i was going to comment on those very same words too. it is an important reminder that in order for one "tradition" to have been born, the thing that preceded it had to be open to change.

My mom has a whole wardrobe made like this, it's a prized possession in our household. The artistry is amazing on it; I used to hide under a gap it had in the middle and stare at the beautiful images it had embedded into it. It illustrated the nature surrounding the Han River. Sadly, we don't have room for it in our new house, so it's sitting in our garage securely covered...

It's amazing how artistry, craftsmanship, and family tradition can really tie you to a piece. My grandmother had an old buffet made of hardwood (I think oak) carved and turned in an old European style. (I think she inherited it from her father.) I remember being just tall enough to get fruit out of the glass bowl she kept up there, and I remember the holiday decorations she would put on its small corner shelves. If I could get my hands on that thing, I know exactly where it would go. I hope you can find a way to include your mother's beautiful wardrobe in your home again.

I remember when I studied abroad in Korea, I bought a small najeonchilgi piece in a museum as a gift for my parents. It had a design of two cranes on it, which fits us well because our last name is "Crane"! I think it was one of the most expensive individual purchases I had made in my life at that point, but very worth it. Now it's safe in a wood cabinet with glass windows in it, where my parents keep all the really precious/beautiful things, so we know it's protected but we can still look at it :)

I had looked for a video like this a while back and was not able to find anything. Now, this video was presented and I have a better understanding of the procedures that the Masters go thru to make this beautiful artwork. My wife of 45 years is from Korea. We also have a a few wardrobes and smaller items with this inlay on it so I have appreciated this lacquer work for quite some time. The only downside of the work is the wood is generally very fragile. Kind of like anything made of Balsa Wood. Thank you Victoria and Albert Museum for posting!!

  • @bizzybee852

The beautiful tradition of artistic endeavours like lacquering is so important to preserve. If we lose the craftsmanship and skills required in this art, not to mention the talent, we will have lost something really valuable and beautiful. That is why It is so necessary that the skills and craftsmanship be taught to the next generation. When you think about a process that takes 45 steps, and hours and hours to achieve the final result, you can really appreciate the tedious skill and patience required to produce something of such beauty. When I look at old houses where so many beautiful features were achieved by remarkably talented and skilled craftsman who put in many hours of hard labor and tedious work, it makes the homes so much more special. And unfortunately there are very few craftsman with the skill, training, and talent, required to achieve such results today. The aesthetic of homes and architecture in America has suffered from the loss of skilled craftsman and artists.

Makes me want to go buy myself one right now. They have these at thrift stores sometimes, but it's more like an antique/vintage thing, which is sad. Hopefully craftmanship like this will stay with us a little longer. Industrial revolution and machinery not only brings good change, but on the bad side it also caused many wonderful traditions done by hand to be replaced. Also modernization cause many beautiful things like this to get lost because it stops being 'trendy'. Let's just all appreciate traditional crafts whenever we can, because when we stop, they'll eventually cease to exist.

I would love to understand the mindset and motivation of people who give videos like these a 'thumbs down'. Because no matter how interesting and impressive a video is, there are always those who apparently don't like it - although they almost never leave a comment saying WHY they don't like it. Presumably they get some kick out of it, but what that kick is is hard to identify.

Oh they do, but most don't want to pay for the time and effort when they can get something cheap, faster that looks "close enough" though will be lucky if it lasts a single generation. My mother still has my great, great, great grandparents dinning table. Unfortunately the matching seats they made were ruined when we moved to a house that had central air conditioning and the wood dry rotted from all the moisture getting drawn out of the wood. (She had never had air conditioning before that so she didn't know to oil the wood to help preserve it until after they started cracking, breaking and then it was too late)
