Their base idea is good, but the implementation seems terrible to me as they rely on single-use factories, with their own reentry module. They should completely rely on Starship for transport and the return of products. That would vastly simplify the design and reduce the price, with much larger factories, serviced by starships to bring materials and return products. I understand the reason why they did that, not wanting to rely on something that is not yet on the market, but by the time they have a working prototype, they will have spent billions on obsolete technologies, and will still have to redo the whole thing.

Industrial-scale re-entry....I think that is being tackled by Space X via its Starship architecture. Starship can go to LEO and take any "output" of orbital factory and land back. Ultimately, Varda is currently waiting for Space X to solve to Starship.

Fiber optic manufacturing is a massive opportunity where the money is and my development in quantum mechanics and materials sciences. My focus is processors and fibers integrating a protein.

What a great show. Crazy how many people come out of the Peter Thiel world to start new companies like this. Space manufacturing should have started in the 90's but it's finally happening.

John you've picked another interesting and lowkey topic. A lot of people are sleeping on Varda because building the rocket seems to be the coolest thing and even within the design of the entire launch vehicle, propulsion is subjectively the coolest and the most visually appealing. The new engineers who want to join the space industry and create that multi-planetary species should invest their talent and attention to more than just rockets. Understanding scale and production is more challenging than the design work itself. Elon in Everyday Astronaut's Starbase Tour Part 2 admits it himself and I am inclined to believe him. Production is where you create an affordable and reliable design whereas simply focusing on design often creates one time or limited/short-term success. Anyways, I know you're really busy but I sent you a DM on twitter if you'd like to nerd out more. If not, no worries.

If my approach to such things is anything to go by when people elect to consume an unfamiliar presentation their expectations are conservative if not wary. When I watched this however, you set a standard I profoundly hope can be maintained. 'Made in Space only makes products for use in space', well other than their ZBLAN printer (with several batches already printed on the ISS without risks for the astronauts), their tissue printer, their ceramics printer, their metal printer,... all for making products in microgravity for use on earth.

They announced that they purchased 3 photon systems from Rocket Lab today. With Rocket Lab behind them, this company could be pretty successful.

Yup, with Rocket Lab covering the satellite portion of the platform, and SpaceX covering launch, Varda can focus exclusively on the manufacturing and reentry portions.

Astrophysicists have figured out years ago it will be cheaper to manufacture technology and mine precious metals (from asteroids) in outer space when they solve the problems of reentry and other issues. Jeff Bezos, Peter Thiel, Elon Musk and other big thinkers understand we need to think beyond the limited technology we have today and what’s possible for future.

ZBLAN will still have its uses but the advent of Mega-constellations like Starlink will seriously reduce its market capacity. People say it'll be used to overhaul the entire global undersea cable network but the entire global cable network will be made obsolete by starlink and the other proposed constellations because light travels faster through a vacuum than any cable and 80% of starlink's signal is through a vacuum vs ZBLAN which is 100% through a cable medium, even if it has seriously low attenuation a vacuum has basically 0 attenuation.

Satellites are one part of the bandwidth solution, but there isn't a cost, or bandwidth reasonable path to replace ground based fiber with satellite constellations

Satellites don't have nearly the bandwidth that cable does. You might get lower latency, but fiber has much, much bigger pipes. That's why 90% of all Internet traffic currently goes through cable. No satellite network could carry that much data.

I think ZBLAN would have its place in densely populated areas where the satellites don't have enough capacity, or in the few places starlink won't reach

So I understand the need to move industry off this planet. Humans are not that intelligent when it comes to survival and yet I see a small number of aware and motivated people that see the need to start the process of change. AWESOME. I was born in 1960 and I have always felt out of place with all the antiquated thinking of the current politicians. We are capable of so much more. Happy to be involved in the conversation.

A common mistake with predicting the future especially what will happen in space We still have not launched a manned mission to Mars, then a civilian space company took up the challenge. That is what we took for granted bit us big time. Just like Covid the environment is an unpredictable dynamic that we have taken for granted. What else are we not taking into consideration?

Space manufacturing is on the cusp of a boom IMO. I believe the starship should fulfil Varda's requirements re volume of cargo returned to earth at rapid pace. I'm sure some form of packaging will be designed to protect delicate manufactured items during re entry. I see an even greater potential for a growing off world economy where rocket fuel and oxygen is sourced in a low or micro grav environment making transport cost in space negligible.

Great video, but have you heard of redwire? They are currently the leaders of in space manufacturing, they own made in space as you mentioned, they also own techshot who aim on 3d printing Human organ's in space, seems like this sector is definitely heating up

All he has to do is transport said materials to orbit, SpaceX has this figured and handled along at this time with China.

Solar sails used in higher orbit would let them slow down to such speed they could just fall to Earth at 300 ft per second aka terminal velocity and use a parafoil chute to fly to the landing zone.

Eventually all the materials including the factories and rentry vehicles should be manufactured off world on gravitationally less costly to LEO locations. All that should come back is the rentry capsule with the manufactured goods.

Another holy grail for space, past fully reusable orbital rockets, would be to produce glass, steel, and aluminum on the Moon! It's possible under known physics. The bootstrapping for the energy resources required will be huge, however. Potential solution for the re-entry problem: Put return cargo aboard a returning Starship tanker. If there are many cargo flights to the moon, there would be many Starship takers returning.

Or just rent an entire starship for the mission. The starship carries the factory inside it and orbits while the factory operates. Then the whole thing comes back, and the factory module is removed and refurbished for the next mission.

Space manufacturing is important, and both the moon and asteroids are a way to do it. It's crucial not only to have industries and manufacturing in space, but, additionally, it's also crucial that the productions possible to be done in space doesn't have to break and disturb the ozone layer, which, while poisonous to us, also protects the earth from even more toxic damage from sun rays and related energies from the cosmos coming our way. Furthermore, it's possible to save a lot of the energy required to escape our gravity, which keeps us on earth, by doing that work in space and designing that production to be used and repaired from there instead of having to come back and forth on earth. Suppose we mine asteroid or moon ore, and, instead of having to spend billion to send it to Earth for processing, or trillion, we can use it directly in space, also cutting our launch costs, which is an important part of the costs of space program, if not the most. As it was the most important costs to start, once those costs were paid, it is up to us to make good use of those costs and knowledge and learn to adapt the benefit of being in space to do the work from there, and to do more work from there. I think space R&D will probably be a close second to manufacturing. Also think the concept and functionality of "industrial park" will be even more effective and lucrative in space than those on land.

Yeah, it looks like they’ve branched out from the original article I read. I don’t think they are launching their own stuff yet. Mostly ISS work at the moment.

Besos is getting a lot of shit nowadays... but as his achievement of going up in his rocket gave him an eyeopening insight when he looked down on Earth, and realised that idea about manufacturing in space to keep Earth cleaner, might get him back in a good mood ; i hope ;-) !

So, Varda is trying to yet again reinvent the wheel, minds stuck on yesterday's tech. (Just like Besos, he wants to industrialize space, so he is trying to do everything Musk has already done.) What a profound waste of resources. Launch your factory to attach to a space station. Invest your research and resources into that station and factories that work there, NOT one-shot disposable factories and your own re-entry vehicles. Have SpaceX launch the station, the (reusable) factories and the materials with Starship. Have Starship return with the processed materials. THAT is your re-entry vehicle. How this is not F#@king obvious is mindboggling to me.

@@gedw99 They literally can't makee CPU's memory and other Soc's in space. The require resources that just are not going to be economical for production. What they are talking about is 1 particular aspect that might be done but it isn't building a full silicon.

I really enjoyed Liftoff by Eric Berger (he is Ars Technica's space editor). It talks about the early days of SpaceX and how they almost failed to get Falcon 1 to orbit. Definitely would recommend that book 🚀

No, they're not launching on Rocket Lab launch vehicles. What they *are* doing is using Rocket Lab's Photon satellite bus. At 9:32 in the video it's mentioned that Varda's space factories will need satellites to support them: that's the part Rocket Lab is covering.

Great presentation. The only error - there is a lot of dust in space ... where did you get there is none? The point is you can reduce dust in a space environment to a negligible level.
