How We Made It | Dramatherapy in the Othello Rehearsal Room | National Theatre

Ойын-сауық

“We’re creating something that will touch the hearts and minds of audiences - so it’s going to do that to the cast as well.” Othello is playing at our South Bank home from 23 Nov to 21 Jan 2022, and in cinemas worldwide from 23 Feb 2023: www.nationaltheatre.org.uk/sh...
Director Clint Dyer and Dramatherapist Samantha Adams are working together to make sure that the cast and creative team of Othello stay well, while telling a story that includes racism and misogyny.
The cast includes Giles Terera (Death of England: Face to Face), Rosy McEwen (The Alienist) and Paul Hilton (The Inheritance).

❤ such insight of how therapy support is provided and needed on this platform

I haven't been to the theatre for a while. But the two things that upset me as an audience member even watching movies are - A child actor in a distressing scene, and I know they take steps to shield them but I'm not sure it's enough. And older actors in death scenes, that strikes me as particularly taxing to act without inevitably reflecting on mortality. Being any kind of actor appeared to me (as a non-actor) as some kind of crazy superpower. But then I realized it's more like an athlete, which comes with a significant cost or effort or burden that needs to be recharged or healed. So I can see why they would need support to tackle difficult subjects or personal triggers.

Is this the new normal to make sure you have a drama therapist? Is this ipart of theatre beyond the National or is it specific to The National?

I get the deep impression this woman and her position are without need. This reminded me of Ian McKellan describing acting on Extras.

I bought an online subscription and they are very stingy about making plays available

The play's the thing. The play is itself sufficient therapy.

@@noirblanque5324Is Othello about racism tho? At the end of the day, Iago is probably racist but Othello is the one that kills his wife.
