOL Escape Bivvy Just to make sure that it works!

I used this bivvy in northern maine recently. The temperature got down to 38F outside. Inside of the bivvy was 80F. What I did was make a bed out of a leaf pile, wore a wool commando long sleeve, under thermal pants, smart wool mountaneering socks and a thick wool beanie. All without shelter. Just on a leaf pile. I carry this in my day pack.

If you need to use this, where it lets you down is with conductive heat loss. It'll work most efficiently if you can lay any kind of insulation below and above you, and also keep out of the wind. It is a much better bivvy than you'd expect you are getting for the price. Good video MrBackpacker48, thanks.

I had not the greatest nights with bivys... getting cold and soacked...but not with the SOL: in fact I ended loving mine so much that I've just ordered 2 more to have permanently in different backpacks!!! WELL DONE SOL!!! CONGRATS!

Great piece of gear. I always carry one in my daypack along with a DIY Tyvek tarp just in case. I've been semi-lost with the sun going down and it's not a good feeling. Best to be prepared. Thanks old buddy.

Thx for trying out this bivy. A couple of things: I wouldn't trust the reading on the thermometer since its resting on your body - your sense of feeling comfortable warm is a better indicator. I would cinch up the hood since a lot of heat is lost around the head and neck. Sitting without any insulation under your backside will cause quite a bit of conductive heat loss. Perhaps you could spend an entire night in the bivy and report back, (not many people have reviewed the bivy this way). I could be wrong, but I thought SOL made an XL version.

Wow, I am so glad you did this. I have the SOL emergency blanket (one step cheaper than the bivvy but more insulated than the mylar blanket) just because I never trusted the mylar blankets, we pulled one out one day and it ended up tearing, not much use to anyone, so thanks again

Great review, l have been out backpacking by myself early in the spring when the temperature dipped to freezing. I was getting cold and I had all my clothing used to keep warm at night. I took out my mylar space blanket and it certainly did help, but I found tthe draft would get in under me just using it like a sheet that it is. This product would have worked much beter. Thanks for sharing this.....Take care, Bluefin.

Other "reviewers" who've spent the night in this type of bag have complained about condensation wetting out the interior. That could be a killer. "I think I could survive the night in this thing for sure". 30 minutes in the thing is no test. You've got the thermometer sitting on your knees? Very scientific.

If you sleep in it on the ground, build a leaf bed of any type by 12 ins an don't where a lot of layers on yourself, I've seen where your gtg to about 30° fahren

  • @tashadeleon8721

if you're dressed to be ok walking around at freezing temps, you can sleep ok using this and the same clothing, if you loosen your boots and leave them on your feet. By itself, it's not worth much, other than keeping rain off of you. you really need a bug net in side of it, to prevent condensation from becoming an issue, and you need to cover your neck and lower face with a shemaugh and breathe into the bag. A 10 mg, timed release Ambien tablet is by far the most useful item (of such size and weight) that you can have in a crisis.

I could sleep in my thermo underwear in a cheap three seasons bag. I was freezing in SOL in same underwear. I had to make a fire in beautiful august night at 17 degrees C in the morning to get warm. It is not effective at its own but with enough clothing it works just fine.

Yes. It acts as VBL (Vapor barrier liner) and you want to use a watertight bivvy so no water gets into the sleeping bag. works.

Interesting, The Sol somthin bivy. I was thinking of the dress of Monks, Fryers, Brothers of Church Orders, The one you wore, An other 18" more in circumference, From the bottom an 18" flap so you could have your feet out side the robe for walking, Then for warmth bring the feet into the pocket. And arm sleeves, They could be pulled in when keeping warm. Or large arm flaps. The Polish lavoo poncho would be a dezine to worke from, The Great kilt, As in Brecanfal, But that would fill a packe sack, And weigh 10 to 12 lbs. But it would be interesting to reconfigure that Sol bivy. I can hear you now, Don't let Duffy near my bivy bag with a pair of scissors.

if you're 6 ft and 200 lbs, they are WAY too small. Make it a foot longer and 6" wider at the shoulders and it's a lot more like what's needed.

Nice maybe I missed it but how long is it? I am 6'4 and I am wondering if it would work for me. If you put some form insulation on the ground (Juniper branches, fir branches or Grass) and laid down using that I bet you could stay fairly comfortable. Jason

I like it and I don't like it I like the material and everything the hood is poorly it's too tight it should have been done more professional they should have made it with arms you know not in a bag that you have to go in like that that's good to lay down with I think if you want to make something like that you should make it with arms and leg and a good hoodie that you can fit in to not be uncomfortable in the wind blowing blowing in your face and blowing the hoodie off and then if it's raining and thunderstorm where you going to run to to the floor cuz that's where you going to go to the floor and then they don't make the sipper better professionally that you could sleep over in and out so the material is good but the making of it and the creation of it is cheap
