How we SAVED our goat from parasite overload | Goat Herd Care | The Head Family Farm
Фильм және анимация
Hey Farm Friends! We're happy to be back with you all and spend some time catching up on what's been happening here on the homestead. Our newest goat Cap narrowly escaped death thanks to our fast action and the emergency vet care he received at Auburn University. We're very thankful for the care he received and his continued improvement here at home.

Oh Jaclyn, It's so good to see you and to get an update on your Homestead adventure. I'm so sorry about Muffin... she was a gorgeous girl 😢. Barberpole is no joke. Worst parasite EVER! Body scoring and Famacha checks on a monthly basis are helpful but sometimes even our best attempts at herd health aren't enough. Those parasites are sneaky! I'm so glad Cap got treated quickly and that you were able to save him ❤ We found adding a few crushed up Flintstone vitamins to the feed helped them improve immensely (in alpacas anyway). Looking forward to more updates in the coming weeks and months and hoping to see y'all at Petal's in April. Hello to Zac and Eleanor... I'm still wearing the chicken earrings she helped me pick out last September... everybody loves them 🙂 Hugs from Florida ❤ Launda

Thank you Launda! I don’t think I’ve ever hated something the way I do these parasites! I check famacha weekly and I’ve got to order solution again because it came busted but I’ll be running my own McMasters fecals regularly on our herd. I’m excited to develop that skill. The last time the vet came and did fecals, famacha was the best it could be on everyone and we still had 2 goats with fecals above 2,000 EPG, so I have a distrust of the famacha scoring.

@HeadFamilyFarm true, the Famacha is iffy sometimes. The McMaster system is awesome! We did ours, originally, in a sugar float in time increments (1 hour, 4 hour, 8 hour, and 12 hour) as different eggs will rise at different rates and that was a great source of information but time consuming and labor intensive. McMaster's is the way to go! Especially for a good-sized number of critters! Wishing you great success! ❤️
When I saw her, I thought to myself wow that looks like one of Nick & Zoe’s pigs. Congrats on the new adventure of growing your own meat. Not only will you know where your meat came from but you will know that she had a good life and she was cared for.

Who needs a tiller when you have a pig😂! I'm glad Cap is doing better!! Nice seeing you!
Wish you luck containing your wild pig. Will have a lot of work repairing its mayhem. At least you didn't have a garden bed started for it to destroy.

WoW! I remember you. Good to see you able to move out from your computer and walk around so we can see you. But I definitely understand why you are doing so much computer work. I'm afraid if I asked you to stop that too many farmers would suffer when you couldn't keep them updated. I understand but so good to see you.

Hey Gayle, glad to be back to putting out videos. Everything has continued on here as usual, despite us not filming and sharing, there’s still a whole farm to care for. I’m blessed to be able to work my full time job part of the time from home, as well as our web business serving other farmers and our farm business! Thanks for joining us and for your kind words!
Welcome back!❤

So nice to see you again, Jaclyn! I have missed you, your family and farm. I am sorry you have been dealing with illness on the farm, I hope you all are well now and that Cappacino will continue to grow stronger. 💖🙏💖 I wonder if there is any way to treat the pastures, to rid them of the majority of parasitic infestation, to be healthier for the goats to graze on? I really don't know anything about this, but hope to someday see Cap producing some beautiful babies on your girls. 💖💖💖

Thank you so much Meg! From our research, there’s not a pasture treatment that won’t affect our pond negatively. Unfortunately it’s just not safe. The answer is pasture rotation, but that comes with big hurdles for us too, especially in winter when there’s no grass growth. We’ve learned these parasites can’t climb more than 3 inches up the grass, so when we cut we need to leave it longer 6-8 inches is ideal and that means as winter approaches also. If we can leave it longer over the winter it will help with recontamination while the grass isn’t growing. Ultimately the best management is rotation. By resting an area for 1 month 70% of the parasites will die off without a host, so the reinfection rate is much lower, the vet recommends moving them weekly because they hatch within 7 days!! To do that we would need double the land we have or only 2 goats 😅 I’ve learned a lot by studying the refugia and pasture practices used in Europe.

How far Can the animal reach? The size of it head Including the reach of their tongue…. Then that’s how far the fence should be away from the tree plus… if they can’t reach it they won’t eat it!! Just saying 🤷🏻♀️ Love you Channel by the way!!
