How we can fight Alzheimer’s: Lisa Mosconi, Ph.D. | mbg Podcast

Lisa Mosconi, Ph.D.: "When we talk about risk factors for Alzheimer's, we're out looking for... Do you have high cholesterol? What's your insulin level? Do you have pre-diabetes? Do you smoke? But the number one risk factor for women is their hormonal health."
Mosconi, a neuroscientist and associate director of the Alzheimer's Prevention Clinic at Weill Cornell Medical College, joins Jason Wachob to discuss how cognitive decline differs between men and women, plus:
Why being in a relationship can be good for your brain
The crucial connection between Alzheimer's and menopause
What she thinks about the Mediterranean diet
The healthiest way to drink coffee
Why you should get a brain health assessment in your forties

I’m concerned about the comment about not too much meat. Older women need much more protein- at least that’s what we are told. Meat is one of the best ways to get that protein, far more usable to our bodies than plant proteins. Help us clear the air, please.

no. It's just that people eat too much. It should be a small portion like a quarter of your palm. All nutrients are needed for good health but vegetables shouid be 3/4 of the plate and water should be the drink of choice. No alcoholic, flavoured drinks, no smoking.

If you want to mitigate muscle loss as you get older, no matter what sex you are you, you must work to stimulate the muscle and consume enough protein. It is much easier to get enough protein to do that from meat. Also if you want to build muscle, which should be recommended for aging people you will need to consume even more protein. She is only talking about how protein effects the brain not the over all health of the aging body.

Most doctors will not work with a patient unless they are already symptomatic! If we say that something is painful, or we are falling apart emotionally, then they will act and give care, refer us to specialists. How do we find ANY doctors who will help us early on? I am 70, and my doctors won’t help me unless I am in pain or crisis. I can’t spend an arm and a leg for a Dr who works outside the medical system, like Dr. Mosco ni or Dr Peter Attia. I need a physical trainer who will take my osteoporosis into consideration, but where is that knowledgeable person? Dr. Doug Lucas has such a person who works with him, but it costs thousands to get into her program. Help, please. The doctors you say we need are not out there in any abundance. They are needles in the haystack.

Hi Ellen I have been on an enormous learning journey over the past 12 months as I have moved with poor support through the last year of perimenopause. Like you, I have found that doctors are tightly focused on treating illness with medications whereas I am interested in optimising my health and wellness. I have found KZread to be the best source of empowerment through education so long as you choose credible sources. Have a look at Dr Barbara Taylor (aka Menopause Taylor), Eric Berg’s playlist on menopause, Dr Susan Hardwick-Smith, Dr Mary Claire Haver and Dr Louise Newson. ❤️

I’m very disappointed that this discussion didn’t get into the impact of patriarchal oppression on women. Sure, you touched on how medical studies focus on male bodies and inappropriately apply the findings to women. The fact remains that society places tremendous demands on women and continues to enable all sorts of abuses. Women are more likely to be trauma survivors and are more likely to endure more frequent traumatic injuries. Add to this the stresses of not being believed… Then we have to work more for less as well as all the unpaid labour at work and at home. All of this does damage. Yes, lifestyle improvements will help, but until we achieve real equity we will continue to be more at risk. This MUST be part of the discussion.

There is a class action suit against the a Yale fertility clinic where multiple women experienced severe pain during a medical procedure for egg retrieval which involves inserting a needle through the vaginal wall into an ovary( ouch) . Multiple complaints over several months were not investigated because they supposedly were medicated with fentanyl. THEN an alert staff member noticed that a fentanyl vial had been tampered with and they found that a nurse was siphoning off fentanyl and replacing it with saline. So some women were getting diluted fentanyl , some to getting straight saline with nothing for pain control. This is an example of multiple women who complained of severe pain and were ignored. No wonder they are suing

Why do you have to follow what society says women should be? Why not create a framework for yourself and follow that. I'm from female dominant family. My dad taught us not to be subjected to men. You can create a frame work of the kind of life you want and make it happen.

The body starts to shut down slowly. The brain does communicate to the feelings of hungry, need to use the bathroom or just activities of daily living. The person starts to decline slowly then everything shuts down.

I heard her on another podcast and loved what she was saying. I was really enjoying it then she lost me. She is speaking of gender fluidity. I'm sorry, but just because someone takes hormones to pretend to "transition" to the opposite gender, doesn't mean we should or that is has been proven to actually make it so. It's not possible!!! We really need to stop lying to these people and take their mental health issues seriously. She is very kind and I'm sure that she doesn't want to hurt the feelings of these folks, but good grief!
