If you want to go to the higher places, you have to start from the first step, like wise in the western countries, we have to start from the first step. You "appreciate" what they have gone through? Anyway, Maybe joining mangmi is respected and paid well enough TODAY but not really back then. Remember they talking about past. And "back then" not everyone can think about going abroad because of unthinkable amount of money we have to pay for that.
