How Volition Killed Themselves & Saints Row

Ойындар

Deep dive into how Volition Killed Themselves and the Saints Row franchise.
Starting out in 2006, with their original Saints Row game, then Saints Row 2 which fought directly against Grand Theft Auto IV, the change of direction in 2011's Saints Row 3 along with the misguided path of Saints Row 4. From there they would have another try with Saints Row Gat Out of Hell before leaving the franchise behind to create Agents of Mayhem, while GTA Online took over their formula. And ending it with their underdeveloped and underperforming Saints Row Reboot, which tanked so bad it killed the series and anyone in any way linked to it. How that happened and what it means for the future, find out now!

The biggest tragedy of the reboot is orginally the devs pitched the idea of going back to its roots and making a crime game about real gangsters. And it was the higher ups who decided that they should make a game appealing to "modern audiances" and make a game all about friendship! Because thats what everyone wanted obviously.

@@VinnyUnion, I think the real issue is that the higher-ups are so out of touch that they don't actually understand what modern audiences want. I was too young to get into Saints Row in its heyday, but the concept has always been incredibly interesting, and I've since gone back and played two and three (I can't find One anywhere). I can see an alternate setting where the Saints get their start because a group of friends stuck in the hood get sick of having no power to fight back against the established gangs, but whoever mandated the change clearly doesn't understand the kind of circumstances that cause people, even otherwise good people, to engage in organized crime in the first place, so they did a 'The Hangover' style comedy plot, and fucked the PR response after.

You missed the whole point of Julius movement. He was trying to someone save entire Stilwater out of gang shootouts and other criminal things. Playa stood in and Julius believed in him. But unfortunately all Playa did was not changing anything than everyone being united together and still has crime on the streets. Stilwater was calm for a while then new gangs stepped in to claim and lead the territories. Playa wouldn't step out and everyone too if he demanded from him to do it in SR1 which is why he did choose betrayal with others knowing and agreed but not telling to Playa because he knew he wouldn't accept the offer. Everyone was living their lives.

I actually love the 1st and 2nd games for their story. In the 1st game Julius founded the Third Street Saints. The saint in the name implies they weren't supposed to be an evil gang but rather anti-hero like. Julius hated the drugs, prostitution and overall chaos in the city. He also was not all kill civilians and stuff just gangs and crooked cops. speech he gave at the beginning of the 1st game implied this. He was willing to be a gang leader to get rid of all the gangs in the city. However the Saints and playa themselves became just as bad as the other gangs in the end so, Julius kills playa at the end of the 1st game therefore ridding all gangs from the city. The story carries over to the next game pretty much where we left off with all the characters either dead or doing their own thing, including Julius. Playa wakes up from their coma, everything completely fresh in their mind from the past game and now has to rebuild their gang back up. Taking the city back from new gangs and taking revenge on Julius even, if you beat the 2nd game and got the secret ending. Julius explains why he betrayed playa bc of the reasons I stated above, to rid all gangs, which means you got to get rid of the Third Street Saints as well. I think it's got a good story imo but is overlooked.

I do not exaggerate when I say the say, it keeps me up at night knowing how Saints Row was completely fumbled, mishandled and completely butchered since Saints Row 3 onwards to the Reboot. They had a simple job and that was to tell a gritty, underworld gang story, but instead we have college kids griping about student loans and inclusiveness. You can not make it up, this was what the Saints in Saints Row 1-4 made fun of on the street, and Volition forced us to play as them. I made several videos on this and I can STILL go on and on about this for weeks without fail but I genuinely feel a great distain towards Deep Silver and Volition. I really do. Saints Row is gone for good this time and that's the said truth about this whole reboot.

Saints Row 1&2 were a blend of seriousness and goofy moments. Also, neither of em showed gang violence as just cool and awesome. They showed the brutality of the world. For example, during one of the main missions, Playa uses a female bartender as a human shield without remorse. Saying the games prided themselves on their silly factor is only 50% of what they were. Saints Row 3&4 showed the decay of what made the first games great.

@@BeasleySays OK, but is it that bad? I might not know, but i heard the 1st game is lacking 2nd's features as well. And what about the style? It is the Saints, they are overpowered narcissists who wish to live the gangster's paradise. In Saint's Row, I played as a parasite, ruining and taking control over a semi-peaceful city one gang at a time. I got that feeling of chaos through news reports. It can't get much more "Saint" than that. And as respectfully you disagree, that last bit upsets me. But actually, my main point in the first comment wasn't about how bad SRTT is, but about why exactly it's so popular. I might be a statistical minority, but I got the wind through some funky and edgy KZreadrs. Wish to know more opinions.

I admit, you got me when you tried to say the Saints Row reboot wasn't bad, at first. I almost downvoted. I have been there with Saints Row since the first game and it was what convinced me to buy an Xbox 360 after I had been a Nintendo fan my whole life, up to that point. It was my favorite console game series of all time and I was there even for Saints Row the Third's midnight release in purple when I was younger. And despite it being the weakest game in the franchise with plenty of issues, I can still go back and play Saints Row the Third on Steam. That reboot was a disaster from start to finish, and I saw all the ball-lickers in the comments trying to defend the game and claim "you need to buy it first before you can judge it." I desperately wanted Volition to course-correct, but was called a terrorist and hater for it by DeadlySteph the community manager for Deep Silver. So I say I relish in the fact that Volition got shut down, even if some say DeepSilver is the reason the game went woke and has the worst gaming characters of all time in it. For as bad as Bethesda, Naughty Dog, EA, Activision-Blizzard, and now Insomniac Games have been, even none of them deserved their fate more than Volition. I'll always remember them for what they did, but I won't mourn their loss. They deserved this after that Saints Row reboot.

So glad your video was recommended! Rarely do I see a creator exude such style and class as you do! Love your accent as well and looking good in all the various costumes! Saints Row 2 was my introduction, and as someone who played GTA SA before it, in my mind the two games were always very distinct. Perhaps because SR2 has more goofy moments, the morbid scenes shocked me a lot more. I remember enjoying SR3 after it came out, but I honestly struggle to remember if I ever finished it or not. Never played any games after that, the moment I learned there were aliens and such in IV my interest was immediately snuffed out. When it came out, I had no idea the Reboot was even a thing, and I could only shake my head seeing what it was. Recently I played SR2 again, and I had so much fun, just like in the past. Thank you for this quality video! It was interesting to put the development of GTA and SR into perspective. I was not aware of the timeline of the releases.

Don't get me wrong, SBI doesn't have a lot of power, but are given a lot of oversight and control from the companies of which the companies are 100% responsible, but they are jumping into this crap because of Larry Fink with Blackrock which has a mountain of investments of which is pushing ESG into the companies. You should look more into it. TLDR: SBI doesn't have a lot of control, but Blackrock (a massive investment firm) is pushing companies to use SBI and related consultants to get that ESG cash money.

@@SkyWarrior100 Social media wasn't nearly as big as it is now , people didn't spend nearly as much time on their phones, houses were less than half as expensive, you could get a Big Mac meal for under $6, wages were around 20% lower but the cost of living was around 70% lower and a dollar went further. IN 2004 I bought my first home for about $45,000 and now that home is valued at around $95,000. Overall, things were just much simpler than they are now and you could easily get by only working 40 hours a week and still have plenty of money left over. Things weren't significantly easier but they were half as difficult I'd say. Every decade inflation has went up which has lowered the average persons quality of life. I have two children who are 17 and 15 years-old and I honestly feel sorry for them and had I known that we'd be in such a bad situation these days I'd have likely not had them or I would have just not sold my two homes and rented them instead until my children turned 18 and I could have given them the homes. In only a few years they will be moving out on their own and things are going to be tough for them. Sorry if I sound hopeless, it just sucks knowing what once was and what is the case now. I highly suggest building your credit and somehow purchasing a small home because the last thing you want to do is end up in an apartment (basically a jail cell) or renting to pay off somebody else's house for them. Rent is generally twice as expensive as a mortgage payment on a loan. Not sure if that is 100% the case these days though as interest rates are probably triple what they were 20 years ago, especially if you don't have any credit. Also, if you lack credit you will need a co-signer and you have to be very careful who you use and know they will not betray you or move in with you if there life goes downhill. My parents co-signed for my second house I purchased in 2013 after paying off and selling my first, I figured I could trust them because they were fair to me on my first mortgage. Well... my parents were aging and their health went downhill so they moved in with my wife, I, and our kids a few years into the mortgage and despite telling me they were just staying until they could get another place they never left. They ended up taking over the payments despite me putting in over $25,000 towards the principal and after a lot of arguments my wife moved out which caused me and our kids to move out as well. This effectively made us homeless and caused us to end up in a rental until my wife built up her credit so she could get a mortgage for us (I couldn't because my name was on the house my parents "stole" and I refused to take it off). So yep, just be very careful with your money because your generation is living on hard mode you could say and once you get stuck paying a fortune in rent every month it's extremely hard to get out of the hole and you'll be stuck living paycheck to paycheck and a single emergency can ruin you.

It's great to see a well-put presentation about the evolution of games, franchises and studios, see how they rise and fall, what was done right, what was done wrong and what could have been done differently. If you have any interest in fighting games, you could try making a video about the evolution of Street Fighter 5: How it went from an absolutely awful release to an actually beloved fighting game... And how that redemption made possible the massive success that is Street Fighter 6. Another possibility is the Fall Out series, which is pretty topical right now due to the release of the live action TV series... Oh, boy... There's a lot to talk about that one! Especially when it comes to the disaster that was Fall Out 76, where seemingly everything even remotely related to the game seemed to fail.

I think one good thing came out of the SR reboot, that being that it made me (and im sure some others) interested in the series. I had never played a SR game in my life, but a couple months after the reboot came out, I saw all the videos being made on it, and it made me curious about the series. I bought SR2 and 3 (I couldn't play 1 because I only had a PC, but i made sure to go back and play it on xbox a couple months ago), and holy sh*t I loved it. I was a massive GTA fan and never even considered SR, I knew very little about it, but SR2 was all my favorite aspects of an open-world crime game in one. The gang-warfare aspect was insanely intriguing. The gameplay was fun and entertaining, and most importantly of all, the characters and story were pure gold! After 100%, completing SR2, I moved on to 3, I played the remastered version on PC and thought the graphics were pretty nice for a remaster, but noticed that it didnt seem to do much else. But i found it to be pretty good. I enjoyed the return of some of my favorite characters (except them killing Johnny literally 10 minutes into the game. That was VERY disappointing.) I enjoyed the gameplay and loved the melee finishers, I also enjoyed all of the side content. The story started out interesting enough, the section where you take the Morningstar mansion and turn it into a Saints HQ while listening to Power was immaculate. I thought the enemy gangs were neat, and the Morningstar seemed formidable... that all changed when I took out the Morningstars HQ ALMOST F*CKING IMMEDIATELY! I was beyond confused, and that feeling only increased as the game continued, but I was having fun. I took out each gang piece by piece and wiped them all off the map. I got to the end and decided to save Shaundi (even tho I like her character way more in SR2), and that mission was pretty nice. But I had reached this point insanely fast. The game had wack pacing. I thought Gangstas in Space was stupid, and it made me question if everything in SR was just a stupid movie! I mean, seriously, what were they thinking with that? After beating SR3 i decided to get SR4 through less than legal methods I cant mention on YT (Argh matey!) I actually enjoyed SR4 a bit, after everything my Playa/boss had been through, and the ending of SR3, I thought it was funny and cool to see him as the President, and I was willing to tolerate the goofiness. I accepted that this wasn't really SR anymore, but i had fun. I also beat Gat out of Hell, but i dont think i need to explain that game, its pm just more of SR4. And AOM, which i played for a few hrs and gave up on. I never considered even playing the reboot. it's not worth thinking about to me. Lastly, as i mentioned earlier, I played SR1 a while ago, and it reminded me of how different it and SR2 are from the future games. If i had to rank them, i would say SR1 and 2 are amazing games, 3 is alright, 4 and gat out of hell are fun but not good at all. Oh, and the reboot, i didn't have to play that game to know it's one of the worst games to ever exist... also, (if you've read this long comment), great video! Liked and subbed!

I gladly enjoyed your video, very well edited and documented. This is shame that Volition has taken down after celebrating 30th Anniversary. I'll put Deep Silver to blame for killing Saints Row and Volition by forcing them to change a story entirely for "modern audience" and being a response of "Haters gonna hate" fiasco. Honestly, I played all Saints Row games and best one in my opinion is SR2 of course for story, tone, customization and etc. Saints Row The Third and 4 is beginning of downfall but still enjoyable experience because of gameplay, Saints Row Reboot has nothing at all than cringe. If publisher actually cared about fans than just making money (IMPOSSIBLE CHALLENGE), we could get a Saints Row 2 PC Patch.

I think you are trashing volition a little too hard. They actually did something incredible with the new Saint Row, let me explain: Saints Row has had a divided fandom since SR3. There were the fans that like SR1 and SR2 more because it was wacky but still grounded focused on the gang stuff. And there were fans that like SR3 and SR4 more because the devs obviously said "Ah fuck it, lets just have fun" and the games were completely over the top and satirical. (Im more of the second one, I loved SR3, made me laugh like nothing). When the new SR game was announced I thought to myself "I wonder what are they going to do, will they return to the roots of 1 and 2, or will they go completely crazy like 3 and 4". There was no way things could go wrong, you were going to sold games no matter what you did. But volition did the ABSOLUTELY GENIUS idea of not appeal to any of them and insult and criticize fans who expressed their discontent with how the game looked!. It really takes a special kind of idiot to do something as incredible as that. "Dont like the game? Dont buy it" They said, and, well, no one did. Good riddance and goodbye.
