How We're Building A BMW E36 Touring Car

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In 1994, BMW won the 24 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps with the mighty E36 318is. It set the tone for what would become a dominant decade for BMW at the Spa 24 Hours, winning 5 out of the 10 races in the 1990s. A BMW E36 grabbed its first victory in 1994 and low and behold, it was a 318is who took home the trophy. The M42 BMW put in their 318is road cars from the E30 to the E36 was the basis for the (2.0l) S42 Race Engine which they used in their Touring Cars. All of this inspired us to make our own recreation and interpretation of a 1994 24 Hours Race Winner. In this episode, we'll talk about how we'll transform our very own 1994 E36 318is into a recreation of the '94 318is that stormed to victory in the Spa 24 Hours.

I race a 318i in time attack here in the US. This video makes me so happy. M42’s are underrated and I wish more people would push the power levels.

That's cool! There are a few shops specialising in the M42 in Europe so we'll have to get in touch with them eventually. Right now we are gathering parts to do the manual swap. We were actually able to find an E36 M3 ZF1053 manual gearbox which are rated for 800nm if I remember correctly. I'm 100% sure the bell housing bolts onto the engine but I'm not sure which driveshaft will have the correct length. Maybe the one off of a 4 cylinder, maybe even the auto one, maybe a 6cyl driveshaft, who knows. If you have any tips, let me know!

May be worth having a look at BDS Motorsport in the UK They specialise in m42/44 engines. Making easy 160+ with minor work. And well over 200 and 8000rpm with all of his own development. He is probably the most knowledgeable guy you’ll find on these motors. Amazing stuff he makes.

That's a good shout! Would love to get 8.000rpm or at least a reliable 7.000rpm+ out of this engine. It won't be a full blown race car as we'd love to do roadtrips with it as well but I can't imagine having more fun on mountain passes than with a rev happy M42!

@@Retroschaft Agreed on BDS, they will be able to advise what works and what's a cost waste on M42. Metric Mechanic for US/also 4 cylinder race cars. They sell race parts themselves for the motors as well. I'm sure you have lots of documentation and I'll follow along the build!

Bought an e36 in Germany, first owner warsteiner, currently stripping it and turning it into a track tool, found multiple pencil markings on the chassis while pulling the interior, friend of mine who is quite knowledgeable on e36 said he’s never seen this before. Also made a 3D scan of the dash and remade the famous center console with my 3D printer.

Wow that's amazing! We actually discovered the original '94 race winner came up for sale in Luxembourg (of all places). So maybe the New Zealand car is a winner from a different year or did he end up buying the one from Luxembourg? Wouldbe interesting to know!

Exactly our thought! If we had the space and finances we'd get going on a Civic Sedan or Nissan Primera build immediately as well 😍 But we'll focus this winter on the E36, continue the build next year and do some roadtrips in 2024.

Not that common actually. This car is from Spain and I imagine it's very common over there because of the heat. We searched for a white one for a long time and were very happy to find this one! Also feel free to watch the first video on this E36 where we pick it up and drive it home for 200km 👍

Salut, super projet.
