I wonder if the Welsh name of a city would have counted in the city round - like Casnewydd. Also: The system of sorting places into "cities" and "towns" and whatnot is completely strange to everyone outside of the UK. Why would a smaller city not be considered a city? And who is supposed to learn by heart which ones are cities and which aren't?

Why? What makes the UK system so unique?

@@maxineb9598 In Germany, for example, we just call everything by the same name (Stadt - both city and town). We have an additional word for "village" (Dorf) which is pretty much the same as in English, so a place that belongs to another town, but isn't a town of its own. And then we have two more words: "Großstadt" (literally big city/town) which just applies to everything from 100k inhabitants (exactly), and "Metrolopole" for everything from 1 million. But those words are just a classification to know how big a place is, they're not important in any other way. If I understand correctly, the British system makes a difference between city and town by town charters and such - and that makes no sense to us whatsoever. Any place in Britain that doesn't belong to another town/city is just a town/city itself by German logic. Especially since the difference it has nothing to do with the size - some towns are wy bigger than some cities (Dover as a town has 33k while St. Davids has only 1800 inhabitants and is a city). So the difference is just a piece of paper saying something is a town or a city - and that's completely random and unnessecary for non-British folks (at least from the countries I've been to).

I thought cities have cathedrals therefore differ from towns

@@markcutting6504 That may just be true, but I wouldn't know about it. In German, we do have different names for places, but they aren't tied to specific places. For example: You could call Cologne a "Stadt" (town AND city) or a "Metropole" (self-explanatory). You wouldn't call it a "Dorf" (village) for obvious reasons, but we don't differentiate like the Brits do. And I don't see what it's good for anyway. I wouldn't know which places have cathedrals or anything. I would know based on traffic signs which have "Stadtrechte" (town rights) and are therefore more than villages. But since the names of villages don't pop up anywhere except as parts of those towns, nobody should have any trouble telling them apart.
